EK Slaughter out at Cleveland

Recommended Posts

Bradley County will build a third high school and middle school before the City of Cleveland will even consider a 2nd high school. While things are growing, the residential growth is in the county, not the city. Even with substantial future annexation looming in the horizon, there is still lots of room at the high school (to absorb future growth).

I agree that most of the growth has been in the county but they are already planning to annex quite a bit of area and the population on the south side of the county and city is increasing, alot of the minority growth( hispanic) or most of it is within the city boundaries now, just because thier is lots of room at the high school now means little the first yr Walker Valley was open they had plenty of room also 2 yrs later they were approaching capacity and now they are just about out of room, now Bchs still has room with alot of students ( not atheletes) on the north end going to Walker. Cleveland / Bradley county is growing and will overspill into boarder areas of Meigs, McMinn and Polk in the next 10-20 yrs. they are talking about a 3rd middle school on the north end now, going to be interesting to see how the zoning is changed for all the high schools.

The City of Cleveland is very unlikely to build another HS in the forseeable future. And the areas to be annexed and have been annexed so far have very few school age children involved. The city does not want to annex lot's of areas with kids just for that reason. What you will see them annexing is commercial and industrial areas, and avoiding the residential areas, which would force them to build more classroom space.

Since the City School System is completely seperate from the Bradley County system which has two high schools now, the city students will continue to attend CHS, although they can attend either county school if they so wish, providing their own transportation and abiding by any transfer rules.

County students that want to attend Cleveland High must pay a tuition, and provide their transportation.

The biggest thing I see is the zoning rules becoming more entrenched as the schools fill up, because the county commission is not going to spring for a new high school anytime soon, so the available class space will need to be used first. Therefore you will more likely have to go where the space is first in the county.

And with the recent decision by the TSSAA on the Signal Mountain case, look for this area to be under far more scrutiny.

They are either forming a team or have a team to look at future annex (5-10 yr plan). Mostly as you say because of commercial needs and tax purpose but that almost with out fail leads to suburban annexation and The fringe areas of the city on the south side where the county meets now are all heavily populated. They will be out of room at the high school alot sooner than you think, I heard at a soccr game last year that some people want a new middle school for the city as well. All depends on how much influence they have.

The suburban fringe neighborhoods don't meet city code and will need to be brought into compliance before annexation (septic system switch to sewer, road width, fire hydrants etc). For numerous reason which all lead to high cost, the city is not looking at bringing in housing. Vacant lands for commercial purpose is the main thrust behind annexation. When a second middle school is built (currently projected at 10 years down the road), both middle schools will start hosting 9th graders, freeing up space for 350-400 more students at the recently expanded high school. There is still more room for expansion at the existing high school, plus adjacent lands available from M&M.

They are thinking about a new middle school, but not a high school any time soon. Actually another elementary school is on tap too.

If you look at the annexation patterns you will find the residential areas have been avoided for quite a while. And for the forseeable future, the only residential developments that will come into the city are those developed on currently vacant land.

Influence has less to do with it than money to pay for infrastructure.

Actually by law, a city has 7 years to put in the infrastructure that brings the annexed areas up code, afer the annexation is voted in. That is one reason that they will likely only annex areas were the County spent the time an effort and money to get those in place first.

East Cleveland has the same city limits line that was in place in the early 60's....because the city does not want to deal the infrastructure needs; schools police and fire that annexation of that area would entail.

if Cleveland really wants a coach who can get the Raiders to the elite, they need a guy who knows how to win, one who can motivate, makes kids better, and one who would be a step up.... their first call should be to Coach Jackson at Brainerd, what he has done this year with that group is amazing, he won a state championship as a player in georgia, and it would be a step up! What a great hire he would be, but Cleveland will probably bring some old name in that will do the same old thing and go 6-4

Saw Brainard in a summer scrimmage. It is absoluely remarkable the job Coach Jackson has done at Brainard. Limited resources and low numbers but still in round 2. If I had a vote for Coach of the Year- He would be it!

There are places within the city limits right now that don't meet code, if the people who want a new school get thier way the it won't matter in Cleveland / Bradley county nothing is taken at face value. 10 years no way it will have to be sooner, the hispanic population alone will grow before then to force something to be done, they even looked at aquiring the old hall's chevrolet dealership before easy auto bought it, there are 2 different groups just like in the county system, some don't want the change some do, it will come down to who has more influence and the cost will not play that big a role there are ways around that also, M&M already owns part of the land that Cleveland high uses and may or may not let the city have more, they just agreed to let them expand the greenway, but anything futher will have to go through corporate in new jersey, I would imagine. the new wing is nice at the high school but I've been inside and to house that many more kids it will be a stretch.
