Sullivan South vs. Greenville

Just because Curt was a 3 year starter doesn't mean anything. It is very seldom...no it almost never happens that a player starts before his Senior year. Especially in successful programs. Jamie Crawford is case in point. He is leading DB with aplomb. Bradley will be fine. By playoff time he will be high dollar. Curt's situation at South was an extremely unique one. Not only was he the best QB but he was the best RB also. Not to mention return man DB etc...Curt's experience ballooned because if he wasn't throwing it he was running it. He came to rely on himself because that was the percentage choice for success on any given play. Bradley can't get his confidence ballooned by being a one man show because he has to share. If we had a meciocre' RB then Bradley would be a one man show also. And it's not the one man show thing it's the offense we run. Not just any RB can aclimate to the spread option. It is different. It takes a special RB to have success out of this O. But we happen to have one that understands it. It took Taylor 3 years to understand it. I mean I think it is evident that he is a different RB than last year. Suffice to say that Curt's ability level was a few notches above anyone in the state not just in our area. Can Bradley get to that point? Not overnight. Be patient, Bradley is not going to be signing with anybody next week. He is still learning the game. If he is getting communication from major colleges it's because of "potential". Don't you think a coach can see what could be? Look at Tyler Gaby. Don't you see the potential there? Do you already have to be a celebrated athlete to get a D1 ride. I don't think so. I think depending on the school and the needs they have to fulfill they can see the potential in someone and sign them based on that alone. That's why they are coaches of these programs. So does Bradley have that potential? I will let you be the judge of that. But one thing is for sure...when you see each game bette than the last it might be an indication that he has something to offer.

Most exceptional athletes will start before there senior year in NET??¦what are you talking about!! /ohmy.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":o" border="0" alt="ohmy.gif" /> If you are being seriously recruited by a major D1 school, I would be 98.8999% sure that you have heard from them before your senior year! And Comp I know what you??™re going threw but you know as well as I do that if you??™re not a starter by your junior year in a NET school (probably by your sophomore year actually) you are probably not being looked at by a major D1 school??¦.you know that!!! But the good news is that D2 and D3 are usually open options until the ???fat lady sings???.

i"m not sure what exactly you meant by "college is college"---but college "ain't" college. If you are wanting to play college football and then work for the highway department , well, o.k., but if you have high academic expectations, then "college is---NOT---college". I'd rather go to Princeton and be water-boy than be the star at many other colleges. I'm not making an argument related to your post, as much as simply making a statement.

But Princeton doesn't give scholarships to water boys and for every doctor or lawyer that graduates from Ivy leagues, there are 10 that parlay their 150K ivy league education into a 40k teaching job, you can certainly do that with a degree from ETSU and not have 'ol sallie mae living in your spare bedroom for 20 years. So unless you just want a glittery resume, college IS college.

Oh and maybe you should ask some of these "highway department" employees that work for the state what they're makin' sometimes.

???You shouldn??™t come in here and Dis a Kid that has worked so hard bla bla bla bla bla??¦??¦???! Do you really think you are the first to make that repetitious statement? And then you can say ???son I did it to protect you from the REAL WORLD???. HELLO??¦if you haven??™t realized it??™s usually only the strong that get ahead in this world and even they have to know somebody!! Heck??¦my own son STILL thinks he has a chance to play over seas. But I quickly tell him that he better finish his education because after two more years the only basketball he will more than likely be playing will be at the Y. And then I tell him to look around at all your feinds that were exceptional college athletes and thought the same thing, and my point is proven. I??™m not saying to shatter a kids dream, but while you??™re aiming for the stars make sure you have the moon in sight??¦because that??™s where you will probably end up??¦if you??™re lucky. True story??¦I have a friend that was drafted to the NFL and was cut from two different teams in two consecutive seasons during the preseason because of injury. He went on to have a short but successful carrier in Arena Football in NC, and then he turned to selling cars in Nashville. For many years we never saw or heard from him and he was very distant. His Mom told me that he recently got a head coaching position at a high school in Maryland. I saw him at his Father??™s funeral and convinced him to come over. During our catching up I asked him why we never heard from him all these years. His reply was that he was embarrassed about his failure in the NFL and was ashamed to face any of the home town people and friends because there was so much expectation of him and the NFL that he felt he let everybody down. You see??¦that bar you??™re hanging WAYYYYY up there for BD could just hang him one day??¦if you??™re not careful.

Great post.

