Shoemaker was a senior in the '96 football season. That was a big quarterback at 6'9".

Yep, u r correct. Wow, those G.C. teams really look like middle schoolers huh?

They scrimmaged in the '97 football season, and Jake Housewright was on the field. And yes it was the same year that TN High beat DB, without their Head Coach present for the game. And the scrimmage actually was one quarter long because it was a 4 way scrimmage with I wanna say Morristown West and Knox Halls, but don't quote me on those two teams. The quarter long scrimmage played against Gate City ended 21-21.

Wacko??? Where r u man?? U can step in ANY time.

I think you fellas' are smokin some rabbit backer. The "last" time DB and Gate City scrimmaged DB scored 4 or 5 times to Gate Citys 0. Unless Gate City was able to score after DB had left the field I didn't see it. I don't recall any other teams being there, if they were they were well hidden. The scrimmage was a little longer than one quarter and I remember the Gate City fans screeming at the coaches because they ended it early. I guess they wanted to see DB score some more. Houseright was injured in the scrimmage and Gate City couldn't move the ball at all. The only "21" that Gate City had was the average age of their players.

Then you were wrong, it wasn't '97. D-B couldn't have dominated that team. Probably was when Housewright was an 8th grader. I guess you were 100% wrong!

Actually Im 100% correct. It was the year Houseright was a Senior. He was 25 yrs. old I think. And yes DB did dominate, and no Gate City did not score. I guess the Gate City coaches had had enough when Houseright went down and called a end to the scrimmage. DB ran almost all running plays and Gate City could not slow them down. Gate city could not move the ball hardly at all. They seamed really week in the line. I guess maybe those guys were not "holdbacks". The very next year Clark tried to schedule a game with Gate City and they declined the offer. That is a fact. Their hasn't been a scrimmage or any talk about playing a actual game since. The "Blue Devil" faithful can cling to that "one" win as long as they want as it has no effect thirty some years later. Besides the reason Gate City won that game was because they knew where all the "Cow Piles" were.

It's amazing when DB "wins" a scrimmage it means something, but when they get their arses handed to them it's " just a scrimmage". You talk about us winning state that year, and we did. How many state titles has DB won on the field?

It's not too hard to win a state title in VA when you have 12 classifications and 8 teams playing in each one now is it? And another thing, the GC people love to bring up the fact that our state championships were all before 1970. Is it DB's fault that there were no playoffs in TN before that time? Using that same logic, I guess there was no "real" national champion in college football before the BCS either. In case you don't remember that was also voted on by the media.

Virginia has 6 divisions with 16 teams divided up into 4 regions. For example, a team must win 2 games to be declared Region D champions, but they have to go all the way to be declared state champions. Gate City won the Division 3 championship in 1997.

There's a reason why DB was declared state champions.

    • Congratulations to the Warrior baseball team winning the Region Championship.  Last night the football team beat Franklin Co 33-0 in their spring scrimmage. Warriors looked very good. Missing a few players who were playing baseball but still absolutely dominated. A lot of young ones got in halfway through the 3rd when the score reached 33-0. QB Tilton Pickett looked very sharp.  Sam Pickett is on another level this season. Seems to have put on 15 to 20 lbs in the off season and added a step as well. Transfer from last year Williamson caught numerous balls and is very elusive. Lots of athletes on this team. Defense was smothering and will only get better. The head coach from Sewanee was in attendance and offered 2 kids after the game. Could be a special year.
