Class 1A Region 3 Mid-Season Poll

Looking for some thoughts on how Region 3 stands after week 5. My personal thoughts:

1. South Pittsburg

I went to go see the Pirates in action on week 1. I look for the Pirates to make a deep plunge in the playoffs. They seem to be the team to beat in the east.

2. Copper Basin

My alma mater has been impressive so far on both sides of the ball. I look for them to run with the Pirates but am not quite convinced they can pull that one out just yet.

3. Whitwell

I feel the Tigers have been dealt a bit of a bad hand in terms of schedule strength. After the game last night, I’m convinced that they’re not an 0-5 team. Hats off to #59, #2, and #1 for displaying toughness and grit regardless of the score. They’ll win ball games as the season winds down if they can develop some confidence.

4. Sale Creek

The Creek is surprisingly athletic this year. I feel they’re being let down by the coaching staff. The players are good enough to win ball games. Hats off to #2. Kid is a ball player.

5. Lookout Valley

I haven’t had the chance to see Valley in action so any input would be appreciated.

I don’t see SP getting to the mercy threshold against the boys in the silver hats. I’ve seen both play and Basin will score touchdowns. I do, however, see the pirates scoring more. They’re just an absolute terror in the box and that’s proving to be one of the biggest weaknesses for the Cougs this year. And I agree that Region 5 has some players, but Basin would run with every team with the exception of Fayetteville and Cornersville. Just out of curiosity, what’s your 1A Top 10?

SP should mercy CB. No dis on CB but that bunch is different level. And region 5 Moore Co or Mt Pleasant would probably beat CB. Not saying would be a beat down but I would take those teams as my picks. CB is good group but the overall region is extremely weak.

No region should have only 5 teams and 4 playoff spots. This needs to be changed. I think only 2 teams should come out of cupcake regions.

Region 1 has 4 teams. You can literally go 0-10 and reach the playoffs. Take Unaka in 2017, I believe for example. It’s just hard to cut it to 2 and still have a fair playoff for 1A. It’s also hard to judge what a “cupcake” region is. Like I said in OP, Whitwell is 0-5 but by no means is a bad football team.

CB is no state champion this year, but they’ll beat up on the Region 4 team they play in the first round. SP and Clay Co. are the only teams standing between CB and the final 4. We’ll just have to see how the rest of the season plays out.

Whitwell drew the short end of the stick with their strength of schedule, definitely down but I don’t think they are as bad as their record suggests. Basin is definitely not a cupcake passing for over 300 in multiple games this season.

    • Deja vu all over again, 7 yrs apart. SMDH Does anybody talk to each other?
    • OK, well, that’s because two quarterbacks can’t start. That’s football 101. The main quarterback won the starting job, so he was on varsity, and the Seymour transfer did not win the starting job. He played some varsity. He was mainly junior varsity, and he balled out when healthy, so for the starting quarterback who’s been starting varsity since his freshman year, if you have any form of proof that he’s gotten worse, somehow, whether that means stats or whatnot, please feel free to share.
    • They’ve both gotten worse. I’ve seen enough games to know that.
    • The only two transfers that Bearden has gotten that went on to play college football were a defensive back from Karnes, who transferred here way before the new coaching staff got here, and a running back from Carter, who went on to play at Maryville College. Both players received those offers while at Bearden, and both players got a diploma from Bearden High School. Therefore, they are Bearden kids, and you can’t do anything about that.   The transfer from Seymour didn’t win the job, what do you expect two quarterbacks to start at the same time? He played great on JV when he could stay healthy, and when he came in on varsity, he did great. The quarterback position is definitely going to be in good hands when the current starting quarterback leaves, but until then, they’re just going to be battling it out like every good quarterback competition does. The current starting quarterback has his flaws, and that is in the pass game, but what he doesn’t have flaws is running and scrambling, and if you go back and watch any game, which I’m sure you didn’t watch any, we used him very often, and when we needed a deep ball, we brought in the transfer from Seymour. The starting quarterback last year will be a senior this year, and the Seymour transfer will be a junior, so the Seymour transfer is definitely going to get his spotlight. He may even win the job this year. Football isn’t about who the newspaper thinks is the best kid. The best kid in the position will win the starting job, and I trust the coaching staff more than a newspaper or article to pick my starting QB.
    • I mean, we’ve only gotten two transfers that went on to play college football, one who went to UT Martin came his second semester junior year before the new coaching staff was here, and the other one went on to play at Maryville College, in which I don’t believe he had any interest prior to transferring.
