If you look whats going on in in District 9aa basketball is compose of 8 teams, four of them are public:Martin Luther King, Hume Fogg, East Lit, and Pearl-Cohn, and four private schools that are CPA, FRA David Liscomb, and Ezell Harding. These public schools have done pretty well aganist these private schools since the district form two years ago its been Metro Schools that have won the district title games. However it looks to change with the emergance of CPA.. This year however the public schools in this district are having a down year. Merto Schools have a combined record of 21-29 this year while the private schools in this district are soaring on the boys side and thier combined record is 35-28 now you may not say that is two bad but considering how the private schools are getting better in the district it will get a whole lot worse. However the public shools are working like a private school 3 of the 4 public schools have middle schools that feed into their high schools. Which are Hume Fogg, Martin Luther King, and East Lit(note no of them have football programs) so they are in the rebuilding process. However Pearl-Cohn on the other hand is a public school in this district without a feeder middle school and a football program a pretty good one at that. Football is king at Pearl-Cohn followed by there great Marching Band then thier Basketball program. Pearl Cohn use to be both Football and Basketball Power Houses in the mid to late 90s however alot things have change for one thier Football program are now 3a and there basketball program are in AA. But this is the problem for PC basketball program is that the football program normally makes a deep run in the playoffs all the way into basketball season. This year four of the five starters played key rolls on the football field and was prevented to play basketball. Three basketball games were effected because of the football season PC was having. The schoo adenttdence have went from about 900 and has fell to about 600 in a spand of two years, so its not looking any better but there hanging in there.

However if you ask any of the public school coaches in this district if they have a problem with playing private schools in the district they all say no because three of the four have went to state and two of them have won state only one private school have won state in basketball and that is David Liscomb.. they dont care about those private schools because they know how to beat them and they have done so.

If you follow the Kingsport and Johnson City area teams, large schools, I think you'd be concerned with more than the food if the Brentwood Academy types were still in 4A or 5A-and would be even more concerned if there were such teams in your area.

But the food is so important! That nearly square shaped pizza from the cafeteria is not to be taken for granted! People in upper east tennessee realize the difference in not having major private schools in the area. Actually, we take it as a sign that the public schools are doing well enough to avoid the need for private schools. The cost of living is much lower, yet the pay for teachers is so much higher in places such as Kingsport. The comunnity actually cares about the schools there and there is pride. Nashville and other large cities have a higher cost of living, lower wages for teachers, and too many kids and families that could care less. DB, Oak Ridge, Germantown, Brentwood, and Farragut have something special. Kingsport & Oak Ridge pay teachers the most in the state within cities that cost almost nothing as to cost of living. Publics will rule in those areas for a long time as the best teachers are well paid and in schools that care. On a side note, Tennessee needs to get some lottery money in the K-12 systems to improve our schools. Nashville and the surrounding area has more students per ratio in private schools than any other city in the South and that is sad. Brentwood Academy, MBA, etc are no doubt awesome athletic and academic schools but, it is sad that in Nashville nothing can compete.

    • RR, you might remember. Didn’t someone hide the kicking shoe that game? It seems I remember we had missed a kick the week before, and we needed all the points we could get. We thought we had a better chance going for two, so $?&@$ hid the shoe after the first miss that game. No one on our sideline looked for it very hard.
    • I will never forget the 1983 Heritage vs Maryville game. I remember driving home and listening to WGAP. Can't remember the announcers name. He asked Coach Story why he kept going for 2? Story told him " Why didn't you ask Renfro that last year"
    • TSSAA will let them all go to Mase.
    • Well nothing new, the Mustangs are really talented again this coming season!  They very well could go undefeated in regular season.  We shall see what happens in postseason.  I think the path to state title game is a little clearer than years past.  I think the Stangs are going to be really good and I think the traditional teams around in 2A are not going to be as strong.  It should be a fun season!
