What is the value of Spring Practice?

Just because I'm bored.

 

I have always wondered, what is the value of Spring Practice? Ten days of practice with two scrimmages, while many of the players are playing spring sports.

 

I can see some value in working on plays, schemes, and technique for a few weeks in the spring, but I really don't see the value in practicing and playing scrimmages in pads, full contact.

 

Would like to hear people's opinions.

Getting a chance to look at players who have progressed in the weight program who may not have played in a previous year due to just not being a member of the team or due to not being physically ready to play at a younger age.

 

Getting a chance to look a certain guys at new positions. For instance if you have a stud DE who you want to see playing "standing up" at LB. The spring gives you a chance to see if it's better for the team to make that move or to leave the player where he excelled previously.

 

Those are just a couple of positives for spring ball.

This is a great topic and I like your insight on previous topics regarding such things such as girls basketball strength and conditioning we discussed a year or so ago.

 

First, I believe everything that LBD mentioned can be done in July with a couple more months of strength and conditioning giving you an even better look.

 

Secondly, spring should be heavy on education concerning plays, schemes and especially technique. I believe the risk versus reward is greater in putting two scrimmages in that short of time will leave many inexperienced players ill prepared. Every year I hear about a young man out for the season from spring practice. I do not see a team ready to scrimmage after a handful of practices. We can better justify this in June and July with the gradual acclimatization between 7 on 7s to full contact.

 

Lastly, modifying spring practice to a controlled opponent practice and maybe a controlled inner squad scrimmage to cap things off would be much better than to have multiple contact practices and two scrimmages within two weeks. I believe the changes in contact which began this past season is trickling down from the changes in the NFL and their concussion issues. This isn't just a plug for the Concussion movie but it is the reality we now live. Just so people do not view this is wussuffocation of high school football, the state of Ohio has some pretty good football and they do not even allow spring practice.

I see your point, but you can get hurt in 7 on 7 or working out. The NFL has made all kinds of limited contact rules, and the injury frequency has gotten even higher.

Kids get hurt driving vehicles as well but they are still allowed to get their license at 16. Spring football has more risk due to contact versus working out or 7 on 7s. With a new contact rules from TSSAA, this will affect spring football as well.

 

Your statement regarding the NFL is inaccurate. The NFL has had 34% decrease in concussions between 2012 and 2014.

    • Wanted to see if all of you would lift up Kyle James family in prayer. Kyle was one of the best wrestlers to ever come out of Soddy Daisy and as some of you know he lost his house a few weeks ago and now his family and friends mourns his passing. Not sure if any of you were around in early 2000’s when Kyle was wrestling at Soddy, but he was a 3 time state champ and a Fargo AA along with going to Colorado to train to make the Olympic team. That goal was never reached due to medical issues, but he was an amazing wrestler and his family is as good as gold.     • My opinion the 8 teams will be-  Greenback, Wartburg, Gordonsville, Jo Byrns, Eagleville, Bruceton, Dresden, and South Fulton. Gordonsviile is probably the favorite but I wont say it will be an easy road. With the right draw any of the 8 could win it.
    • I understand Gibson Co. will be announced tomorrow with a familiar name. Not sure about So. Gibson.
