Science Hill @ Dobyns-Bennett

Recommended Posts

I was one of many from Middle TN who warned you about gilligan./benedict arnold/batman was a treehugger.

He has more moving patches on his baggage than a hobo. He has applied for more coaching jobs than anyone in America

His old team Indy...has picked up their game and is in good shape to win the region....duh??

Check the coaches parking area to see if he has his moving van handy this Friday....otherwise he will be "slipping out of town" before long to dupe some other school.

I heard straight from this man's mouth two yrs ago that he would never leave Williamson co because his new wife was from there and he was totally dedicated to staying.

Well, I wouldn't worry too long....he has that ol' resume updated.....what's more when he leaves he will make it sound like your fault.

Just don't send him back here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hope you are wrong, but I am sure a lot of people are wondering the same thing you are. It's all I hear around town sadly. The biggest thing I want the program to focus on during the off season is strength/conditioning. They are much weaker than the other 5a teams and not very explosive. I think SS should be given a pass and go this season. He may have underestimated the "toughness" in East Tennessee. I know when he first arrived he talked about how athletic Indy, Ravenwood and Brentwood's region is. However, he should have focused on how physically tough the teams are in East Tennessee instead of telling everyone about the wonderful speed in Davidson/Williamson Counties. No doubt there are good teams in that area of the state, I know, I used to live down there. But SS needs to come to grips with the style of Football played in East Tennessee. Having a offense that is balanced is the key and Science Hill has shown zero balance this year, in fact, the offense is very, very predictible. I really, really want the Toppers to have a viable Football Program. Lord knows the community needs it. Maybe SS will prove us all wrong. I do think the kids and parents have to stand by SS and give him time. Quiet honestly they have NO choice as recent history has shown us there is no football tradition in Johnson City. The only direction is up! Stay positive!

SS came into Science Hill talking loud and walking proud and I know there is a fine line between confidence and cockiness. I believe SS has crossed the line of cockiness. And he hasn't held true to some basic things he said he would do. He's a big talker! I hope I'm wrong, but I'll be hugely surprised if he leads SHHS deep into the playoffs (ever)! Quit simply, powers that be at SHHS have made a mistake in hiring Smith. Not just because he has lost 6 games in a row, its because he is a blow hard. Don't get me wrong; Smith is a nice guy, a likeable guy. He is just not the man to lead SHHS to the promise land. Like I said, I hope I'm wrong, but it is more than just wins and losses concerning Smith.

I think this stop maybe a little longer because he will have to include in his resume the year 2007 which is Science Hill Football. I never understood why he left Ezel in the first place. Seemed to have it pretty good there even if it is just 1a football. The team from 2001 was a legitimate top 10 all classification team IMHO. Just curious...I thought the privates in Nashvegas paid more than a start up Williamson County School?

The progress the DB Indians have made from week 0 to present is very substantial. One of GC's finest coaching jobs, in my opinion. DB looks ready for the playoffs and they keep improving. Ring has really improved since the Running Game has taken most of the burden of moving the ball for the offense. SHHS started with a ton of enthusiasm with a new coach, uniforms and helmet logo's, but that faided quickly and now the Toppers have a Soap Opera going on.

DB VS SHHS - 85TH ALLTIME MEETING

1st meeting 1921, they played 3 times that year, Science Hill winning the 1st 2 and a Tie (0-0) in game 3

They played twice in 1998, both DB wins (1 in the Playoffs)

Did not play in 1927,1963-1966. I know why they skipped those games in the 60's but not the '27 game, anybody?

DB holds series 56-23-5

Graham Clark is 14-1 vs the Toppers and has Coached 13 straight wins in the series, (longest streak in the series history)

GC is 8-0 at J.Fred Johnson Stadium vs SHHS

Last win for the Toppers in the series was in 1994, a 14-7 win in Johnson City. The last Toppers victory in Kingsport was a 31-0 shutout in 1980

The average score in the GC Era is 33-12. I'll go with that score.

