this question comes up often on this board...and ususally gets moved to the public private debate...we are a private school...we do not recruit...but we are willing to play whoever TSSAA schedules...the question I have is related to public schools with open enrollment...I acknowledge privates can have a kid chose to play for them who lives anywhere...but what about open enrollment public schools?...magnet schools for instance...should they play with publics or privates?...it's a hard question...I don't have answers just opionions...what are your thoughts...

IMO if you have to pay tuition to go to that school it should be classified private and all sports should be made to play D-2. Magnet & open enrollment schools should have a area around the school that the kids in that area are made to go there plus anyone else who wishes to attend that school which would move them to the higher classes where there is equal competition. If the Magnet or open zone schools require tuition or any other standard it should be classified private as well because just anyone cant attend. Its a complicated situation but something needs to be done because small rural schools rarely have a chance with all the privates that dominate A,AA. Poor East Robertson!

Private should play Private. Great example, Temple and Friendship Christian. One team should not be able to beat another team in the final eight in Class A ball like Friendship Christian beat Temple on Friday night. It is an unfair position that private v. public puts small single A schools. When you have only a limited number of students in school, the probability that you will have several great athletes is very small, but when you get the cream of the crop as the private schools do, it makes for an unfair advantage.

"....just because they go to private..... doesn't mean they are the cream of the crop,,,, they work just as hard as everyone else..... (insert blah, blah, blah's where needed)

Definitely all students at private schools are not cream of the crop; there are several great athletes at small private schools.

However, it is when the privates go out and form travelling athletic teams at the young elementary ages and allow students from public schools to play on their private team that recruiting is going on. Therefore allowing for an unfair advantage against small rural teams. Privates have no right to be doing this action, yet continue to get away with this practice.

Therefore, Privates should play privates and publics compete with publics.

Both of the schools you mentioned are private.

Like I said its complicated there are so many loopholes its not even funny. Good Example! Most schools charge out of zone fees but are predominately zoned kids which makes there enrollment go up and play in the higher classes like Maryville is 4a I think.

    • Defending 2A state Champs Westview Lady Chargers are pretty tough. They lost a bunch of production off last year's squad but returned some talent as well. They still McCall Simms, a Tennesseee Lady Vol softball commit as well as solid talent around the diamond. I dont think they are as good as last season but they will definitely be a tough out. Huntingdon Lady Mustangs seem to be pretty stout as well. Don't know much about Riverside other than Westview defeated them earlier in regions. West Tennessee softball is pretty solid all around id say.
    • Eagleville couldn’t catch up to Jones, he did have his location issues but in that game Eagleville popped up everything and the one hit they did have could have been ruled an error. Jeffcoat was a lot sharper in the beginning of the season last year than the end. ER ran out of pitching and still was in striking distance but none the less the better team one. Last seasons tournament was A LOT more balanced and talented. South Pitts starter is a Lefty who was low 80’s but couldn’t maintain his velo throughout the  outing, their #2 was more impressive last year, we knocked him around this year and his mph was down some. Their #3 isn’t bad neither, throws a lot of strikes and sits high 70’s.
