This is starting to look a little like an Alabama situation with the delays and turn downs in hiring a head coach. To the Alabama faithful out there, look at it this way; it only gets better because it can’t get worse.

We're not very much like Alabama. We have an attractive coaching position and we still win championships.

I'm glad the BA administration has aimed high with its selection process.

Wesvols,

Sorry, but, yes it does sound somewhat like the Alabama situation. Everyone knows that a black cloud has been hanging over BA for the past 10 years. We all know what a great Christian, atheletic, etc. school BA is, but we also know all the turmoil that has gone on. I think with Brothers turning down his alma mater, it will really make others think twice. Hope they find someone soon or Flatt just might unretire.

I'm not sure Brothers was ever offered the position. He "removed his name from consideration" but I don't believe the job was offered. I do think they discussed it with Quarles and he elected to stay in Maryville.

As has been mentioned a couple of times, the search is on hold because Curt Masters is in the hospital. Not sure how this sounds like Alabama . . . I don't think BA is going to have any issues getting a coach.

You're right. The paper did say that Brothers removed his name from consideration. I understand that the search is on hold because of Masters being hospitalized, and I am sure they will wait until after the holidays to make a firm offer. I just hope that they are able to find the "right" fit for BA. Good luck in your search.

Any perceived "black cloud" over the BA program is easily dissipated by the tradition, support, and calibur of athletes the new coach will have available to him. It's not hard to deduce that the reason these coaches have allegedly turned down BA's offers stems from their own situations, not BA's inadequacy.

Quarles -- Has family in East Tennessee, is strongly connected to the Maryville community, and will face a new challenge with the impending move up to 5A. He can stay close to his extended family and be a Maryville legend...not a bad proposition, I'm sure.

Brothers -- Though he has ties to BA, he's built the JPII program from its very foundation and hasn't yet won a state title. He has top-notch facilities and some good athletes.

If Rutledge ends up not coming to BA, it won't be because of any "black cloud" -- it'll likely be because he's getting paid a truckload to lead the most tradition-rich program in the state.

Dozens of coaches around the state, and in other states, would love to take the BA job. We're just shooting for the best, coaches whose loyalty to their schools has been a major factor in their success, but also makes them difficult to hire.

I am told that BA wanted Coach Quarles badly. They were all but positive that he would not leave, but they offered anyway of course.

Coach Brothers is LOVED by all at BA. They were not going to offer him the job, however. As a courtesy they told him so he could gain from the situation. BA admin wants nothing but the best for him.

He may unretire even after they do find someone. It's not like it hasn't happened before.

I think you were asking for an explanation of the "Two state runners-up finishes will get you fired at BA." post. I assume the poster was implying that Tom Moore left because BA was state runner-up the 2 years he was head coach.

Your wording is incorrect. It was not "Tom Moore left". It should have been "Tom Moore got fired". <_< Two straight state runner-up finishes and he GOT FIRED. So what did his replacement do? Two straight runner-up finishes. Gloss it all you want, but Tom Moore got screwed and anyone with any sense knows it.

You are correct............Mr Flatt does like seeing his name in lights. New coach will have to have assurances that he does not return ( it may take the wooden stake.....aka old dracula).

Best thing that could happen for new coach is that Mr Flatt gets his own football radio or TV gig or maybe a sports column in the Tennessean. Otherwise, he will be lurking in the background. Tom Moore (a fine young coach) was not treated very nice by "The Man".

Flatt has a spectacular record, but he will be remembered for the dismemberment of Tom Moore and possibly the TSSAA.

This is some kind of legacy!

I know that the facts in this situation are meaningless to you. However, the newly hired headmaster fired Tom Moore, whom he did not hire. The head football coach serves at his pleasure. The TSSAA issue was resolved and he had the winningest coach in Tennessee High School History at his disposal. In his opinion Tom Moore had under achieved with the talent that he had. Coach Flatt had zero to do with firing Tom Moore other than agreeing to reassume the job. A coach has to bench a beloved senior and play who he thinks is best sometimes. That is what Curt Masters did. He played, what he felt, was his best line-up.

I do not think that Coach Flatt or any of his fans will worry about how people like you will remember him (the type of person who is jealous of anyone successful and never lets the facts get in the way of how they want to feel about a situation). He does not even notice you through a field named after him, a beautiful and thriving school that he helped build and the thousands kids that he impacted and molded during his career. Those are the people that he sees everyday - not the people lurking in their dark holes.

Do you claim to have more knowledge of "what Coach Flatt likes" or how everyone else will remember him? This must be some sort of super power or something.

    • Dyersburg is going to be good, really good. As mentioned, they have a lot of talent on the way and the trio of Chelby, Joya, and KayKay will only be better with a full season together under their belt. To me, playing in Murfreesboro two consecutive postseasons will only serve to make them more dangerous if/when they stand among the final eight teams this March. Experience, good or bad, always makes you better. And not only do they have experience, they know how to win there. Schedules are coming together for all of the teams and I am excited about what I am seeing on the preliminary drafts on Dyersburg’s schedule. I know I am being a tease, but it’s simply not my place to announce what another school is doing. With that said, I won’t go into specifics. However, I am excited about renewed home and away contracts for the non-district portion of the calendar. I think west Tennessee will have a lot of interest as well.
    • What does everyone have in the final 8? In no particular order. 1. Eagleville 2. Gordonsville 3. Greenback 4. Oakdale 5. South Pitt/ East Robertson-- not sure 6. Richland 7. Halls 8. Union City
    • They struggled to field a team last year. I don’t see them being much better?
    • sx good two know thay didun't waint that entarr citty two see yeller/red......
    • Couldn’t agree more.. Tate is a special kinda player , but fortunately for us we get a best of 3 series. I think our pitching is better than last year when we made the trip to west tn. Should be a fun 2 or 3 games.
