Siegel played Ooltewah this evening befor a fine crowd. This matchup was very similiar to a matchup that was held in the same arena with the only difference being the players and one of the Coaches. The Coach from Ooltewah was the same and the Coach at Siegel is Ann Mullins. The earlier matchup 5 years ago is still being talked about as to the play and intensity and some of the same officals officiating then still make their way to the Nations arena and sit down with some of the sisters who play now of those who played then. There is three-Two generation player on theis squad and three 3rd generation players playing on this current squad this year. Just to make it to the State three years in a row is a record for the current group.

This matchup went 4 games and lasted over 90 minutes and points lasted forever with great play on both sides. This was more than a regular match between two great schools, this is the match that could have happened at the end of the first day which happened two years ago when these two played till 1:00 in the morning of that State Tournament. Both schools played as if there was no tomorrow last night in the typical, Ooltewah/Siegel fashion and both knew what was in store for them when they walked in the gym. Siegel out willed Ooltewah. And for 90 minutes it was outstanding volleyball. And now Siegel is in the State the third year in a row and the Sister of up to 3 generations af three generations of players can say I did it too.

Stats of this match will come from another direction but all that matters now, they earned a Chance and now they have a chance to see what they can do in the State.

MURFREESBORO — It wasn't a typical regular season for Siegel's volleyball team.

However, the postseason has gotten back to normal for the Lady Stars.

Siegel defeated Ooltewah 3-1, winning 25-21, 23-25, 25-20, 25-18 Thursday night in a Class AAA sectional to reach its third consecutive state tournament.

"You don't realize until you are a senior how much it means to go to state," said Addison Rogers, one of four seniors on this year's team. "We've been working so hard this season. We really struggled early this year. But to come out the way we played (in the postseason) is just an amazing feeling."

The TSSAA state tournament tips off Wednesday at three locations — Blackman High, MTSU and Siegel High. The tournament is a double-elimination format. All of Wednesday's Class AAA matches will be held at MTSU's Murphy Center.

Siegel (34-16) improved to 5-0 in postseason play, winning both the District 7-AAA tournament and Region 4-AAA tournament.

Siegel's 16 losses are the most in the three-year run. But few care now about the regular season.

"We've had our little spurts throughout the year," Siegel senior Caroline Gay said. "We had spots where everything started clicking and we were like, 'Yes, we can finally do it.'

"Then it would go back to square one."

Siegel, which improved to 6-0 in home sectional matches, withstood a strong Ooltewah surge in Game 3. The Lady Stars led 17-9 before Ooltewah came back to tie it 18-18.

"I don't know what happened to us," Siegel third-year coach Ann Mullins said. "We just took some time off. I called a timeout in between that run and told them to settle down and we go back out and get aced.

"When you are 1-1, that third set is crucial."

Three straight Ooltewah errors gave Siegel a 21-18 lead. After a Lady Owl sideout, Rogers and Carlton Gay hit back-to-back kills to push it to 23-19. Carlton Gay won the game with a kill.

And Ooltewah never recovered.

Libero Becca Cutter served four straight points to help Siegel snag a 17-13 lead — the last three coming on Ooltewah errors.

Carlton Gay closed out the match serving the final four points. Siegel won the match on Maggie Smith's kill.

Smith led the Lady Stars with 17 kills. Carlton Gay had 12 kills and 15 digs. Cutter recorded 24 digs and three aces. Trevecca signee Caroline Gay had 33 assists, and Alexa Faulkner had three blocks.

Siegel finished second in District 7-AAA in the regular season to Riverdale. But the Lady Stars awoke in postseason play.

"I think we all lost a little bit of faith at the beginning of the (regular) season," Smith said. "But we've been working so well together as a team lately.

"We have so much faith in ourselves and the whole program."

•Soddy-Daisy ended Riverdale's season with a 3-1 win in their Class AAA sectional at Soddy-Daisy. It marked the second straight year Soddy-Daisy (50-9) has beaten Riverdale in a sectional. Riverdale finished the season 40-16.

Soddy Daisy, Sale Creek Headed To State Volleyball

Ooltewah, Boyd-Buchanan Eliminated On The Road

by Special To The Chattanoogan.com

posted October 21, 2011

The home court was much more kind to Chattanooga volleyball teams than those on the road Thursday night in the Sectional round of the season.

The Soddy Daisy Lady Trojans won their 50th match with a 3-1 victory over Riverdale while the Sale Creek Lady Panthers won another big match by defeating Watertown, 3-0.

Both advanced to the state tournament, which begins Wednesday in Murfreesboro.

Road trips were not kind to Boyd-Buchanan and Ooltewah.

The Lady Bucs lost 3-0 to Friendship Christian while the Lady Owls came out on the short end of the 3-1 match at Murfreesboro Siegel.

Soddy Daisy is now 50-9 after its 25-23, 25-12, 19-25 and 25-22 win over the Lady Warriors.

Region tournament MVP Sarah Davis was one of the stars for Soddy Daisy as she had 10 straight service points to start the second set.

And then with her team trailing 14-9 in set four, she reeled off eight straight service points.

