From reading the article, it sounds like the coach basically said I quit without actually saying it. Its always family or personal issues when coaches up and leave programs when the going gets tough. I fell sorry for that team and that community. Union County needs to find somebody to come up there for the long haul, someone who isn't afraid to lose at first to reap the rewards later. Look, I think we can all agree that Union County is never gona be a 9-10 win program, just not enough talent there or talent coming into that area. But for heavens sake, they can be a team who competes and wins 3-5 games on any given year. They say kids up there aren't big on football, well good lord, would you be excited to go to the slaughter 89-0? Heck, Id go coach them tomorrow if I had a staff with me.

will take time to develop that program...hopefully the ones that wants to play will work hard and get a good coach

I was just talking to a old fella while eating breakfast that the only applications they have received thus far are from old retired ex-coaches and a bunch of "youth" coaches with no middle or high school experience.  There must be a way that they can petition the TSSAA to possibly play down in 1A football.  Even if it means being denied the playoffs.  It's a big county and enrollment is high I know but this is a case the TSSAA needs to look at and make an exception even if it penalizes the school.  Let's face it, they wouldn't win more than 3 or 4 if they played in 1A either but at least they might win a couple.  What's everyone think about that?

Larry there has to be some fair way to handle the situation. I suggested to play against other teams JV squads as to disband football. If they did disband somewhere down the road they would field a team again and forget what caused the problem in the first place. Sometimes when a school has kids spread across an entire county common sense should tell the TSSAA that a portion of those kids would never be able to play because of the distance to travel.

  • 2 weeks later...

Take it for what its worth...I have 7 years experience in high school ball. Position coach and coordinator positions...been at some decent programs. I have applied for this job...no phone calls...wouldnt even return my emails. My goal is to be a head coach...winning or not, its about doing the right things and learning how to be successful. Winning takes care of itself. Bad situation here...

I am somewhat familiar with Union County football.

They have at least "some" youth football in Union County. I know kids that have played there. I know it is not a great feeder program, but that is due to the fact that most "talent" leaves at an early age and goes to a neighbor community. They make plans early to play high school ball some where else. I think they would stay if they could develop some stabilty at the high school level.

They have recieved applications from men under 50 with high school coaching experience. I have been told of at least two. I thought that I read where the AD said that he wanted to get a coach in place before school ended for the summer. That way the coach could meet with potential players before they scattered. Three weeks later, and it sounds like possibly no interviews have been done or anything. I think today is the last day of school in Union County.

Unless they announce someone today, the job, for whoever they get, just got a little tougher.
