Advice needed..School choice

Greetings,

Thought this would be a good place to start.

I just moved to Nashville from Atlanta, and need some advice as it pertains to my 13yo/8th grade son and which school to send him to next year. Not knowing anything about Nashville or its school systems I took a job up here and found a nice house on the west side of town (West Meade). It didn't take me long to find that the public school system here is not as good as the one we left in Atlanta. They do offer APP courses which my son is taking advantage of, but the Athletics are far inferior. We are zoned for Hillwood and as you may or may not know they have won 1 game in the last 3+ years.

In Gwinnett County Georgia, where We moved from, the public schools are KING. It didn't take me long to figure out that Private Schools Rule this city. Should I send my son to Hillwood and role the dice, or join the ranks and fork up $10-$20k for Private School? Will the rezoning of Hillwood cause better student/athletes to return to the Public school system, or is it too late?

FYI, my son is a Top Tier Student-Athlete. I am biased, but I have coached 14 DIV-1 football players in the past 12 years and know what a Top-Tier Athlete looks like, and my son is one. 13yo, 5'11" 150lbs, 4.85-40, Cannon of an arm, smart, hits like a train, super glue hands, can pretty much do it all. Most likely top out at around 6'3" - 6'5" be a Tightend or Wide Receiver in HS, but has played everything but DT and OL in his 1st 7 years of playing.

Also, we are not Wealthy.

So what would you do? Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer on the subject.

Riverdale is the BEST... WE DO HAVE THE GREATEST STUDENT BODY AND FACULTY IN THE STATE OF TN ...

does he play baseball? we have a great baseball program as well...

On a side note a coach cannot go and talk to you BUT you can go talk to them I would go talk to the coaches and talk and listen to them on how they run their program and look at that coaches team play. If you are as knowledgable as you say you are after you talk and listen to a coach then watch his team play you will know where you would want to be

Thanks for the quick reply Riverdaleman.

Yes he does play Baseball. Once again, he plays just about every position, but exceeds at Pitching. Not alot of movement on his fastball but it hits about 75mph on a reg basis. Struck out 9 in 5 innings in his last appearance this past spring. This in a 15u league, against a Brentwood team where half their boys drove themselves to the game. Here is my son, 13, pitching against "15" year olds (who are driving). After the game the opposing coach asked what High School he attended, I said "Uh, he's in 7th grade", lol

I have heard good things about Riverdale, problem is, here we are in West Nashville, with a house we can't sell. So we are pretty much stuck. It's either Hillwood, Hillsboro or Private School. With those choices what would you do?

If he is a D-I prospect. it will not cost nearly that much to go to a private school in that area.

No brainer man, send him to Hillsboro. Top level team year in and year out, and unless you are wanting to pony up for a private school, it's the best Nashville team there is. As for Hillwood, I don't see them getting any better any time soon, they need to drop down to 4A to have a chance because they've just been out of their element since they moved up. Keep your kid out of Hillwood!!

That was one of my questions, do you think that if the rezoning takes effect next year, some of the more athletic and talented kids will start going to their zoned Hillwood Cluster instead of Private School? And will the drop to 4A, which they most likely will do with less than 1000 students, help them be more competitive?

Since Hillwood is not passing the grade I do have the right to apply for Hillsboro but don't know much about them. Thanks for the advice, I will check them out.

Would you consider Private School, if you could get 50-90% of the tuition in Financial Aid?

lol, that's some good stuff, I might just take you up on it if what I am reading is correct

My son is a JR on the baseball team and we are really looking forward to baseball this season we will contend to win our district they are working hard everyday...my kids love baseball i love football i do not know where i went wrong lol my 16 yr old is 6'1 about 185 so he has pretty good size too...But i would seriously talk to coaches that you are looking for him to go..is your son in 7th grade or 8th grade right now? if he is in 7th over the spring i would go and watch a lot of baseball and talk to coaches to be honest though the metro school are weak in baseball but i would visit teams and meet coaches then in fall do the same in football if he is in 8th grade i would go watch the school that wont make the playoffs that way you can go to the playoffs to watch the other schools but i would talk the head coach and i would watch their teams

    • I don't believe they have anyone that is surbers caliber but a decent staff overall.
    • Richland plays at McKenzie on Wed.  Should be a good series.  Does Richland have good pitching?
    • Congratulations to the Warrior baseball team winning the Region Championship.  Last night the football team beat Franklin Co 33-0 in their spring scrimmage. Warriors looked very good. Missing a few players who were playing baseball but still absolutely dominated. A lot of young ones got in halfway through the 3rd when the score reached 33-0. QB Tilton Pickett looked very sharp.  Sam Pickett is on another level this season. Seems to have put on 15 to 20 lbs in the off season and added a step as well. Transfer from last year Williamson caught numerous balls and is very elusive. Lots of athletes on this team. Defense was smothering and will only get better. The head coach from Sewanee was in attendance and offered 2 kids after the game. Could be a special year.