She also had 22 digs and included a half-dozen aces in those service points.

Kelsey Nunley and Rachel Shaughnessy led the Soddy Daisy hitters with 20 and 17 kills, respectively.

Olivia Holden was also credited with 46 assists.

"We'll take it," said a happy Soddy Daisy coach Lorri Johnson.

"Our passing was much better tonight and we served well too as we had quite a few aces.

"I hope we'll be more prepared for state this year, but we have to get back to work tomorrow to get started," she added.

At Sale Creek, the Lady Panthers had another spirited crowd and they were rewarded as their team won, 25-23, 25-18 and 25-13 over Watertown.

Sale Creek was down 11-1 in the first set, but coach Debbie Hill didn't panic and neither did her team.

Erin Hill was the leader for the Lady Panthers with 23 kills, 16 assists, eight digs, two aces and two blocks.

Megan Storey followed with 20 assists, six kills and six digs while Chelsi Roark added 15 digs, eight kills, three aces and a block.

"We were down 11-1 early, but I knew we'd be okay once we got our feet under us," Hill explained.

"We didn't lose our cool as we played pretty well after that bad start. We had another great crowd as it was loud the entire time," the coach added, her team now 47-12.

Boyd-Buchanan, which finished as runner-up to Sale Creek in Region 3-A, ran into a tough Friendship Christian team and lost 3-0 by scores of 25-15, 25-13 and 25-19.

Jessica Kirk had 10 digs, eight kills and two aces while Katie Delay had a dozen digs.

Kristen Reynolds had 16 assists.

"We played hard and fought back the entire match, but they were really good and they had one girl who was totally unstoppable," explained Lady Buc coach Ashley Scott.

"I'm sure we just lost to the eventual state champs as they were really good. I'm really proud of my girls as they played their hearts out," Scott added.

Ooltewah's season ends at 40-17 after a 25-21, 23-25, 25-20 and 25-18 loss to Siegel.

Leondra Barrett had 15 kills for the Lady Owls while Loren Bennett had 20 assists and Izabela Zdunek 13 digs.

Senior Kianna Delaney added 13 kills, 15 digs, five blocks and two aces for the Lady Owls.

"We played well in the second game, but we just missed too many serves. We missed 11 and you can't do that and expect to win," said Ooltewah coach Elaine Peigen later.

"We played well in the third and fourth sets, but we just couldn't finish. We gave it all we had and that's all I can ask," Peigen added.

LEBANON — Independence took a familiar path to the state volleyball tournament on Thursday.

The Lady Eagles beat Wilson Central in a Class AAA sectional for the third straight year with a 25-9, 25-10, 25-7 win, giving Independence Coach Kathy Slaughter just what she wanted on her 41st birthday.

“Around this time every year everybody asks, ‘What do I want for my birthday?’ and it’s always a trip back to the state,†Slaughter said. “I’ve not made it on my birthday, too, so this is a great win and a great group of girls who have just worked their tails off all season.â€

Independence (34-12) will play its first-round state game Wednesday in Murfreesboro.

Setter Paige Murphy led the way with 39 assists, 15 digs and nine blocked shots. MTSU commitment Brianna McCombs anchored the defense with 30 digs.

The Lady Eagles earned their fourth consecutive state tournament appearance and hope to add to their 2008 title.

“Our defense is always our strongest aspect,†Murphy said. “We have the best defender in the state — Bri McCombs. She never lets anything drop.â€

Independence’s Kennedie Lariscy added 18 digs, and middle hitter Madi Mayfield blocked 14 shots. The Lady Eagles set the tone early, taking a 9-1 lead in the first game.

“I don’t know why we can’t beat them,†said Wildcats libero Kendall Roberts, who had 14 digs. “Williamson County schools, you think of them and you think they’re awesome in sports. I guess that gets in our heads, thinking that we’re up against them.â€

Hannah Hinson led Wilson Central (39-16) with 11 assists, and Kristin Cook had a team-high eight kills.

“I’d rather face Independence than (defending Class AAA champion) Ravenwood,†Wildcats Coach Tammy Serbin said. “Williamson County is very strong. Wilson County is trying to catch up, but we’re not there yet. They don’t make a whole lot of mistakes.â€

It was the fifth sectional for Wilson Central, which has never made the state tournament.

KINGSPORT — Appearing in the state volleyball tournament has become a ritual for Sullivan South.

The Lady Rebels (47-8) will make their annual pilgrimage to Murfreesboro next week, hoping to unseat defending champion Ravenwood.

South defeated Hardin Valley Academy on Thursday night 25-16, 25-12, 25-19 to win their Class AAA sectional in a breeze.

The Rebels have made 20 or so trips to state. They won TSSAA championships in 1984, 1995 and 1996.

In postseason play — district, region and sectional — South has not lost a single game this year.

“I hope we can go down there and compete,†coach Wendy Ratliff said. “We need to continue to play as a team. We were clicking tonight, and it’s a good time to be clicking.

