As an MBA football alum who has followed the Big Red for over forty years, through the good, bad and ugly years, I have seen several rivalries rise and and fall. Most of them were strong because of the mutual respect that both teams had for each other. Although our rivalry with Father Ryan was oftern heated, I never had the impression that the players or fans from either school despised each other. In recent years, the BA/MBA games have generated great intensity and excitement, but again the mutual respect that each of the teams has for the other is evident amoung the players, coaches, parents and fans.

However, over the past couple of years, the envy, anger, disingenuousness and lack of respect that is displayed by many of those who attend and support Ensworth toward MBA is such that these individuals lose all credibility. Conversely, everything I hear from the MBA contingent with respest to Ensworth is positive. Ensworth is a very good school, which already has a strong athletic program, to go along with many other areas of excellence. Considering the growth that Nashville has experienced over the past few decades, there is clearly a need for another good private school in the area, and I am confident that both schools will continue to thrive.

As far the football games go, over the next several years, MBA will win some, and Ensworth will win some. Both schools will pursue excellence, but the quality of the teams will ebb and flow, as is natural. However, it will serve the Ensworth folks well to handle both their successes and failures with dignity and decorum, as is consistent with the goals of the school.

As a good friend of several of the Ensworth coaches and as a good friend of many of the Ensworth families, I wish them all the best for the future of the school and of the football team. These two schools will be rivals for many years to come, and let us all work to making it a great one.

Its okay guys, first off Yamrocks is an Ensworth High School fan who states in other posts how their QB Harrison Ballard is unstoppable (2-9 for 20 yards vs. CPA) and refers to Jefferson their running back when he is running as "BEAST MODE". Lets not take these comments seriously for he is living in the Ensworth bubble and thinks victories over stone memorial high school is some kind of accomplishment.

Yes, BA is a great team, but so is MBA and so is Father Ryan. The fact that you refer back to a scrimmage with Hillsboro and BA is hilarious, bc i brought up Ensworths scrimmage with Hillsboro, (and how they got their ###### kicked) and all the Ensworth fans cried about how that was just a scrimmage and how it would be different in a real game. I love how all these EHS fans come on here and boast about their team. Back to BA though.. if we want to talk about scrimmages lets do so.. Mba scrimmaged Smyrna, who didnt have their star qb, and dominated them with each string that went in. Why is this relevant? Bc the smyrna QB played for less than half the game and BA still struggled to get the win. If you want to talk about scrimmages then id love to talk about the hillsboro vs. EHS scrimmage

Mba will win this one BIG.

Yamrocks is not in the ensworth bubble but i think that he has some ensworth ties and most of his comments about ensworth players are playfully sarcastic. I disagree with those who have insinuated that he has no credability based off of his previous statements. He seems to know a lot.

back to the topic i think MBA will win big but at the same time will have some trouble containing ravenwood's quarterback Becker. I think Ravenwood's saving grace is that they are a physical team led by Beckers hard nosed running. However MBA will have an answer for him and keep him contained. MBA will win this game big.

I disagree that the Ensworth community has displayed a lack of respect for MBA. There may in fact be a few extreme counterexamples from Ensworth aficionados, however these are prevalent at every school including MBA. For example, this past winter when MBA faced Ensworth in basketball, the student section chanted "traitor" as head coach, Ricky Bowers, entered the gym. This was extremely inappropriate and immature. I don't doubt that Ensworth students have appeared just as hateful. But it is unfair to place MBA on a pedestal that they do not deserve. But, I guess, MBA can use all the fans they can get considering the majority of other high schools in Middle Tennessee want Ensworth to show up the big red. As a parent, who has ties at both MBA and Ensworth I think the level of disrespect is mutual and unnecessary. We should be the ones fueling a positive rivalry instead of cheering solely for bragging rights.

Unfortunately, the posts on this board from those who support Ensworth versus the posts of the MBA folks do not support your position. Your own words "But, I guess, MBA can use all the fans they can get considering the majority of other high schools in Middle Tennessee want Ensworth to show up the big red," show the prevalent attitude.

Regarding an MBA crowd shouting "Traitor" at Ricky Bowers as he entered the gym, is this something about which you heard, or were you present for this event? I ask because there was a similar thread accusing BA's crowd of chanting "Here come the poor kids" as an oppsoing team entered the gym...highly inapporopriate and immature, except that it never happened. I would suggest that if your allegation were true (and I wasn't there, so I can't say it didn't happen), there would have been an almighty behind-chewing in assembly the next morning. Whatever differences Ricky and the headmaster might have had, the MBA community remembers and is grateful for his contributions to the school beginning when he was a 12 year old.

