Maybe depending on how some new schools/programs fall in the classifications, all the Division I privates except Knoxville Catholic, Notre Dame and Lipscomb would be in Class A in basketball and other non-football sports. Those three would be in AA as it is now. There would be 15 public schools larger than the largest Class A private, Chattanooga Christian, so unless any have grown a lot I'd say Class A is where all but the three mentioned will be.

In football, using the latest TSSAA numbers, Goodpasture, CAK and USJ would be right at the 1A/2A divide, and would be the third, fourth and fifth smallest 2A teams. A few schools have added teams in the last few years such as David Brainerd. Any more in the 1A level might push those three up further, any larger adding teams such as Signal Mountain might push them back down into 1A. That's depending on how relevant those enrollment figures still are.

2A would also include Chattanooga Christian, Knoxville Catholic, Lipscomb and Notre Dame, by these numbers. The rest, Boyd-Buchanan, CPA, Knoxville Grace, etc would be in 1A.

One mistake in the article, Sequoyah in Monroe County has about 950, unless they've lost a ton of students there's no way they could possibly be in 2A.

More for people around Chattanooga, here is what the area football regions might be:

1A

David Brainerd

Temple

Silverdale Academy

Chattanooga Grace

Copper Basin

Lookout Valley

South Pittsburg

Whitwell

Boyd-Buchanan

The Signal Mountain team is supposed to begin in 1A, that would make 10 teams.

2A:

Chattanooga Christian

Marion Co.

Meigs County

Tellico Plains

Bledsoe Co.

Tyner

Notre Dame

Polk Co.

3A:

Sequatchie

Sweetwater (possibly, if the region is too small without Sequoyah or Brainerd)

Grundy Co.

Howard

McMinn Central

East Ridge

Sequoyah (not far from 4A, by these numbers)

Brainerd (would be the largest 3A football team in the state by these numbers, so they could go 3A or 4A)

4A

Hixson (they would be one of the smallest 4A teams so they could go 3A especially if their enrollment keeps dropping)

Chattanooga Central

Red Bank

Cleveland

Walker Valley

I could see White County being in it again, plus Cumberland County if their new enrollment is at 4A after losing so many to Stone.

5A

McMinn County (fourth smallest 5A by these numbers, could drop to 4A)

Rhea County

Soddy-Daisy

Bradley Central

Ooltewah

If Walker Valley is 5A and McMinn remains, they should get their own region away from the Knoxville teams.

Old Pirate says here we go another private (Boyd Buccanan) complaining about the number of players.

???The move didn??™t set us back. We have been fairly competitive,??? Reynolds said. ???Numbers hurt us. A lot of the 2A schools we play carry 70-75 kids, and Smith County had 80. We have 53-55 kids in our best years, and when you get into injury situations the numbers put you behind the curve.???

Well Hello, Coach Reynolds, the small 1A public schools "NEVER" have near the number that BB has, and their kids are home grown and not recruited from various middle schools, neighboring states and counties.

Example: South Pitt, normally 35-36 players, about 20 players less than BB and the rest of the normal privates. OP says "No sympathy here Buc fans"

Other than Smith, with one of the largest enrollments in 2A, who would that be? I can't think of one 70-75 player team that Boyd would have seen in the region or 2A playoffs since moving up from 1A. Certainly not "a lot."

Double standard again. You accuse Boyd of complaining about numbers when they are playing against 2A schools with more players. Then, what do you do? COMPLAIN ABOUT HAVING LESS PLAYERS THAN BOYD. Can you have it both ways? /dry.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="

It was nice to see Vic Grider show a true competitive spirit in his comment and basically say Boyd or no Boyd we are just gonna go out there and compete. No excuses just simply stated like a real man. Lets really stop with all the Boyd recruiting comments...they are ignorant and unfounded. If Boyd was recruiting they are doing a fairly lousy job of it right now. Their football team was very subpar in a mostly weak region and no offense to the boys that tried their best but their guys basketball team was one of the worst in school history. They lost to Brainerd by about 60. I honestly don't know if any Boyd guys team has lost a game by that much before.

