What is happening at Bearden?

The head coach and #2 man on staff (apparently) do not get involved with team workouts?!?!? There-in lies a problem. Every coach who is not coaching another sport should be in the weightroom with the kids just like the kids who are not in other sports.

No every coach who is not coaching another sport should not be in the weightroom with the players. The strength coach needs to be in the weightroom and the only other coaches that should be in the weightroom are "certified strength coaches". That is the problem with most schools, you have people in the weightroom that don't have a clue as to what they are doing and they are not certified with the National Strength Coaches Association or any other strength coaches association. Let someone get injuried and see what happens.

as a former player of ron gray he deserves this job he has been offered head coaching jobs but didnt take them so he could continue to work at Oak Ridge. so good luck coach.

Hmm, lets see, he applies for other HC jobs, has been offered some, but turned them down to keep teaching in Oak Ridge. Could be the case, but it doesn't sound right to me. I guess he's waiting for the right job.

I'd like to see him get a shot though. I think he did a good job as the Oak Ridge offensive coordinator.

cbq, Tell me exactly how many schools actually have a CERTIFIED STRENGTH COACH?

It would be wonderful if high schools had "certified strength coaches" on their staff, but that is not a paid position through knox co. schools and booster clubs are not technically supposed to pay coaches, so the alternative is to have a few coaches who can run a weight program and the rest of the staff (who are not coaching other sports) monitoring progress in the weight room. If you stick one coach in a weightroom with 50 kids, then the kids will have the opportunity to take it easy because he can't watch them all. What can you say if someone gets injured and the almighty "certified" coach was helping someone else?

It isnt the coach's responsibility to make sure the players dont slack off. His job is to teach the proper techniques and supervise. The leaders of the team should be the ones making sure nobody is slacking off. If they are messing around they shouldnt be there in the first place. I know that no good leadersould tolerate slackers in the weight room.

If the coaches aren't in the weight room, the players won't be in the weight room. It is the head coaches responsibility to supervise and motivate the kids. If he's not in there it ain't gonna happen. You can delegate the responsibility if the assistant has the same stature and gets respect , but what message is sent to the kids if the head man is not there?

Any word on who some of the applicants are?

The administration refuses to discuss this with any of the players, including us (now) former players. They are dodging the support the whole team has shown Coach Gray, including a meeting of more than 100 current and former players in his support. They insisted on steering away form the topic, instead claiming "there is currently no teaching spot available" and "we'd rather haev a good teacher than a good coach". This is ridiculous people. That is why we have been meciocre in the past. The administration refuses to do what is right ot get our program where it needs to be. That would have included firing Maynard last year. There is no one to put the blame on but themselves if they son't do things right this time.

If you're reading this and you are from Bearden or have any interest in supporting our program or Coach Ron Gray, call the administration and let them hear your voice!! Its time to quit settling for mediocrity at Bearden.
