2020 Football Season (Emergency Coronavirus Plan): Hypothetical

I just wanted to start this post by saying that I hope everyone is doing well and taking care of themselves during this terrible time our country is facing.  As an educator, coach, and mentor to young people I'd like to be the first to say that I miss the students.  I hope they are taking all of the necessary steps needed to remain healthy.

I have read on several social media sites as well as articles on whether or not football needed to be played in the fall of 2020.  As a coach I desperately want to get back to the grind and hope that our students, especially the seniors, aren't "cheated" out of a year with their peers.  We all get caught up in the winning/losing and the competitive side of things.  At the end of the day it should always be about the kids and what is in the best interest for them.

Tonight while sitting at home I drafted a potential outline of what an "Emergency Coronavirus Plan" could look like in the fall.  This is just my opinion and you all please feel more than free to comment and share your thoughts.  I hope it's not needed and hope that we are able to return to a normal schedule in May.  Here's what I came up with:

The Week of 9/4:  Preseason Week 1

The Week of 9/11:  Preseason Week 2

The Week of 9/18:  Preseason Week 3 (Jamborees)

9/25:  Week 1

10/2:  Week 2

10/9:  Week 3

10/16:  Week 4

10/23:  Week 5

10/30:  Week 6

11/6:  Week 7

11/13:  Week 8

11/20:  Week 9

11/27:  Week 10

Top 2 teams from each Region Qualify for the TSSAA State Playoffs.  16 team Playoff Brackets.  Playoff schedule as follows:

12/4:  First Round

12/11:  Quarterfinals

12/18:  Semifinals

The Next 2 Weeks are the weeks of Christmas and New Year's.  I'd propose a 2-Week Gap before the State Championships.

January 14, 15, 16 would be Blue Cross Bowl Weekend for the 2020 High School Football Season.

Tell me what you all think.  Stay safe!

It is pretty much what east coast school already do.  I've coached in VA, MD, and NY and we started  school after Labor Day so that is a viable option with precedence.  Rumblings are that TDOE not TSSAA is considering an after Labor Day school start.

No way will they (T$$AA) let high school football bleed over into January.  It will still have to end the first week of December

TSSAA will accommodate football in any and every way possible, even to the point of severely shortening basketball season. Losing money from basketball/spring fling was a punch to their gut, but football is where their operating revenue comes from... if it benefits football, don't expect anything to be "off the table".

    • “facts” or better yet ‘opinions’ had been up for weeks/months. that’s not why the thread was deleted. get over yourself.
    • Im pretty excited about the new rules that NFHS voted to adopt. Does anyone know if this will take place in Tennessee starting this year? I think I heard/read somewhere that the TSSAA bi-laws say the have to mirror what the NFHS does, and when the NFHS offered the current weight classes as options, TSSAA didn’t adopt them until NFHS made them official. Did NFHS make these changes official starting next season or will it be similar to the weight classes where TSSAA doesn’t change what they are doing until it is  an officially official part of the NFHS rule book? It’ll be interesting to see if it is rolled out for the new TSSAA Middle School season and I saw a post where the youth wrestling in TN was going to vote on adopting it as well.  I’ll pray for all the youth coaches that will have to shoulder the confusion from all those crazy #### parents who already think they know the rules more than everyone else  . Imagine the first time their kid is taken down and a 3 goes up on the scoreboard or their kid gets pinned with only one point of contact in the cylinder. Their heads might explode. i kid, I kid. Sort of. I’m surprised ride time was brought down with all the other changes. I know some argue that it promotes stalling on top, but its been an official scoring method in college forever, so I figure it must be doing something right. Do any of you think that’ll ever be implemented?
    • Crazy how the thread just gets deleted when facts come out.
    • I understand I guess it depends on the school you are with and the time you want to put in.  It’s evident of the schools that don’t put in as much times.  I would say basketball players put in as much time as any sport in our school system and this is coming from a football town.  Bball is a longer season than other sports.
