That has been my experiance . i hate going to Memphis schools because im afraid that one of our kids could get shot. Not that this is the schools fault but... Its still something Im concerned about to say the least. Im not the only one either. i have talked to caoches that have said they were afraid to win because of the reactions from the crowds. By the way 4 of The Greenfield bus tires were slashed and one blew out on the way home . THP confirmed tampering To think that 60 ball players lives were at stake is terifying. So the question is who slashed the tires? I dont think it was anyone from Greenfield.

You have GOT to be kidding. You are making Memphis sound like a city full of nothing but thugs and crackheads. Why is it that whenever 2 city schools very similar to Trezevant play each other, there are no gunshots? Stop blowing things out of proportion and trying to make every Memphis team look like this disgraceful Trezevant team.

The sewer system of Tennessee ( Memphis ) will not address this behavior, it's not politically correct. It's their culture and goes along with everything else in that city. BTW, the T$$AA will not do anything either.

How about you stop attacking our city and talkin all this mess about us because of one team? Yeah, there are some bad areas, but that can be said for any city. Especially one as large as Memphis. Nashville and Knoxville have the same bad areas.

TREZEVANT DOES NOT REPRESENT THE ENTIRE CITY OF MEMPHIS!!

BigSwo, I've never had a problem with your post, however I disagree with things you've said on this topic alone. If you're so terrified to go into inner city schools and watch your team play, DON'T GO!

Gibson Co. went down to Melrose back in the late 90's for a playoff game back when Melrose had Cedric Wilson. I'm not racist and not meaning this in a racist way at all as I'm white.....but Gibson Co. was mostly white and we headed into Orange Mound/Melrose for the game with no problems at all. We did have police escort in and out of the stadium, but other than that it was a cold Friday night playoff football game. I've gone down to basketball games for the past several years and watched games at Memphis Central, White Station, Booker T. Washington etc. and never had problems at those schools either. Just go about your own business and you won't get caught up in all the extra stuff.

We've played BT Washington a few times (always at our place), and, from what I've heard, the coaches and kids (for the most part) have been nothing but courteous and respectable. Even when they knew there was no way they were going to win, they did it for their football program.

So, I'm not buying that every Memphis school is like that. I have never seen such a display of lack of discipline or unsportsmanlike conduct during a high school football game. And, PBS didn't help any by keeping the camera on their qb.

Before you fine folks from Memphis get offended by what I say, let me remind you that prior to Saturday, many Greenevillians had never had any contact with Memphis...most have never been farther west than Nashville and some have never left NET. The only thing we can base an opinion on is the behavior of the Trezevant players and coaching staff. I read some of the pre-game press in the Commercial Appeal and knew coming in this team had a collassal chip on its collective shoulder and wanted desperately to be noticed by its home town...mission accomplished. Famous or infamous gets the same attention. Theyshould have been receiving the recognition they deserved all season, instead of settling for street cred. What kind of send-off did these kids receive from their fans? Did other area schools turn out to wish them luck? Whether you like it or not, when the game is broadcast statewide to thousands of homes, this Trezevant team represented not only Memphis but West Tennessee. Those boys worked very hard in unbelievably bad conditions to get to Cookeville for a couple-hundred fans to show up and watch them...gosh how big is Memphis? I bet if every football coach in the city came to support that team they would have had that many more. Tiny little Greeneville had 5000 fans who made the 3 hour trip over the mountain in threatening weather to watch our boys.In a town where nearly 12% of the population is unemployed, that was impressive. I bet the Bears felt out-manned the second they took the field. I was nearly as proud of what we accomplished off the field as the twelfth man as I was of our guys. And now that its over, when these kids need someone to lift them up, Memphis is once again seperating themselves from Trezevant like some cancer that just needs to be cut out. Maybe its time to wake up and realize that what happened in that game on Saturday is a symptom, not the disease.

I hate to inform you of this but... People outside of Memphis are gonna look at this the same way. Any team that has to go into inner memphis and play one of your teams is afraid that if they win, Especially big. That they will have to fight thier way out. Ive been with 3 teams myself and every time its the same. This time it was televised for all to see. When Memphis teams travel they carry a load of thugs with them who show complete disrespect for the opposing teams fans at gathering places like the restroom and concession stands. Talking loud using very foul language and daring anyone to say anything. Memphis has well earned this rep and will keep it. Just ask around west TN and you will hear the same. No one wants to go to Memphis to play sports.

Im clarifying my posts on this thread. Its simply what I have personally experienced. I would name the 2 schools where these incidents took place but that would only bring out more of the same "Dont say that about US". I will apologize for making it appear that I was lumping everyone together. That was not my intention. Shudda just left it alone. But after watching the game on Saturday and seeing what everyone saw and then reading about the bus tires I got a lil over heated on this subject. So I will say it now ... Not all Memphis schools are the same. Trezevant is a bad seed in the community and has a lawless type behavior. To all the other schools all of which are mentioned on this thread you have a great reputation. My apologies to you.

Playing in Memphis is different, whether you agree or not....

My experiences:

late 1989-1990 played at Trezevant, big black spot in on the 50 yard line, was told by a police officer (who knows if it was the truth, but it was a police officer that said this) that night that a car got burned on the field the week prior, and the concession stand got robbed twice last weekend.

1995: Substate at Harding (girls basketball) no issues at all and got a close win and even cut down their nets

1997: Substate at Melrose (boys basketball)..tight game that Melrose won, liquor bottles were obvious, with a smell of some left handed cigarettes in the air.

2001, 2002, 2003: substate at Jerry Lawler's house (mid south coliseum), no issues other than the place looked like it might fall in.

2008 at Booker T Wash, no issues other than a poker game was being played in the open endzone, was kinda hoping to get to play, but was too nervous to ask, as that is not what you expect at a substate game, or even a 3rd grade game.

2008 football at Melrose: great atmosphere for a football game!!!!

All this is said to say that each individual school has a climate all of their own. Yes, Memphis has its issues, but so does everyone. Trezevant acted like thugs, but that is not the way it is everywhere, and this is coming from a person who does not care for Memphis at all, but each school climate is different.

    • RR, you might remember. Didn’t someone hide the kicking shoe that game? It seems I remember we had missed a kick the week before, and we needed all the points we could get. We thought we had a better chance going for two, so $?&@$ hid the shoe after the first miss that game. No one on our sideline looked for it very hard.
    • I will never forget the 1983 Heritage vs Maryville game. I remember driving home and listening to WGAP. Can't remember the announcers name. He asked Coach Story why he kept going for 2? Story told him " Why didn't you ask Renfro that last year"
    • TSSAA will let them all go to Mase.
    • Well nothing new, the Mustangs are really talented again this coming season!  They very well could go undefeated in regular season.  We shall see what happens in postseason.  I think the path to state title game is a little clearer than years past.  I think the Stangs are going to be really good and I think the traditional teams around in 2A are not going to be as strong.  It should be a fun season!