OP needs to watch the 'recruited' stuff...we have never recruited athletes. And we never asked for your sympathy. Coach Reynolds wasn't complaining, he was answering a question about what it is like to play schools 2 and 3 times your size every game. Pulling the quote out of context so you can claim something that isn't there is poor. Frankly, South Pitt is a great program with great kids, coaches, and fans, except for a few...

I don't know why you are whining, you guys crushed us last season and have a winning record against us. How many kids did you send to the next level? How many games did you lose? Who was that in the Clinic Bowl? I always thought being in the same region helped both our programs. There were several seasons that the team that made it out of the 3rd round game was gonna win it all. Are you scared OP? Because I know that your coaches and players are not. They, at least, are quality people. We look forward to the South Pitt game every year, even when you whip us. It makes us better. Why don't you think that way too?

Old Pirate says yeh, go ahead Bighurt and show all of us how that private school education made you more intelligent. OP should not even respond to such a ridiculous question. But OP will try to help you out. The fact is SP has always played bigger schools with more students/players. It is only recently that with the new privates in Chattanooga that SP is sometimes playing schools with less enrollment.

OP is NOT complaining about the numbers, it's about the lying about incentives for prospects. OP's sister is a neighbor to a big private school coach that would readily provide names of the so-called privates that they compete with for prospects. OH,YES Please keep asking questions and continue with denials. This message board is a weapon, just ask TT. Some more will be caught before long.

Old Pirate says the BB and SP games have become a great series! OP hopes the series never............................................ ends. No............ OP is not scared... simply just tired of the private's denials about incentives such as: breakfast programs, future preacher programs, boosters paying tuitions and etc. Since you don't know OP be careful about attempting to hurt his feelings.

Please don't attempt to convince anybody that BB wants to continue playing up in classification. The problem coach Reynolds was referring to is one the small schools have "always" had to contend with and yes one BB faced when starting up their program. The privates don't have the same challenges as the rural public schools. The publics have to take "ALL" kids regardless, where the privates pick and choose. Since OP has family that attend BB. BB would be the school of choice for OP, if OP was young & living in Chatt. OP is very familar with the current public school situation in Chatt. that ranks poor.

OP can be friend or foe depending on the amount of truth one is willing to render up for discussion. But don't attempt to make it sound as if all has been on the up & up.

Wealthy boosters are around for usually a short period of time and prospecting can produce lean times.

OP says if it smells like a skunk, then it can only be a skunk.

Would you care to elaborate on the implications, or do you want to go on making it sound like we are doing something wrong but not really saying anything?

The taking all kids isn't all bad you know. There are some kids who are great athletes that have played at SP who wouldn't have made it academically in a small private...I can think of about 8 or 10 over the last 10 years that were better athletes than anyone we have ever had.

I don't know about third party sister acquaintances who coach at unnamed privates, but I think that you may be confusing us with some other larger DII schools when you talk about boosters paying tuition.

I've played the gossip game too, but I choose to ignore things that I hear about other programs from third parties. They are wrong most of the time anyway. Usually passed along from someone who has a bone to pick and is willing to make crap up to sound like they have a reason to be mad.

Tomcats smell like skunks when they spray. So do bobcats. I'm thinking mistaking the second for a skunk that you're trying to get out from under the house would be unpleasant.

    • I will never forget the 1983 Heritage vs Maryville game. I remember driving home and listening to WGAP. Can't remember the announcers name. He asked Coach Story why he kept going for 2? Story told him " Why didn't you ask Renfro that last year"
    • TSSAA will let them all go to Mase.
    • Well nothing new, the Mustangs are really talented again this coming season!  They very well could go undefeated in regular season.  We shall see what happens in postseason.  I think the path to state title game is a little clearer than years past.  I think the Stangs are going to be really good and I think the traditional teams around in 2A are not going to be as strong.  It should be a fun season!
    • I would not put too much stock into the UH over Eagleville. From what I understand they were pretty banged up in that tourney. Catcher was out, they were throwing pretty deep in their bullpen and a few key players were beat up in their infield. Sounds like they are pretty healthy heading into the district tournament. Look at their schedule, they played some really good teams.
