there shouldnt be a shot clock in HS ball. The young people are just learning the fundamentals of the game. Colleges might wish there was a shot clock to prepare them for college, but alot of these kids will never see a college court.

What fundamentals does stalling teach? The shot clock does reward good defense. You will see more upsets with shot clock than without it!

There is a gym in Monterey, TN, named after their former coach that use to do it all the time 30 years ago.

There's 2 teams on the floor and one of them can shoot as often as they want to if the other one is in the stall. It takes alot of discipline to go into a stall and not get lulled to sleep and you don't get glamour points for breaking 80. Whatever it takes to survive and advance.

 

I loved to watch Don DeVoe get to the 4 minute mark in a close game. He'd turn you over by setting up a guy to take a charge, get ahead at the free throw line and make you foul him again. There's strategy in that.

I've seen a game like this in the state tournament (semifinal round). I think it was Ridgeway vs. David Lipscomb in Class AA. It's happened before but I'm not a big fan of it. Playing stall ball just because you can't play up tempo is not a good coaching strategy. And neither is letting the opponent impose "stall ball" on you. And this game went into OT, I would want my money back also.

Some real funny posts on this topic!! I sure feel sorry for the radio play by play guys in this game. How long did the game take to play, 45 minutes? Wasn't any need for timeouts or even a halftime. But I would like to see a shot clock in high school ball. It would be hard for every school to do it, but like the guy said earlier, have it in the gyms that can do it and in every tournament gym.

What was White House's chances of going to OT and losing by 1? I sure as heck wouldn't blame White House. That's like blaming the pitcher for throwing a no-hitter. They did what they had to do to stay in the game. Isn't that the coaches job? Identify the best shot to survive and advance and coach to that?

 

Blame East Lit. They could have shot 3 pointers all night long and played D. They were willing participants in White House's stall it seems to me.

 

Defense still wins championships at every level. True a shot clock makes you only have to play it in short spurts but that's to keep the fans in the gymnasium and to thwart the guy that can beat you 14-13. You still have to play D and play it well to win championships.
