Sikeston,MO @ Obion Co. Central

Recommended Posts

The best thing about the Fulton County game is that it's over....It had about everything...Two lightening delays, the last one eventually caused the end to the contest after only a half..It had a young man for FC hauled off in an ambulance (don't know what happened to him)...Whatever it was, it happened after he had gotten back to the sidelines..Could've been heat related..It was sooooo humid last night...BTW...

Praying for that young man's speedy recovery...Saw enough penalties to last the rest of the year....Both sides were having their problems with that...The first quarter alone lasted a little over an hour...

OC has some speed this year...This is not a typical Central team...LeDevin Fair is a fine back...He has very good speed but better yet he has great vision and is very elusive...Big breakaway threat....The Rebels have a good QB with a strong and accurate arm...He was 9 of 10 last night for around 80 yards...He just barely missed a 10 for 10 with an incompletion just off the finger tips of one of his receivers in the endzone..Speaking of receivers, the Rebels go about 6-8 deep in that department..All have good hands and know what to do with the ball after they catch it..The line did a fine job of giving Phipps time to throw...

The defense did pretty good especially for the amount of time they were on the field...Did I mention it was hot ??..They got a little bit fatigued by trying to defend a very herky-jerky Fulton Co offense..The defense was on the field longer than it wanted because of silly penalties for one thing...Going to HAVE to cut out the undisciplined mistakes on that side of the ball...Steven Patton had two INTs and Jaquis Williams had another that he took to the house but was brought back due to a block in the back....

The special teams were a very bright spot last night...Ward did a fine job of kicking off and was 5 for 5 on his PATs...Fair had a punt return for a TD and Justin Wiles returned a kick-off 85 yards for another TD...

The Sikeston Bulldogs will bring a MUCH better team into Troy on Friday night...They ended their season in the 4A state semi-finals with a 13-1 record...It was the best season in their history...They did lose a number of seniors but return a boatload of athletes...May be the best collection of athletes the Rebels will see this season...Their coach,Kent Gibbs and the Rebel coach Shawn Jackson are friends from Jackson's time in Missouri...This game was scheduled after the bad experience the Rebels had in dealing with Byhalia, Ms's coaching staff last season...The Bulldogs are preseason 7th in 4A in Missouri but it is the general contention of most people in SE Missouri that they have one of the top two or three teams (all classifications)in that area of the state....

Very anxious to see this game....Going with the Rebels to pull off what most will feel a bit of an upset....

The flow of this game will be so much better....The Rebs will have to cut down on the penalties in order to win...which I think they do....Look for Fair and Phipps to have a big game....Need to have a big game by the receivers...I think the Rebels win this one 35-24...

GO REBELS!!

OC won one of the strangest games I have called in 20 years of radio. The first quarter lasted over an hour, and then the lighting delay, or should I say two. Penalties were really about the only problem for OC.

Now...this week, Sikeston brings a very good team to Troy this Friday night. This will be, as Coach Jackson said a good early test for the Rebs. Phipps was SOLID for OC, and his large group of Receivers are all able to make a play. Fair is the real deal. He showed good speed, and I think even better vision. This year's version of Rebels looks to be a FUN team to watch, and even better, appears to EXPECT to win, every time they take the field. Coach Jackson and his staff have done an amazing job of getting things turned around at OC. Next step.....Sikeston. Looking for a 2-0 start!

GO REBLES!!!!!!!

Sikeston will be a very tough test for Obion County. I saw them play last year in the playoffs and they were very athletic and fast. The Bulldogs do return their starting QB from last year; his last name is Wiggins. He is a very good QB so be ready.

Their starting QB is a kid named Trey Lewis #9...He is senior who played receiver last season...He is a real good track athlete...He is the Missouri state champion in the long jump and 2nd place in the triple jump...

Juqualin Wiggins graduated last year...He was a record-breaking QB...He passed for 1,509 yards and completed 68% of his passes both first in Sikeston history...He tied the record for TD passes at the school with 16...He was the first Bulldog QB to rush for 1,000 yards and was also the first QB to rush and pass for over 1,000 yards...

Well, from the sound and looks of things, this will be one of many test the Rebels have coming in the next several weeks.

The down side is last weeks game against Fulton County was a waste. There was nothing that was proven on either side of the ball. To many varibles that affected the game. The Rebels should be good, Fair giving them a new twist. On the other hand, can the Rebels stop the other team ? From the reports of several at the game from the Rebel fans, the defense even looked subject against a team like Fulton County. The Rebels should end up 6 and 4. They could end up 5 and 5 or 7 and 3 also. I don't see more than 7 wins for sure. Sikeston, Crocket Co, Union City, Westview will be the toughest of test for the Rebs. They should win their games against *Fulton Co. , Cape Central, Covington, Gibson Co. Dyersburg and Ripley being the toss up teams. Good Luck Rebels. If the passing game gets in the flow and other defenses are held at bay, with Fair in the Mix, the Rebels should be heading back to the playoffs once again. The fun of Football has now been brought back to Rebel Country and it is great to know the hard works young folks put in each and everyday has the likelyhood of paying off each Friday night the team steps on the field.

I'm not surprised by this poll and where Sikeston is ranked. Kearney won it all last year and Helias was runner-up. SEMO is at the bottom of the list when it comes to high school football and I think it's always been that way.

You're right, Juqualin Wiggins did graduate last year. I could have sworn someone told me he was a junior last year.

Obion Central's comeback effort fell just short tonight in Troy...The Rebels fought back from a 35-12 early third quarter deficit to cut the lead down to 42-34 with just over three minutes to play in the game...The big blow in this game came right before half as Sikeston, leading 20-12 at the time, scored on a 70 yard run with just 6 seconds remaining...That pushed the lead up to 28-12 and then the Rebels turned the ball over on the 2nd play of the second half and Sikeston converted the mistake into 7 more points to jump out 35-12...Most other Rebel teams of the past would have folded up their tents and phoned in the rest of the game...Not this bunch...They fought back and made a game of it....

Sikeston is a very good team..I doubt very seriously that the Rebels will see a team this year with more athletes...All of their backs and receivers were breakaway threats...They run what looked to me like the "pistol" offense used by Nevada...The QB Lewis can hurt you with his legs and his arm...They are very well coached...They didn't turn the ball over...They had a few penalties but that is expected in a season opening game....

OC's defense needs a ton of work...They missed tackles, took wrong angles, didn't play assignment football and didn't wrap up..Sikeston's offense torched them for nearly 600 yards all totaled...

OC's pass offense is very good at this early stage of the season..Trey Phipps had a real good game..The receivers, Nathan Ward,Tanner Cary,Mason McGrew and Shawn Weaks all had good games...RB LeDevin Fair also had some nice grabs...Phipps had probably 320-340 yards passing...Shawn Weaks also had about a 40 yard pass completion to Nathan Ward...The line didn't allow a sack...

The Rebels run offense never materialized tonight...Sikeston had a swarming defense and was very fast to the ball...Fair had a couple 10-12 yard runs but only had close to 50 yards rushing...

The TD right before the half and the fact the Rebels had two turnovers while Sikeston had none were the deciding factors in a very entertaining game...

The Rebs don't get any time to sulk...They have Crockett County coming in next Friday night...

Congrats and good luck to Sikeston the rest of the way...
