Week 1: Ten Memphis-area high school football games to watch

John Varlas, USA TODAY NETWORK – Tennessee Published 8:00 a.m. CT Aug. 16, 2017

CBHS MUS

(Photo: Nikki Boertman, The Commercial Appeal)

Here is a look at The Commercial Appeal's top 10 games for Week 1 of the high school football season. This year, high school reporter John Varlas will be picking the winners of each featured game.

Preseason Dandy Dozen rankings and last season's records are in parenthesis.

Game of the week

(11) Ridgeway (9-4) at (4) MUS (10-1)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

The lowdown: Kundarrious Taylor, Cameron Stansbury and company will be a good opening test for the Owls defense, which was terrific last year but will be working in some new faces. These two schools — located less than a mile apart — have played in each of the last two seasons with each team winning once.

The pick: MUS

Don't miss

Mitchell (8-5) at (1) Whitehaven (15-0)

When: Saturday, 8:30 p.m. (Whitehaven Classic)

The lowdown: Whitehaven begins defense of its 6A title with the annual finale of the Whitehaven Classic. Mitchell hasn't defeated its neighborhood rival in well over a decade but Whitehaven knows it won't come easy.

The pick: Whitehaven

(3) Central (10-2) at Melrose (3-7)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

The lowdown: Central coach Lynord Crutchfield told The Commercial Appeal that if his guys can stay out of their own way, they have a chance to do something this year. It starts in always-tough Orange Mound.

The pick: Central

(8) Cordova (12-2) vs. (5) East (13-2) at the Fairgrounds

Friday: 7 p.m.

The lowdown: Is there a game anywhere that features two teams that won 25 games last season? Both teams lost a lot but both teams return plenty, meaning that this one will come down to who protects the ball better and makes fewer mistakes.

The pick: Easily the toughest one to call this week. Cordova in a dogfight.

Arlington (5-6) at (6) Raleigh-Egypt (10-2)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

The lowdown: Arlington's o-line will have to keep Tate Kolwyck on his feet and away from Pharaohs pass rushers Cedric Henderson and Nate Thomas. And kudos to the 6A Tigers for visiting Raleigh.

The pick: If it was any other 3A team, the pick would probably be Arlington. But it's Raleigh-Egypt.

Grenada-Miss. (9-3) at (7) CBHS (8-4)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

The lowdown: This game was originally a Grenada home game but the Chargers' field is flooded. CBHS will certainly appreciate the extra support as Year 3 of the Thomas McDaniel era commences.

The pick: Grenada. Reluctantly.

(10) White Station (7-5) at (11) Briarcrest (7-4)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

The lowdown: There could be lots of offense in this one. Briarcrest returns quarterback Jackson Walker and Memphis commit Tyler Badie while the Spartans are never short of playmakers. The play of White Station's inexperienced secondary will be crucial.

The pick: Briarcrest

Collierville (4-8) at Olive Branch (0-11)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

The lowdown: Optimism is high in Olive Branch as Tyler Turner takes over as the program's fifth coach in five seasons. Collierville's Matt Conners is on the short list of the top QBs in town and will give the Quistors fits.

The pick: Collierville by less than a touchdown

Douglass (7-5) at FACS (8-4)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

The lowdown: This should be a fun under-the-radar matchup. Douglass has two bona fide stars in quarterback Jok Nebk and defensive end Niko Cooper while FACS counters with a high-powered offense led by the area's top passer last year, Jack Grissom (2,812 yards, 29 touchdowns).

The pick: Don't be surprised if each team puts up at least 30 but FACS should edge it.

MASE at Fayette-Ware (8-3) and Freedom Prep at McNairy Central (5-5)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

The lowdown: It's always a nice to see two new programs making their debuts, so tip your cap to the Phoenix and the War Eagles as they embark on their varsity football journeys.

The picks: Fayette-Ware and McNairy Central

Other games (7 p.m. unless noted)

Thursday: Sheffield vs. Oakhaven at Kirby

Friday: Millington at Bolton; Houston at Brighton; ECS vs. Bessemer (Ala.) Academy at Samford University; Fayette Academy at Northpoint; Jackson North Side at Germantown; Overton at Bartlett; Kingsbury at St. Benedict; Hillcrest at Kirby; Covington at Munford; Craigmont at Hardin County; Rossville at North Delta; St. George's at Center Hill; Gibson County at Tipton-Rosemark; MLK Prep at Dyersburg; Wooddale at Montgomery Bell Academy; BTW at Trenton Peabody; Middle College at M.S. Palmer (Miss.); Manassas at Lewisburg; Tunica Rosa Fort at Lausanne; Amory (Miss.) at DeSoto Central; Senatobia at Lake Cormorant; Trezevant at Harding

Saturday: Whitehaven Classic at Whitehaven, Hamilton vs. Westwood, 3 p.m.; Fairley vs. Southwind, 5:30 p.m.

Received in that fashion as well. My reason for doing the beginning of the season is because everyone is undefeated at the beginning of the season. Everybody has a chance to go undefeated and play in the state championship of their classification.

That being stated ... you know as the season progresses, the number of games selected begins to dwindle as well. It's the beginning of the season ... it's suppose to be hard to pick the games!

However ... I understand where you are coming from. Shelby Metro Pick em's ... huh? It just doesn't have that ... panache.
