MBA and McCallie for the DII AAA Gold Ball

I'm a McCallie fan (just to be clear). Don't know much about MBA except they are in the final game. It does seem like MBA is trending a little more positive than McCallie.

It is also very difficult to beat the same high quality team twice in this division.

Not sure if BJ Harris will play Thursday. He could be the difference maker.

Bottom line - close game all the way. Team with less mistakes will win. Of course.

Heart - McCallie 31 MBA 27

Head - Pick-em.

It will for sure be a defensive matchup. A very good offense going against a very good defense. Lots of talent on both sides of the field. Lots of weapons on the offensive side for McCallie, but MBA has proved throughout this season that they know how to shut those key pieces down. The most points they allowed all season was 24 against Briarcrest, which was prior to starting Marcel Reed at QB. While MBA has been on a roll since that game (despite the monsoon loss to Baylor which they avenged), McCallie is still probably the more complete team top-to-bottom. Don't expect this game to be high scoring at all; both teams may not get more than 24 points Thursday night.

History isn't on their side for McCallie however. Since 1993, MBA is 22-2 against McCallie, with the Big Blue's wins both coming in the years they advanced to the State Title game (both were the score 34-21). This time it'll be against that same MBA team. Learning from last year, it seems like the key this year will be ball security, as well as who controls momentum and possession. Hopefully this game will live up to the hype.

Prediction: Toss-up

Tough to say since the freshman QB wasn’t leading the offense for MBA. I would give a slight nod to MBA.  Both have stout defense, both are healthy-ish.  If it comes down to special teams, PC has the edge.  #3 for PC is special and easy to overlook.  You will see him in Cookeville.....I think he is smaller than his stats from an unathorized site suggest and is closer to 5’5 and 130-140 lbs.  Will be the fastest feet on the field and if Alcoa gets a clean hit on him they will be the first to do so.

    • Understand the young thing.  I was one of those.  Barely 17 when I graduated from high school and started college.  But redshirting for athletic purposes isn't doing them any favors, in my opinion.  Life isn't always going to be fair.

    • The Girls Basketball team I am a part of played for a gold ball this season. One of the biggest differences in the sports is that there is no field prep/maintenance in basketball.   Our baseball is successful and play 30 games in the regular season as well. All of the teams dedicate A LOT of time in preparing for their next opponent.
    • Im pretty excited about the new rules that NFHS voted to adopt. Does anyone know if this will take place in Tennessee starting this year? I think I heard/read somewhere that the TSSAA bi-laws say they have to mirror what the NFHS does, and when the NFHS offered the current weight classes as options, TSSAA didn’t adopt them until NFHS made them official. Did NFHS make these changes official starting next season or will it be similar to the weight classes where TSSAA doesn’t change what they are doing until it is  an officially official part of the NFHS rule book? It’ll be interesting to see if it is rolled out for the new TSSAA Middle School season and I saw a post where the youth wrestling in TN was going to vote on adopting it as well.  I’ll pray for all the youth coaches that will have to shoulder the confusion from all those crazy #### parents who already think they know the rules more than everyone else  . Imagine the first time their kid is taken down and a 3 goes up on the scoreboard or their kid gets pinned with only one point of contact in the cylinder. Their heads might explode. i kid, I kid. Sort of. I’m surprised ride time was brought down with all the other changes. I know some argue that it promotes stalling on top, but its been an official scoring method in college forever, so I figure it must be doing something right. Do any of you think that’ll ever be implemented?
