Getting 6th grade added was a huge step forward.

BD...Metro Public Schools are their own worst enemy and have been for many years.  Adding the 75 # weight classification would be a good start.  Another thing to do is change the rules to where MNPS are allowed to wrestle in tournaments and dual matches against the stronger club programs.  You only get better if you wrestle against the very best competition.  Just look at what Bradley, Baylor, Father Ryan & Cleveland have been doing with their middle school programs.  They are often club teams that travel the country seeking out the very best talent.  Other programs have taken notice and it will not take them long to catch up if they continue to work hard.  The last thing that should be done is for middle school wrestling to begin in the 5th grade and not wait until the 7th grade.  This will provide exposure in the sport of wrestling to younger student athletes. 

The only thing about competing against clubs is that I see no way around it. That would be something that would have to be an exception for wrestling, because no other sport allows it, even in most other counties (i.e. when does a high school soccer team ever compete vs a U-18 AAU team?). It's great to say to compete against the best, but it's hard to see a school district allowing school-based teams to compete against club teams, most likely because the club teams would have to be willing to undergo the same liability constraints as the school system's requirements, something that they aren't designed to do.

Well that all depends on what structure you are following under.  Is it a League that falls under TMSAA or another affiliation? Or if your in a specified conference that does not allow it.  I was informed by TMSAA that you if you are part of them, that you can hose events and have members who come participate that are not members, so if you host you could wrestle AAU or what ever.  But you could not go compete at place that is structured not under the guidelines like TMSAA.   So it all depends on the league/conference you belong to.

One of the reasons that Ohio wrestling is so tough is because everyone competes against each other. Clubs, school programs, etc...are all invited to the state tournament that is hosted by the Ohio High School Athletic Association. It's a huge event and if I am not mistaken they hold it the week after the Ohio high school championships. If you want to elevate the talent level you must be willing to step out of your comfort zone and do things differently. Cleveland and Bradley are public schools, do you not know they will wrestle everyone. No need to reinvent the wheel, just copy what the very best are doing. Edited November 5, 2015 by cbg

I do not know what Metro rules state; however, if you could wrestle clubs during the year, it would help prepare your team for their championships.  I am sure the club teams could not compete for your championships. 

 

Sounds like you are doing a great job at your school.  Continue to push the envelope, it will help all of Metro.

I may be completely off on this one, and please correct me if I am. I know that the Williamson County middle school season is short, like 6-8 weeks I believe. Im not sure on when Metro runs their season, but I remember when coaching in Williamson we didnt face any metro schools. The kids definately deserve a longer season, and to face more competition. Do the seasons overlap at all? Would there be any way to add other teams your lineup that youve never seen before?

I think something like that would be totally doable. I could see it being easier for metro teams to participate in a post-season tourney hosted by another organization than to have other teams come participate in theirs. I know we do see other school's teams come to tournaments. Last year there were a couple teams from outside metro at a dual tournament. But they weren't club teams.

Yes, the seasons are a little offset. Metro is starting its season halfway through Williamson's, which makes alignment very difficult. Our season ends at the same time as the high school season's Region Tournaments, usually the first weekend in February.
