Completely agree. One difference that I think will help Hume-Fogg this year is the new head coach and assistant coach. The coaching battle should be much closer than last year. They have done a great job this year.

That didn't age well. Don't know what you got till its gone.

Hume-Fogg bunch of talented athletic kids but poorly coached and its showing. Upperman well coached with less talent.. man that Ty Cobb kid is a hooper arguably one of if not the best player in the state. How much interest is he gaining at the next level (D1)?  Will be interested if he finishes out his high school career there

Hhhhmmmmm

I found out some pretty startling information prior to the game today about last years HF team that tells me I was right about this coaching staff still being better than last years.

He actually got a D1 offer from Tennessee Tech today (school about 20 minutes from Upperman). I'm sure there'll be lots more roll in as he is just a SO currently.

It ain’t a rumor when it comes straight from the parents and players themselves. Don’t get me wrong they loved Barry, but based on what actually happened prior to the state tournament last year….it ain’t close.

It is a 50/50 proposition that it is the truth when you only get one side of the story.

You are glad he is gone. I get it. But try to remember what kind of team Hume Fogg had with Givens before Barry got there and then realize how far he took them. Your new guy was handed the keys to a Ferrari. We shall see what he does with a Datsun.

As far as coaching goes, as a whole Metro Nashville Public Schools are a total joke due to the lack of support and discipline problems.  With that being said both Hume Fogg and Martin Luther King are totally different situations.  Both are extremely good academic magnet schools (routinely ranked in the Top 100 national public schools) where both the students and parents are engaged in the child’s academic lives. I could personally see the coaching staff staying together and the team continuing to improve over the next several years.  While not perfect, the students that graduate from Hume
Fogg have a strong academic foundation.

I agree completely with this, and you are right on many counts. However, I deeply love and respect what Barry did! I hated to see him leave at first actually. My response to the coaching is more so how the teams were prepped for the state tournament from last year to this year. I found out that in the 10 days leading up to last years matchup the coach only had them practice….2 of these days…..that makes no sense. I’m not commenting on their coaching outside of that in this discussion as I feel the other areas aren’t as fact related and more potential bias could be brought in the other areas.

CBG, Therein lies the problem. HFA and MLK have high academic standards and requirements that not all of the best ATHLETES can meet.  When they get a run of academically minded athletes they have success. When they do not, there are lean years. Both schools past history shows this to be true. Hume Fogg has had great years in basketball and VERY lean years. MLK also. It applies to all their sports.  The thing that separates them is their kids typically have more self-discipline and work ethic.

He’s way better than Tn Tech. They have no chance at Cobb. I see him in the SEC or at the very least a very good mid major.

Not to knock Cobb. He’s bar none one of the best in the state. But a lot of guys aren’t getting the offs we think they should get because of the transfer portal. He’s got two more years to build these offers. But there’s loads of talented kids now that don’t get the offeres they would’ve gotten if they played 10 years ago
