The answer to the problem

If you went back to one classification there would not be a state champion, except the mythical championship, because there would not be a playoff system. Schools would play ten games, in a conference with schools of similar size, and perhaps a bowl game and that would be it.

QUOTE(robjim @ Jun 4 2007 - 05:37 PM) 826471274Simple question, why is Alcoa the only 2A-1A school that has a chance? What do they do different? What is their advantage over all the others in those two classifications?

What they do different doesn't matter. I cannot define why a school is good at football. I think the fact they they are open zoned helps, but that is not all there is too it. I think that some of the reasons they are good is tradition, town support, and good coaching. The point is that no matter what it is that makes the good, they are good. And i stand by the fact that with the exception of them, in 1 class no other small school would ever compete.

I did not even consider how long a playoff would have to be... if you take all the teams involved... to have an honest to goodness Playoff system would put the state champion in at around twenty games...

Our state champions are mythical right now. Who's the best? From the DII to 5a, you have multiple teams raising their finger saying they are #1. Sure, in their classification, they are. But are they the best? Are we to assume that the 5a champ is best? Are we to assume the DII is best? Is Maryville and Alcoa the best?

I am talking mainly football here because that is where a good portion of the outcry is coming. Why not two more weeks of games to let classification champs play it out and have a final single state champ...then there is no myth. We have way to many champs and they are all saying they are number one...are they really? My point, this time, is that once again things are not being settled on the field where they should be.

Fifteen games is too many. Seventeen is out of the question. We do have too many classes. I think 2 private and 2 or 3 public would be ideal.

I agree, too many games are being played...and too many teams are going to regions. The playoff system could easily be revamped to cut one game down. Again, someone will cry that they got left out. But if one game week is saved durinng the post season, and some reworking is done for regular season, you can get it right back to 15 games. I personally don't think 16 or 17 games is too many. I've ground out many a season and loved every moment of it...although my wife hated it!

My whole point of proposing the idea was to point out the fact that we have too many championships based on the outcries of teams that feel they are being cheated. So the proposals was to come up with more classifications to pacify more cry babies and that is totally ridiculous. That is going completely the wrong direction.

Cut the amount of games and I'm sure a whole new group of whiners would come out stating how not enough schools get a chance to get to make it to the play offs or finals. Just look at the soccer system how it changed from 2002. Way too many teams in that tournament also if you ask me.

QUOTE(larry @ Jun 5 2007 - 09:40 AM) 8264715272 private school divisions and 3 public sounds about right.

With all privates out, I think four classes would be a good number in Division I. I didn't plan it, just divided it with about 68 in each, but 1A goes to about 500, 2A to about 900, 3A to about 1,300, that would be a general cutoff, not exact.

Here's what Chattanooga might look like:

1A: Copper Basin, Lookout Valley, South Pittsburg, Whitwell, Marion County

2A: Meigs County, Tellico Plains, Polk County, Sweetwater, McMinn Central, East Brainerd

2A: Bledsoe County, Tyner, Sequatchie, Grundy County, Signal Mt, East Ridge, Howard

3A: Sequoyah, Brainerd, Hixson, Chattanooga Central, Red Bank, Cleveland, Walker Valley

4A: McMinn County, Rhea County, Soddy-Daisy, Bradley Central, Ooltewah

Signal Mt and East Brainerd haven't opened yet, so those are still estimates. Stone might be area 3A, Cumberland area 4A, Walker Valley probably has more than those figures now. Rezoning will affect some Chattanooga schools, probably Red Bank, Hixson and Soddy-Daisy. This is just how these regions could go to show it would work out well, still good teams for their sizes in each region. I'd guess Alcoa would move up, probably others in various classes.

Let's all keep in mind that all decisions or changes must make sound economic sense for the schools and the TSSAA. With that being said, I would promote the following ideas:

Go to 4 divisions in football, basketball, and baseball.

All financial aid giving schools must play in 3A or 4A depending on the number of students they have.

Continue to use the multiplier for the private schools that do not offer financial aid.

Play a 10 game football schedule but do not start until the Friday before Labor Day.

Football practice starts on the 1st Monday of August.

Go back to 7 or 8 team districts and you must finish in the top 2 in order to advance to the football playoffs.

All other teams that have 7 wins may attend a bowl game.

It does not make sound economic sense to kick anyone out when you are short of funds. The thing to do is reduce the number of divisions and the number of teams going to the playoffs. By allowing civic organizations to have invitational bowl games the TSSAA would receive the same gate % that they now receive for the playoffs and local organizations could also share in the revenue.

Thats actually not bad. Definitely going the right direction.

Your breakdowns work good, but it still leaves a inordinate number of state champions for the same sport with the same age kids in it. You end up with 4 public, and then whatever number the private divisions decide to come up with...small private, large private, urban private , rural private , financial aid, non financial aid, etc.