On the topic of college, its what you make of it. A highly motivated individual at Northeast state can be receiving a far better education than someone who lays around and plays video games all day at princeton. It all comes down to what you want to make of yourself. However I don't think the statement that "college is college" is true. They each offer a unique experience, and what it comes down to is not whats on the resume, but what impact it had on your character. A kid doesn't have to play college football to be successful or develop character, he just needs to find a place that will push him out of his comfort zone a bit, whether it be in football, some other sport, or just the classroom. Well, there's my life speech for the day. /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" />

I'll give you that one Cap, that was a good post. But I'm just trying to say we as men should be careful as to what we say about these kids as to not deflate them if they themselves surf these forums. By no means am I trying to protect "Lil Johnny", a dose of reality is great for anyone, Just the way you had worded it seemed like a slap in the face to the kid and truthfullness of his statements. If I misunderstood hey I'm man enough to say "My bad" so lets just move on. /popcorneater.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":popcorneater:" border="0" alt="popcorneater.gif" />

Great posts by Comp and Cap. My comments, for what they are worth, follow. BTW, I just finished watching the CMS Game of the Week and am amazed at the great coverage HS Football is getting on cable and the internet. We have come a long way, baby.

Most players who are recruited for college level play do start more than one year, but not all. I think following CP in the Carter Spread attack is not too much of a knock. I agree with Comp that the CP three year starter situation at SS was unusual. My SS contacts remind me that the QB starter at the end of Spring before the '05 season was a senior (Hicks - ?) who got hurt during the summer and ended up playing a lot of WR. In fact, he started at QB and won the two most important games of the season for SS that year (THS and Betsy) after CP was hurt. SS had a luxury of depth at QB that year.

The main thing, that everyone who knows about the reality of the recruiting process, is summer camps. If BD wants to play in college, hopefully, he wore out the college camp scene this past summer. If he did not, it is over. BTW, that concept applies to anyone in this area. Because we are not a hotbed of recruiting talent you must make your own noise and promote yourself. This is a major reality and costs a lot of time and money, up to and including hiring an agent / promoter. If you can't do it, you have no chance to be a D-I recruit. A lot of D-I programs have a very specific set of physical requirements they look for in various positions. If you love the game of football and do want to play in college, there will be opportunities in NAIA/D3 or D2.

A final comment brought home to me by the CMS telecast and the earlier post involves credit for the recent success of SS. While the focus of this and many other threads has been on the players, I have to wonder if Coach Carter, his staff, and his "program" at SS are not getting enough credit. His record is impressive, the facility looked great on TV, and the crowd looked good. Kudos to all those who have been involved in the SS resurgence. It has been the most compelling HS Football story in NET over the past few years.

Good point! The coaches at South are not getting enough credit!

Forget all this nonsense about D1, etc. Let the kids play the game!

I totally disagree with you. If you know anything about the job market, especially the high paying jobs, those employers know which schools have the higest rated Engineering Schools, which schools have the highest rated Medical schools, the highest rated Accounting schools, etc., etc., etc. I don't remember seeing Carson Newman, Tusculum, etc. on that list. You can disagree with me all you want, but you'll be--simply---wrong. The old addage--"you get out of it what you put into it", not only applies to effort, but also applies to investment. Oh, --and I know a highway department worker---he mows my yard, cleans my car, and does all my handy-man work around my house on his free time--trying to support his wife and kid. You can reply if you like, but I'm done with this one---it's not football, and I don't know why I even got into this discussion.

You got into this discussion because you obviously know everything and the rest of us are just uneducated morons who know nothing of the job market. For the fun of it you might want to look at the top undergrad engineering and business schools....you might not find as many Ivy league schools as you think.

    • I will never forget the 1983 Heritage vs Maryville game. I remember driving home and listening to WGAP. Can't remember the announcers name. He asked Coach Story why he kept going for 2? Story told him " Why didn't you ask Renfro that last year"
    • TSSAA will let them all go to Mase.
    • Well nothing new, the Mustangs are really talented again this coming season!  They very well could go undefeated in regular season.  We shall see what happens in postseason.  I think the path to state title game is a little clearer than years past.  I think the Stangs are going to be really good and I think the traditional teams around in 2A are not going to be as strong.  It should be a fun season!
    • I would not put too much stock into the UH over Eagleville. From what I understand they were pretty banged up in that tourney. Catcher was out, they were throwing pretty deep in their bullpen and a few key players were beat up in their infield. Sounds like they are pretty healthy heading into the district tournament. Look at their schedule, they played some really good teams.
