Does a loss entitle you to complain about reffing?

Topgun, I'll try to answer your question. My experience is the spouse of a 25+ year hs official who has called a state champ. game who is currently on hiatus and a bit of pain to watch a game with (he's too objective!). Other than that, just a football mom and fan.

The refs are usually chosen on a variety of factors for champ games. These include grade on the written exam (not a walk in the park), on field grading throughout the year by state superivisors and years of experience. Overall not an extremely easy trip.

I do believe they should be accountable and most usually are. Film is a great way especially if it is clear. It is a great training tool especially for those who have never seen the situation. Most officials do not have any access to "film".

The $25 an hour needs to make sure that it includes the meeting night for 2 hours and extra meeting before and after games. You must also consider expenses that the fees must include that officials themselves are responsible for...uniforms, equipment, fees. I love Boyd Buc, they give officials socks! The food is not always provided and the close parking is usually necessary to get them out. The police escort at bigger games is due to past threats to the physical safety of the officials. Great job for $80.

Most do not for the money, but for the love of the game and trying to stay in contact with it. They are human and do make mistakes. Most hate that. They really don't want to be seen.

Now that I'm off my box, I'm the first to let my refing spouse know if I feel a mistake was made! Hopefully, me and the announcer know the rule and the mechanics!

Thanks for the reply. You have enlightened me and others I'm sure on just what is involved to officate a game. Meetings before and after a game, on field grading throughout the year by state superivisors, didn't know that about that either. As far as access to film, I'm sure the schools would provide it if asked. As far athe police escorts and parking , that was mentioned with tounge in check. That's the world we now live in. Even coaches need them from time to time. Bottom line is a lot of folks believe that the officiating seems to be getting worse every year and the powers that be (TSSAA) are not doing anything to improve the situation. Maybe I'm wrong. I hope so.

Thanks again!!!

People are going to complain about the refs if they make ###### calls late in the game in the semifinals of the state playoffs. No one from Smyrna can tell me that the refs called the game fairly...how can u rule who has a fumble without even clearing the pile? There are pics which clearly show a pass that the refs called out of bounds when the player was clearly in (would've been a td and we didn't score that drive) and the onsides kick where the refs say the smyrna player had control of the ball when the picture clearly shows the ball coming out before he was on the ground. That is when ppl complain about refs, I know the refs didn't lose the game for BHS b/c we didn't come out ready to play in the 1st half, but it's sad when it comes down to refs deciding a game.

Just in case you didn't buy what the others said right after your post...I was also at the game sitting on the Smyrna side (only because that's where the seats were...have no dog in that hunt)...watching that play through binoculars and had a clear look...the receiver came down out of bounds. First foot was out then second foot even further out. Sorry.

Also watched the last onside kick through binoculars...Smyrna receiver dropped the ball just before hitting the ground but I couldn't tell who recovered because of the sheer number of bodies that dove on top of the ball. The official that made the call that the ball was dead was on the Bearden side of the play and there was no way he could have seen the fumble.

The fact is that Bearden lost primarily because their QB couldn't hit his receivers until midway through the fourth quarter. #9 was overthrowing open receivers all night or, in one case, overthrew a receiver who was being double covered and totally missed seeing a wide open receiver that was running about 20 yards to the left and had no one anywhere near him. Even one of the Smyrna DBs (who was about 15 yards away) pointed to the open receiver at the end of the play as if to ask who was supposed to be covering that guy.

These two defenses were both exceptional all night. Wilks made a couple of terrific catches in traffic that really showcased his talent.

$25 an hour is it? Now that is WAY too low of pay for what they do. Think about it in everyday terms and job pay for what YOU do. Yes they get to be at some great games but they also do not actually get to see the whole game like fans do. They have their particular areas to cover and that is about all they get to see if they are doing their job right.

The average plumber in Tn makes about $40 and hour and does NOT have to put up with near the abuse refs do. Still think refs are overpaid?

Every thread I read ex-post facto is always peppered with complaints of how "We would have won the game had the refs not been in your back pocket"

Is this really a good way of showing sportsmanship?

I believe every team has had their share of bad calls...however it seems that it's exclusive to the losing teams. Life is too short to blame consequences on others. Take care of your own business and most likely the failures of others won't take away your goals.