As to your assertion that, "But, I guess, MBA can use all the fans they can get considering the majority of other high schools in Middle Tennessee want Ensworth to show up the big red", twas ever thus. Mr. Carter used to tell us that in Nashville, either you hated MBA, or you went to MBA; there was no middle ground.

Mr. Carter was mistaken. I know it may be hard to believe, but MBA is not nearly that important in most people's lives to generate that kind of strong emotion. To communicate to MBA students that it is, does a lot of harm to those who actually beleieved him.

    • I've always been a football fan first and then if you have a band that's awesome. No question that DB has one of the best bands in the country and the whole region should attend at least one DB game just to see their band. I don't know if Nick Saban could come to Kingsport and build a football program that could match the Dobyns Bennett band's success. That said,as mentioned before, a couple of things would have to change in order for the Tribe to just win a state championship on the field.Besides a program that starts from the peewee teams and goes all the way to J Fred with all coaches and weight training { in time }on the same page. Sometimes it also takes a little luck like the 1998 Vols .There are a lot of great athletes at a lot of big schools around the state and just because you want something doesn't mean your going to build a program like Alcoa has. Yes,start at the bottom and have guys that are quality coaches teaching at every level is 100% the first step. Parents can make it a lot easier by getting their young athletes into an early start with conditioning and weights as well when they are old enough to lift.If your son is a man in the weight room before he gets to DB , then it won't take a "Dobbs" coach to make him competitive against other schools athletes when it comes to strength.
    • Dyersburg scrimmaged South Gibson last week
    • A complete cultural change happened at Greeneville and the administration and community opened up their checkbooks.  What a lot of people don't know is Ballard was Zeller's OC for many years and stopped coaching for two years because Zeller and Ballard didn't see eye to eye on some things.  Zeller lead Greeneville to it's first ever Semi Final appearance in 2000 and lost 28-12 at Maryville and had them in the Quarter Finals in 2002 and 2003.  Z was a great coach but lost some control when it came to making workouts mandatory. (He learned from that Mistake and it was at LC when i coached with him.).  Z was let go going into my Senior Year and was replaced by Steve McCurry who was the one that turned the program around.  Steve had won a 4a state championship at AC Reynolds in Asheville and made the administration completely redo the weight room with new equipment, had a football period at the end of the school day to lift, started devil camp, and brought in coaches like Danny Bentley (Still the OL coach), Ballard as the OC, Cody Baugh (QB coach and still there), and even Spradlen who is Greeneville's head coach now as the DB's Coach.  McCurry only coached for two seasons at Greeneville and took a team that had a losing record the year before and finished my Senior Year making it to the Quarters and having a 10-3 record and then followed it up with a Semi Final appearance the next year with an 11-3 record and back to back conference championships.  Loved McCurry to death but the recession hit and the story i heard was he was still buying new equipment for the team that the Principal didn't authorize and his response was "I don't answer to you and only to Niswonger and Bewley" (Two huge donors).  That was it for him and they Promoted Ballard shortly after that.   Greeneville had always been relevant ever since the the late 70's under Coach Fred Sorrell's.  Since Sorrell's took over in 1977 Greeneville overall winning percentage is over 76%.  The biggest reason people might not have thought Greeneville was "Good" until Ballard was Greeneville always played up Classification wise and could never get over the hump. (When there were 3 classifications we played 3a, when it went to 5 we played 4a).  Greeneville is the largest its ever been with 953 students and where playing teams 2 or 3 times there size back in the day (I had a little over 800 kids in the school when i graduated in 2008).  Other teams always would know they would be sore after a game but depth took over and never won a Championship until Greeneville played in the classification the TSSAA actually assigned them. You had names like Dustin Moore (1993 Mr Football for 3a and who Phillip Fulmer said was one of the greatest athletes he ever recruited), James "Mud Turtle" Mayes, Brigham Lyons, Byron Gillespie, Frankie Debusk (National Champion Qb at Furman with GQ), Jasmine Lowery, Cody Baugh, The Greenway Brothers, Joe Watson (Furman), etc.  Now the cultural is from the Pee Wee league up and you grow up as a young kid wanting to wear the Greene and White.  Here is a really good link when it comes to anything Greeneville Football related. https://greenevillefootball.com/   I also don't coach anymore.  Z told me i was to smart with how the school systems are ran these days and ended up going into real estate in Knoxville which has been a great decision for my life.
    • Yes, they will. I'm wondering what kinds of strides Sale Creek will make heading into the second season under Coach Fitz.
