Tyner HC forced to resign

I didn't have the privilege of playing for Coach T - so old that when I played he was at Kirkman as an assistant.  Tyner is very different than when I played there but I love my school and I love those kids, Coach T, and his coaching staff.  This was a very tough deal - obviously not handled well.  I hope football at Tyner can eventually recover from this and I wish Coach T the best with the rest of his career and life.  I hope that despite this sour ending he will cherish the legacy of impacting hundreds of young men with a truly unique and special kind of love.  Man do the guys who played for him love this man - it is a real thing.  Blessings to you Coach T!!!

Do any of the Tyner faithful know exactly why he was let go? It obviously wasn’t a lack of character or his relationship with the young men that wear the jersey there.

Some people - including posters I have seen on here - and others around Chattanooga would say the game had passed him by.  Some might think Tyner underachieved the two years after their double overtime loss in the state championship with the talent they had.  Some might think they should have gone for two after first overtime and they would have won that championship - or at least it was their best shot at winning it.  Some might have gotten tired of  apparently being led to believe by Coach T that this was going to be his last year for the last 5 or more years including some other assistants at other schools who were heir apparent and it never came to fruition because he was going to go one more year.  These are just rumors and rumblings and things that I have heard other people say.  

It is rare to find a man so solely dedicated to the young men he coached and loved and again - had a very unique way of communicating with them, molding them and making them better men.  The principle made a very tough decision and with apparently poor communication between him and Coach T and any other number of things i don't know about - this devolved into a stinking mess that is going to be costly to clean up.

When you played Tyner, you knew you were in for a hard hitting game for 4 quarters. Wayne also had his kids play clean football. Huge amount of respect for him and his staff. I assure you they will regret this action because it wasn’t just about the wins to Wayne, he was invested in those kids in making them young men that had a positive impact on society after they left school.

With the wrong hire, the rest of 2A can breathe a big sigh of relief. Tyner is already routinely losing their best football athletes to other area schools.

I think with the exception of the Title game that they lost to UC they were overhyped. Forrest beat them in 2016 by racing out to a 14-0 lead then basically playing the worst 2nd, 3rd, and 4th quarters of the season. Still won by a touchdown. "Ram Train" and all that- give me a break. 

Having said that, the guy's body of work over a long period of time is impressive. With coaches bailing, esp at the 2A level for bigger schools and paychecks, you'd think longevity would be appreciated. That's why I have respect for Sharp over at Lewis.  

The off the field stuff is huge. Esp at a magnet school. These coaches often see the kids more than their own parents do. And when broken homes are involved, that much more so. 

Surely there is more to this. When a coach is let go, especially if it seems like a questionable decision,  people are hurt. So I do send my condolences to the Tyner community.

Reminds me of what they did to Philip Fulmer. Fulmer wasn't a bad coach ever at Tennessee imo. His downfall was the loss of David Cutcliffe and not hiring a worthy replacement for such a great offensive mind in the offensive coordinator position. Just my opinion.

The way it was handled tells me what I need to know. Not so much the move itself.

Sad that this happened to such a fine gentleman who was a tremendous role model for so many young men,

I don’t place blame on him either. Like I said if they felt a change was needed then so be it. Folks lose jobs they want to keep everyday. It’s all in the way a great and loyal employee is dismissed that’s troubling here. That’s all on the administration and says a lot about their character or lack there of to me.

100% agree it’s all in how you handle it!

 

We had a gentleman that worked for a company I managed for nearly 30 years. In his last year he was having  major difficulties doing his job safely. (Kept having accidents ) Eventually he had one that put him well above company standards, but rather fire him we called him in the office and told him that this was going to be a retirement rather than dismissal. 
 

We threw this gentleman a party and generally just made a big deal out of it money, jackets, and a free vacation were parting gifts!

No one to this day with the exception of the safety manager, myself , and HR knows this guy was let go due to safety reasons. ( this includes his son who still works there)

The guy still runs me down to say hello anytime he sees me in town!
