Playing starters in blowouts

On two occasions I have seen Haywood's coach play her senior starters, including Memphis signee, in 30-40 point blowouts. Are stats that important? Margin of victory? What's the point?  She did it vs Himboldt and they played Madison tonight at Oman Arena. She played the starters until 1:11 on the clock. If I am coaching Shutes doesn't dress out and probably Calloway either.

What if she doesn't dress them out and they lose? What if she is trying to get Miss Basketball? What if she is trying to be a 2,000 point scorer? Stats don't matter but 10 years from nobody is going to remember Haywood coach played her starters but they will remember that Shutes was the All time leading scorer at Haywood. She miss that game and that could cost her. I wouldn't care if I was playing a middle school team, if you step on the floor friendly ball is out the door coach or player.

Or maybe its Coaches egos! They think a 30-40 point win looks better in the paper or on Coach T than a 20 point win! Some Coaches believe it is about them and not the players! How about the other kids on the bench that show up at every practice and bust their butts just to make the starters better! But I have seen this as well! The Coach on the losing end will leave their starters in as well just trying to make the score less embarrassing! Either way you cant nurture your program up 30 with 3 mins to go with upperclass starters on the floor!

Who cares.... let the good players play! The basketball in west TN is bad enough as it is. Who wants to really watch Haywood’s second string kids against Madison...? If I’m going to watch Haywood play, it’s because I’m going to watch Jamirah score 50.

Player development comes in practice...

Amen and amen!  Great minds think alike.

    • Dyersburg may win back to back to back championships. They are going to be hands down the best 3A team. Plus their District/region/sectionals are not very good. They basically just have to make it to region out of a 5 team district that has a few decent teams. South Gibson will be okay but they graduate their best player and there is nobody in the region 7 or region 8 who is going to compete with them.
    • I remember very well watching things change in the late 80's and yes it's all schools. Most people that are in charge today have any idea because they were raised and taught under this social experiment so they don't have a clue. Anyone that does see the truth for what it is usually try and hide it by blending in so that the School Gestapo doesn't round them up and take them to the Fuhrer ( kindly putting it ). Yes it is all schools not just Maryville. This train ride is not headed in a good direction and if the public had seen a movie of what's happening now back in 1980 everyone would have been headed home afterwards to change underware.
    • Hoping to make the playoffs.
    • You are so correct!  It’s really 99.9% of academia want to change to way that education is not only taught but the way it is viewed.  The pendulum has definitely swung as far to the left as possible and eventually will swing to the right much too far.  I have always  said that politics and one’s personal religious views need to stay out of education,  but for the last 40 years education has been running full throttle to what we have today.  If the social experiment that we are currently experiencing continues it is only a matter of time before the public school system in the USA completely collapses and all kids attend private schools or even worse don’t go to school.
    • He was a bruise but Aaron Dykes is HVA’s best RB ever.