You say the complaining seems to be exclusive to the losing teams. Why would the winning team complain? Especially if, the bad calls has caused the team to win the game. If the winning team of a badly referred game lost their next game in a badly referred game then they would become a losing team complaining. Referees should be held accountable. Each year the TSSAA should review tapes. If there is a referee who has consistently made mistakes, he should not be allowed to referee. I am human and make mistakes on my job but if I consistently make mistakes and especially the same mistakes, I would be fired.

Never said they were over paid. It doesn't matter if they're paid $5.00 hr. Some, not all, don't do their jobs correctly, are unfair or biased, are there to be a deciding factor/create drama, or be the center of attention. And these guys need to go. I'm sure everyone knows of some that are like this. This is more the exception than the norm. Most do a great job and let the teams play, stay out of the way, and are fair. We need more like them.

As far as pay goes. According to the attached link, 25 bucks hr is pretty good money in TN.

Or google pay scale in tn.

you seriously need to watch the game film of that catch. your wr's feet, both of them, came down out of bounds. the first one on the line, half his foot was over, the other foot was completely out of bounds. heck, find the news guy that was standing right there, he'll tell you he same thing.

I have talked to that news guy, heck I even went into his van after the game to look at it. It was clearly in bounds when he gained possesion of the ball. there was a step where his left foot was half out of bounds so it shouldn't have been a touchdown, but that was definately a catch. The picture that you smyrna people are talking about is about 3 steps later when he had already turned his head around. Unless he caught it looking at the endzone (which he didn't) he was in. That said there was plenty of blown calls in both directions, but we lost so we complain. If you had lost we would be hearing the same things from you.

Thanks

I was able to hook it to my big screen and slow the play and stop it and zoom in

left foot clearly on the line right foot 3 inches out

however it was a bang bang play at full speed and by his right foot being so far out there is no way it would be called in by the official.

All I know is Bearden and Smyrna do have the right to complain about the refs, because I was at that game and it WAS horribly officiated all around. There were many terrible ball spots, a couple unnecessary flags, bad calls on complete/incomplete catches (besides the TD out of bounds catch), more than 1 missed call on possession, among all this were plenty of holding, passing interference, ect. flags there were never thrown. This was all around and I don't know if it would've changed the winner but in my opinion, both teams are ok to complain about the refs.

Seemed to me like the fans were more outraged about the red zone fumble and onside kick call, rather than the receiver out of bounds call.

Also it looked to me like the refs refused to explain their calls or simply what was happening to the caoches. Several times I saw coaches signaling for the refs to come tell them what was going on and the refs flatly ignoring them.

Does the losing team have the right to complain about reffing? I'm not sure, but I do know both teams should complain about that game imparticular. I hope they inform TSSAA for future games.

    • And can you tell me who those two quarterbacks were, and every kid that was put into college from Bearden is a Bearden kid? It’s kind of why they graduated from Bearden.   and I would definitely not consider ETSU “waste”…
    • Most of this is complete gibberish. But the one part I could decipher is putting kids in college. This coaching staff hasn’t put a single Bearden kid in college. They completed wasted one of the best WRs in East TN and have ruined two talented QBs. All because they’re in over their heads.
    • Well, I’d hope the new coaching staff thinks they are all that because they can always walk around the school, anytime they want, thinking that, especially for what they’ve done for the student athletes and the players, putting more kids in college in his first season than the old coaching staff did in numerous years combined, but we will just sweep over that because I know you don’t like facts. But trust me, nobody wanted Mr. Big britches, made the star player switch to quarterback, which is ultimately the reason he ended up transferring to play the position. He loved, but unfortunately, had to be at another school because Mr. Big Britches doesn’t like when a teenager knows more than him, but can’t expect much coming from a guy who used all class throwing pencils up into the ceiling and making fun of football kids who were failing class right to their face, and in front of numerous students, even projecting on the board most of the time.
    • After that first paragraph, I can see why you’re a TA and not a teacher. Have you made the move from South Knoxville to Bearden yet?    Maybe he left because he is an actual teacher and coach, and didn’t want to be associated with a group of foul mouthed middle school coaches who like to pretend they’re big time.
    • Yeah and the coach is gone. Whole bizarre situation here. We played them a couple of times at MTSU last few years. She was a player for sure.