“We’re playing to our potential but we’re not perfect. There are always things you can tweak.â€

Collierville advances to state volleyball tournament

Win over Bartlett seals berth; Houston also in

By John Varlas

With the volleyball season rapidly coming to an end, the Collierville Dragons find themselves in a most familiar -- and most pleasant -- position: Packing their bags for a trip to Murfreesboro.

Collierville earned its fourth straight trip to the AAA state tournament and eighth in the last nine years by beating host Bartlett, 25-18, 25-12, 25-18, Thursday night.

Collierville will be joined at next week's tournament by Houston, which eliminated Munford, 25-11, 25-15, 25-19.

"I'm very happy we're going four years in a row," said Collierville senior standout Hailey Kerr. "It would have been bad to go three years in a row and miss out (senior year)."

Kerr, who finished with 11 kills, thee blocks and eight digs, had a big block at the net to give Collierville the victory in the first set. Bartlett played the Dragons on even terms and the score was tied at 18-18 before the Dragons scored the last seven points.

The second set was all Collierville and while Bartlett battled gamely in the third, the Dragons were just too much.

"We had some mishaps against Houston (in Tuesday's Region 8 finals loss)," said Dragons senior McKenzie Carlson. "We played so much better (Thursday). We were all pumped, wanting to go back to state.

"I think we have a wonderful chance if we just keep playing with passion."

The loss ended an emotional ride for the Panthers, whose coach, Sherrie Walker, was diagnosed with breast cancer on March 2 before returning to lead the team to within a game of the state tournament.

After the match, the Bartlett fans showed their appreciation gave a standing ovation to their coach and team.

"We've had an awesome season, a lot more ups than downs," Walker said. "This loss is disappointing; we wouldn't be normal if it wasn't disappointing.

"As a coach, when the year ends you can always second-guess yourself ... but I'm sure I'll feel very satisfied and the team will too."

Said Dragons coach Lisa Lewis, "It's been an emotional time for them, but she's a great coach and they have a great team."

At Houston, the Mustangs finally had a home sectional match thanks to Tuesday's victory over Collierville and coach Becky Pendleton said her team benefited from that greatly.

Houston is now 13-1 in home matches this season and 50-5 since 2007.

"Homecourt advantage is bigger than people think," said Pendleton, whose team lost to Munford in a sectional match last year.

"It's not just the fans, it's being in familiar surroundings. It's a tough match every time we play (Munford). We're very happy."

Justin Fee/special to the News Sentinel Farragut's Paige West, right, spikes the ball against Morristown West during a Class AAA state sectional match on Thursday at Farragut High School.

Victory did not come easily for Farragut High School's volleyball team Thursday in a Class AAA sectional game against Morristown West, but the celebration certainly did.

"It feels amazing," said senior setter Kayla Hartman after she and her teammates spontaneously embraced in joy on their home court following a rugged three-set sweep over the Lady Trojans. "It's the best feeling in the world."

Farragut coach Susan Davidson did not feel too badly, either, even though she kept her celebration more subdued.

"It's a great feeling," she said. "I'm just happy for the kids. To me it's all about the kids."

With the win, Hartman and fellow seniors Julia Alves, Shannon Bohnenberger, Meghan Glintenkamp, Kendall Knisley and Paige West will also get to enjoy the feeling of returning to the state for the first time since their freshmen year.

Getting there took a little more effort than in a typical sweep, though, despite the fact that Farragut (52-4) appeared quite focused at the start and built a big first set lead. However, the Lady Admirals had trouble getting the final point, and Morristown West battled back to lose by only 25-19.

While Morristown West (32-9) did not gain the first set victory, the Lady Trojans certainly gained plenty of confidence in the second set, as they built a 14-8 lead before Farragut battled back to win 25-23 in what may have been the most pivotal stretch of the match.

"I thought the second was huge for us," said Davidson. "Our setter, Kayla Hartman did a great job."

The third set was also very competitive, as Morristown West — which looked very comparable to Farragut in ability — refused to quit. In fact, the Lady Trojans appeared to tie the set 22-22 before the officials eventually gave the point to Farragut after conferring.

As a result, Farragut had a 23-21 lead and was able to clinch, 25-22.

"That was a big momentum change in that third game," said Morristown West coach Heather Kelley. "Regardless of that, we didn't make the plays at the end when we needed

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Well Faragutt fans, its obvious you got out your brooms and last nights match got you to the BIG DANCE in the Boro. A lot of Congrats for a lot of work to Coach, players, students and parents and fans. See you in the Boro. PH

Coach Tracey Berry called it a "pretty solid performance by the girls." Sophomore Kat Hutson led all hitters with 22 kills, 2 blocks and 1 ace. MTSU recruit Alyssa Ivey had 41 assists and add 1 ace.

"The girls are excited about the opportunity to go back to Murfreesboro," Berry said.

RHS will now play in the double-elimination TSSAA state championships next Wednesday-Friday, Oct. 26-28, in Murfreesboro. Class AAA matches will take place at Middle Tennessee State University on Wednesday, at Blackman High on Thursday, and at MTSU for the 6 p.m. Friday final.

The Ravenwood squad is now awaiting the TSSAA to post the tourney brackets.
