Karns is for sure better than they were last year, but ya'll will have too much fire power for them. Should come out feeling better about the defense but it will be counterfeit.

Defense I thought played better against Powell than JC believe it or not. We left Powell with a couple of super short fields and the QB just made some plays that you have to tip your cap to. They ran pretty good, but nothing comparable to what JC did. I thought we hemmed Wheeler in decently. He got some yards, of course, but didn’t run all over us by no means. Having our MLB back certainly helped, for sure. Still a ton of work to do though.

Was the short fields due to quick three and outs on O plus a bad punt that did not flip the field?

Late in the 1st quarter a kid of ours let a punt go ( near the 25-30 yard line) that he probably should’ve caught, and the ball ended up rolling all the way to our own 5 yard line, and we just never could get out of that hole, practically the rest of the game. It was a real momentum changer. Their DL whipped our OL from that point forward.

It also didn’t help that our starting RB went out fairly early, from what seemed like some kind of disciplinary issue. When he went out he had 10 carries for 50+ yards, which isn’t shabby at all. They controlled field position after that punt we missed, and never relinquished it. Credit to their D for that. Like I said, they have some hosses on D.

Another thing that surprised me was how open their receivers were all night. Every time they caught one, there was at least 10 yards between them and our closest defender. They dinked and dunked us quite a bit. The game was won by their DL, because they gave them tremendous field position all night long. Considering they held field position all night long, I thought our D did fairly decent considering what they were up against.

I would be remiss, though, if I didn’t mention the few, really good sustained long drives their O did have. The one that put them up 28-7 was a great drive, and broke our kids’ backs, proverbially speaking.

Kids not catching or stopping punts from rolling is a pandemic in high school these days. I don't get it.

They can really be momentum changers man. You don’t realize how valuable a good, reliable punt returner is, until you don’t have one. Not saying ours is bad, he just needs experience, but you know what I mean.