I think this game has the potential to surprise some people. I know that db has been on a winning streak and some of those teams are ones that the Hilltoppers have lost to but I'm trying to gauge of where the kids are before I can really talk about this game. I think that the Topper defense can stop the run, it's been the option that has given them trouble and if the offense can move the ball, then the game is a toss up.

What did he say that makes eveyone hate him so? I live in this city and did not know till late July early August that there was a new coach! I find it hard to find things online that quote him in more than one sentence here and one there! What are you all are gauging/judging this guy based on? I want to read it or see it! Smith has just as much chance leading SH to the promised land as any coach in the schools history! Just as much as GC too! Give the man a break! When he gets the team together hopefully it will be a combination of the community getting behind him, the players lining up, and coaches being able to coach and not worry about the bank account of the DADDYS on the team!

Just worry about Bearden and DB. Nobody else stands a chinamans chance of beating any one of the four Region 2 teams this year. You know it, I know it, everybody knows it. It will take either Bearden or DB's best games of the year to advance past Region 2. We will see.

Agreed. It will take their best games to even win an opening round game.

One thing to remember is that Gilligan and Science Hill has nothing to lose in this game. Their out of the playoff picture, don't have to hide any plays from scouts, and don't have to worrie about injuries to key players. Also if you remember Smith said he was going to bring a new style of football to east tn. He said it wouldn't be unuasual to see them fake punt, go for it on 4th down, fake field goals etc, etc. Since he pointed to this game with DB when he first arrived in Johnson City, and since he has nothing to lose, I look for Gilligan to throw everything but the kitchen sink at the Indians. A win over DB would actually put him in a positive light in Johnson City and everybody would think he's turned things around. Another thing to consider is with this style of "desporation football" if a team has some luck along with it and the other team "dumbs up" it can really change the outcome of the game. But then again if you remember at the first half of the season when DB was 1-3 and Science Hill 3-1 there was alot of talk coming out of Johnson City and they were chomping at the bit. The DB coaches and players remember this and it will be a factor.

Great set up post to get some interest in this thread. D-B is much improved with one of Graham's best coaching efforts (and his staff). The battlefield promotion of Sensibaugh was a key to an offense which was based on the 7 on 7 passing scrimmage approach. All of the 7 on 7 stuff this summer was of no value to D-B. This was a fundamental mistake and is an extension to the strangest off season in D-B football history which included spring practice in the dead of winter. In any event, the ship was righted in the nick of time.

Science Hill is in complete melt down mode. Much has been said. I would only add the JC School Board people who hired Smith should be held accountable. He is the worst coaching hiring decision in recent memory. The next worst one was when Central passed on Ralph Nelson a few years ago. Look where they are now. Science Hill is headed to the same territory.

Well, if you're enough of an internet junkie, you can find all of his quotes since taking the job back in the Spring. What he COULD have done was to say "Thanks,.....I'm honored......it's a great opportunity.....we're going to work hard....."etc. What he strongly implied was that he was going to bring a never-before-seen wide open offensive attack that would stress all of the defenses in East Tennessee. He went through a bunch of stuff about how he didn't just let defenses sit back, he would do the dictating of the pace, he would always have people off balance, etc. His main mistake was to ever mention D-B. He did at length and even said he would be spending most of his coming days in the spring on the Indians.

Well Gilligan, welcome to J. Fred! You are about to find out what 10 generations of Kingsport hating Daddies have lived through. The lights will be bright, the crowd will be bigger than anything you've ever lined up in front of, the warhoop will be playing, and your players will be pale.......good luck with that!

    • Congratulations to the Warrior baseball team winning the Region Championship.  Last night the football team beat Franklin Co 33-0 in their spring scrimmage. Warriors looked very good. Missing a few players who were playing baseball but still absolutely dominated. A lot of young ones got in halfway through the 3rd when the score reached 33-0. QB Tilton Pickett looked very sharp.  Sam Pickett is on another level this season. Seems to have put on 15 to 20 lbs in the off season and added a step as well. Transfer from last year Williamson caught numerous balls and is very elusive. Lots of athletes on this team. Defense was smothering and will only get better. The head coach from Sewanee was in attendance and offered 2 kids after the game. Could be a special year.
