first of all, I'm a proud Humboldt Alumni regardless of the current situation with Humboldt football but all these comments about coach Bland, coach Reed etc.; is in the past and for the sake of the players (who are the most important people in this situation) Humboldt must move forward. Some of the comments, "Humboldt players that went to school not graduating" please provide proof & if they didn't graduate that had no affect on the High school football team. As someone stated, " Humboldt needs to find a coach that's a mentor" & that's going to give the program at least five (5) good years. I have no doubt that Humboldt will return to the top of in football.l

You know I’m a Milan guy so I always have a passionate dislike for Humboldt because of our rivalry in sports thru the years. However I do hope you guys can get the program turned around and wish nothing but the best for the kids.

I do think that academic performance as a school corelates  to some degree to winning on the field. For example in 1995 when Humboldt played for a state title they were a 3A school. Now over 20 years later you are a 1A school. Currently you are in the bottom 5% of tn school districts in regards to growth and achievement according to last year’s state report cards. I think that is directly caused by many of the best and brightest in Humboldt leaving for other school districts. Additionally these are usually some of your most committed students when it comes to extracurricular activities such as sports. Look at the schools that are king in football in TN such as Alcoa and Maryville. They have some of the best test scores in the state. It’s no coincidence that the two go hand in hand much of the time.

Great point BPM. "Excellence is not an act , its a habit"- Aristotle

I think any team with a cluster of great athletes at one time can have a few dominant years, but to consistently have an outstanding program it helps when all aspects of the program including , academics, expectations and community support are held to a high standard

Agree 100%. Humboldt over the last several decades has been a traditionally strong program in West TN until the last few years. And they are not hurting for athletes. The school probably has more than 95% of all 1A schools. They just aren’t getting out of the halls and on to the fields. The kids just aren’t as committed to excellence as they used to be.

Couple things

1. Congrats Coach Ballard

2. The academics of the overall school and athletes don't always matchup for example every senior athlete in the class of 2017 graduated.

3. The whole Coach Ab discouraging players is true several players mentioned to me that one senior athlete was told that if he went to football practice instead of open gym he wouldn't play basketball at all.

4. The players had a mentor in Coach Reid but after the 2017 seniors graduated there was no longer in team leadership and a simple lack of passion for football.

    • Well nothing new, the Mustangs are really talented again this coming season!  They very well could go undefeated in regular season.  We shall see what happens in postseason.  I think the path to state title game is a little clearer than years past.  I think the Stangs are going to be really good and I think the traditional teams around in 2A are not going to be as strong.  It should be a fun season!
    • I would not put too much stock into the UH over Eagleville. From what I understand they were pretty banged up in that tourney. Catcher was out, they were throwing pretty deep in their bullpen and a few key players were beat up in their infield. Sounds like they are pretty healthy heading into the district tournament. Look at their schedule, they played some really good teams.
