He single handedly set SC program back 10 years...worst in SC history. He had some great one liners. He was a great guy though.

On one trip the team stopped to eat and Mayfield went over his kickoff coverage in the parking lot of the restaurant for the first time - needless to say, the opponent ran the kickoff back for TD. SC could write a book on "how not to coach".

Added note: He was killed in a car accident - he was on Cannon County's School Board of Education.

I could tell you countless stories. I stole "we are small but we are slow" from him...lol.

I was very sad to hear that. He was a good man.

So, I was in Woodbury last weekend for the jr. pro jamboree, and I'll give some thoughts on the state of CC football.

First, it's not a football community.

The citizens, for the most part, could care less about football.

It's shows that there is no more investment in the facilities. One toilet for men and one toilet for women in the whole stadium is ridiculous.

The weight room is a joke. There were hardly any weights in there and it's small. I don't see how it can accommodate a complete 3A squad.

And, the Jr. pro program was talked about earlier. I've seen them in action the last few years.

They've had athletes, but more times than not, they've not been very well coached.

It goes back to not being a football community.

The way I see it, if it isn't basketball, people could care less, and it shows in the pee wee leagues.

A good jr. pro program will help a high school program.

The 8-9 year old coaches yelling at the players was mentioned and that causing the numbers to be down for the bigger team.

I say baloney.

I've seen other teams coaches yell more and they have 40 players and a competitive team.

It goes back again to the culture.

If they don't really care about football, they're not going to stick with it when it gets tough.

    • Honestly the A.D. may be powerless at Maryville to some degree versus other schools. I know he has his hands full with GoFan and all the stupid surprises just from the emails he sends out during the season.
    • Harriman was better than what I anticipated. They had good skill guys and a QB that’s gonna make a lot of teams look silly. They had some silly pre snap penalties but it’s just spring and I guess that’s expected.    Oneida looks the part. They are big upfront and got a stable of backs that’s gonna carry them this year. They have a few playmakers at receiver also. They have a new receiver that has only played basketball till this year and he is very athletic. The question is can we find a QB to consistently get them the ball. They played 2-3 kids there and none looked great but they didn’t look awful either. The  defense is gonna be tough again but it’s very early and a lot can change between now and the fall.     It was good just to get out and watch some ball. I don’t know if Oneida has the team to win the region this year but just what I saw tonight I think they may be in the conversation come November.
