HTV,

You're exactly right! Guys like Dawg think that this is charity and anyone offered a coaching position should be honored to jump at the chance no questions asked. It took the administration 3 months to make an offer and he should respond in minutes? Not rational or wise. Whatever his decision is I hope it is the best outcome for all involved...including the school, the kids, the coaches and their families...which all the shallow minded onlookers always forget exist.

Ole Dad

I want what is best for the kids, believe me. I dont think this is charity at all, and financial situations should be considered. If I was Grey, it is obvious he is not the first choice or second. I would hold somewhat of a grudge, but after trying so hard to get this I think all of the family matteres would be discussed 3 months ago when he applied.

Whatever business you are in and you have been openly wanting a position, if your company offers it to you and you dont take it, that cant look good to the decision makers. If you were the administration, how would u take it. Most companies would say take it now or leave it. The administration, at this point is backed into a corner. I think Grey knows this b/c if he doesn't take it they are at square one with school being ready to let out.

Whatever happens, I want Bearden football to win. This entire process has gone bad for both sides.

As I understand it, Gray has been offered more than one position. I don't see a problem with his asking for a couple of days to make sure he is doing what he feels like he should. I dissagree with you on your "most companies" statement. I've been in the corporate world for over 25 years. None of the companies i've worked for didn't give an employee/prospective employee adequate time to make a decision on those types of issues.

I don't pretend to know the situation at Bearden and the coach that they have offered, but I've seen something that has happened alot that I don't understand. Coaches get offered job and turn it down based on money. Why? The pay scale is public knowledge before they ever apply. Why would anyone take time and effort to apply for job, but not research what pay scale is beforehand? If the reason he is waiting to let them know has anything to do with money, then that's silly. If it has to do with things such as whether or not he can work with staff and administration, then that's silly as well considering he has been an assistant at that school. If it has to do with other things, then he may have a very legitimate reason for waiting. Again, I don't pretend to know his situation- but I am getting tired of coaches turning down jobs that they apply for because of money when the pay scale is public knowledge.

My understanding is that the coach that was offered the postion has 3 other offers that came about the identical time of the Bearden offer and is contemplating the best selection for he and his family. I don't think it is about money at this time. I don't know that to be factual from the horses mouth..... but I would bet on the source knowing it to be pretty sound information. I understand that a decision is imminent so stand by.

As I said. I don't think it is a money issue. My understanding is that it's an opportunity issue with a guy who has lots of them at the present time, and deservedly so. Heck, Bearden took forever to make the offer, now it's an emergency for the selected coach to say yes.

I wish Gray the best, but he did apply for the job. He should have looked into the pay scale and situation before applying for it. I like Gray a lot, and wish him the best, so this is just my opinion.

Gray is a good guy and will make someone a good coach. Please don't make it sound like this is a must take job. Bearden is probably one of the top 5 most difficult situations to win in high school football in this part of the state. If this is what he wants and it is a good fit for his family I wish him the best. :D

Great athletes in the school; other than DB, an easy region; unlimited financial resources; 2000 students in the school...... yea, I can see what makes this a "difficult situation to win in high school football". Get real, there are plenty of places that it is much harder to win at than Bearden. A challenge maybe, but in the top 5 hardest places to coach, I don't think so.

It's not as easy as just being a big school in a fairly affluent area.

I am a 1976 grad of Bearden High, and since then the football program has been the "red headed step child" of the BHS athletic program. Right now the football program is 4th in the line of support behind soccer, basketball, and baseball in boys sports. Those other three are much more established programs with recent track records of success and they garner the lions share of fan and financial support and they get the better athletes participating in their sports. At least two of those three coaches strongly discourage their athletes participating in other sports. It's simply hard to get the better athletes in numbers out for football.

It is a double edged sword for Coach Gray, or for whoever ends up being the head coach at Bearden. It's a program with a lot of potential for success, but it has to be successful before it can get the attention, athletes, and support that it needs to sustain that success.

You mention it being an "easy" region, with D-B being the only good program in the region. Over the last couple of years, D-B has been the dominate program, but that has been a time when Sevier County, Science Hill, and Jeff County have been in a down mode. D-B is always going to be strong, and all 3 of those others that I mentioned aren't going to stay down for ever. Historically, it's a very good 5A region.

    • And can you tell me who those two quarterbacks were, and every kid that was put into college from Bearden is a Bearden kid? It’s kind of why they graduated from Bearden.   and I would definitely not consider ETSU “waste”…
    • Most of this is complete gibberish. But the one part I could decipher is putting kids in college. This coaching staff hasn’t put a single Bearden kid in college. They completed wasted one of the best WRs in East TN and have ruined two talented QBs. All because they’re in over their heads.
    • Well, I’d hope the new coaching staff thinks they are all that because they can always walk around the school, anytime they want, thinking that, especially for what they’ve done for the student athletes and the players, putting more kids in college in his first season than the old coaching staff did in numerous years combined, but we will just sweep over that because I know you don’t like facts. But trust me, nobody wanted Mr. Big britches, made the star player switch to quarterback, which is ultimately the reason he ended up transferring to play the position. He loved, but unfortunately, had to be at another school because Mr. Big Britches doesn’t like when a teenager knows more than him, but can’t expect much coming from a guy who used all class throwing pencils up into the ceiling and making fun of football kids who were failing class right to their face, and in front of numerous students, even projecting on the board most of the time.
    • After that first paragraph, I can see why you’re a TA and not a teacher. Have you made the move from South Knoxville to Bearden yet?    Maybe he left because he is an actual teacher and coach, and didn’t want to be associated with a group of foul mouthed middle school coaches who like to pretend they’re big time.
    • Yeah and the coach is gone. Whole bizarre situation here. We played them a couple of times at MTSU last few years. She was a player for sure.
