The question is, can any of them throw the ball pretty good right now? How much better could they get since they haven't ever played QB in high school?

Looks like Riverdale will be the same as last year with no passing game.

Why would we pass...when you can run? We barely had to. We supposed to have a new offensive package this year, and new plays out of the wing t

paul boykin was QB on c/o 2008's freshman team that won the lions bowl, he did pretty well there and trey smith was his backup. aaron ebalarosa was QB on c/o 2009's freshman team who was of course a little less successful but he still appears to be a great talent as well as the other 2

ok but that is exactly that, FRESHMAN. They were still playing the same kids they played in middle school. None have played QB at the varsity level yet.

Just so everybody knows because I don't want this brought up later... I'm not being negative about Riverdale's QB situation because I'm a Smyrna fan. I just find it an interesting competition which I am skeptical of and am voicing my opinion.

NP, It's really a fair question. It's also a question that every team in the state will have to answer this year....and every year. There just aren't any teams that have a proven varsity player returning at every position.

I saw both T. Smith and Boykin take snaps with the varsity in scrimmages and in games. Either will be adequate throwing the ball on the short to intermediate routes (which we need to do more of). Boykin can obviously run the ball well. I'm not sure what kind of runner Smith is. Smith was #2 all fall but lost some time early in the fall due to injury.

I expect a spirited competition in the spring between Boykin, Smith, and Ebal. Obviously, all need to play somewhere but will also be part of the depth chart at QB. There may be a couple others that get in the mix. Someone will step up and run the offense the way Coach A wants it run.

The QB race will be interesting but I'm much more concerned about finding the right players on the DL and at LB. I'm also hoping that the coaching staff works hard on improving special teams. If the OL lives up to it's promise we'll be OK on offense.

Hopefully we'll start getting spring practice dates and scrimmage opponents soon.

    • For perspective the county school I’m associated and graduated from only has 7,600 people in the entire county with a median age of roughly 47. That’s not very many 14-18 year olds to choose from. I think the football team had 25-28 kids or around there.  On the other hand Shelby County has 916,000+ with a median age of 36. This isn’t just about Shelby county, but all the big ones with huge economic advantages!  An urban/rural split would benefit tons of smaller schools that have to compete with county’s with 120x the amount of people. Especially the ones who can pick and choose their players from a pool like that!   I also agree with Pujo about charter and magnets and they will eventually be phased into the private divisions because it is obviously an advantage plus all the funding! Add that county schools can’t go recruit outside of their county like charters and magnets!
    • They should be starting next week and go from there.  They never do Spring Practice in April
    • It will be interesting to see if the Warren County School District allows this to go before a jury or they settle out of court before going to trial.  My guess is that this case never goes to trial.  If this goes before a jury, they could award even more than the $750K.  I was on a jury where they were asking for 185K and were awarded 1.2 million.  You never know what will happen in that jury room.
