Does that mean Alcoa/Maryville can recruit? (discretely)

When a kid tranfers in from another school system and He/she does not live in the Alcoa city limits , then he/she has to wait a year for his/her eligibility. If they move into the Alcoa city limits , then they are elgible to play any sport. Its not hard to understand , unless your one of the people that automatically say we recruit players , just cause we beat your school 50-0. Havent we had this discussion for ummmm....say......5 years? /hungry.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":hungry:" border="0" alt="hungry.gif" /> /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" />

You seem to understand this. Do you know how many there are around the state? Both Closed and open.

Question...if a young man doesn't live in the city limits (any, not just ALcoa) can they workout etc. with the team? I am not up on this issue myself, but it appears you know something about it all. Basically they have to sit out a year before they can play.....is that right? Maybe you know the answer to this one too.........can a private student transfer from one to the other and play any time they arrive?

BCS states his opinion and insults West TN football and everyone gets all uptight. Relax a little. He is just under the impression that West TN has struggled in 2A the last few years, I am sure if you all correct him he will come around. Just show him the West TN dominance that is in the 5 classes and he will take back what he said. Let us know where the East has been weak in the championships and he will recant his statements. Actually, upon further review I agree with his assessment of the West. Then again Milan is the best of the west and they will be meeting the beasts from the east in what I expect to be a battle.

Fact is, West TN has been on a tough road in 2A and it will be tough for them on Friday as well. I for one am ecstatic that Milan beat the perennial runners up in Goodpasture. This increases my excitement to make the trip and see what I expect will be a tough game. Alcoa needs to heal up and I am sure they will plan for Milan and bring it. I predict that Alcoa will win this one by 14 or 21. It will be up in the air for most of the game but depth and Rankin will pull them ahead. Sam Thompson will play like a man possessed and his play along with Robinson and the line will decide the outcome. Alcoa faced a tough CAK team and won, they overcame a turnover bug in that game. Then they played poorly for 2 quarters on offense against Loudon. Faced a tough Marion team and pulled away when it mattered but they never trailed. Alcoa whipped up on White House who came one game from state and played Maryville tough as well and they are also going for 5. Alcoa is tested and ready. If Alcoa fires on all cylinders and Milan allows Alcoa to get in their head then it gets real ugly. I don't see that happening. I see a tough game on both sides with Alcoa winning their fifth consecutive.

Does anyone know if Rankin still recruits players from out of the school district or school zone to play for his team like he did when he was a Riverdale in the Boro?

Yes, Rankin travels statewide picking up players and begging them to come play for him. The hard work by the kids, the tradition, the discipline he has instilled, the desire to win, the superior coaching, the pride of accomplishment, the YOUTH PROGRAMS, none of this makes Alcoa champions, only the "recruiting".

In case you are to dense to understand the sarcasm I gratuitously used in my previous post let me clarify something. Alcoa has home grown talent. No need to recruit, it grows in Blount County, that is why Maryville is good as well. But congrats on using the R word, that almost makes this Alcoa thread complete. No Alcoa or Maryville thread is complete without the use of the R word, open zones, and of course posts by FBE.

Lets see:

Recruiting- check

FBE- check

Open Zones- CHECK

Well that took long enough.

Here is how it works, to my knowledge.

If you live in Alcoa or Maryville you pay both City and County taxes. Therefore you can send your kids to either the City or the County school. If you live outside the city you must pay tuition to attend. If you played sports at a previous school you must wait a year to compete. Same system we played under when we had losing seasons.

Absolutely correct. It's been the same throughout the good years and the bad years. I myself was a tuition student who was zoned for Heritage and I can tell you this is the current policy and always has been.

That being said not all the tuition students are "recruits" as some would like to believe. I was never recruited at all and I don't think I know anyone who was. I transferred in in 8th grade because my dad and his two brothers all played at Alcoa and I didn't want to go to a school with a large population, not because someone came to my house and asked me to.

That being said I'd like to once again congratulate them Tornadoes, keep it goin Class of 2010.

Yes , someone tranfering into the school system that does not live within the city limits has to wait for a year to recieve their eligibility to play from TSSAA. As for the private school student , they still have to be cleared by TSSAA, but it may take a shorter amount of time , im not sure about that one. You can find the rules for eligibility on tssaa.org

    • For perspective the county school I’m associated and graduated from only has 7,600 people in the entire county with a median age of roughly 47. That’s not very many 14-18 year olds to choose from. I think the football team had 25-28 kids or around there.  On the other hand Shelby County has 916,000+ with a median age of 36. This isn’t just about Shelby county, but all the big ones with huge economic advantages!  An urban/rural split would benefit tons of smaller schools that have to compete with county’s with 120x the amount of people. Especially the ones who can pick and choose their players from a pool like that!   I also agree with Pujo about charter and magnets and they will eventually be phased into the private divisions because it is obviously an advantage plus all the funding! Add that county schools can’t go recruit outside of their county like charters and magnets!
    • They should be starting next week and go from there.  They never do Spring Practice in April
    • It will be interesting to see if the Warren County School District allows this to go before a jury or they settle out of court before going to trial.  My guess is that this case never goes to trial.  If this goes before a jury, they could award even more than the $750K.  I was on a jury where they were asking for 185K and were awarded 1.2 million.  You never know what will happen in that jury room.
