private vs. public

hayseed - you say "publics occasionally have runs," but privates can't put 10-12 talented basketball players out per year either. You quoted last year's A tournament saying there were 4-5 privates. What about this year? 2 privates out of 8? That percentage is about on target. Just wanted to make sure you see that this stat fluctuates from year to year. Sometimes privates may dominate and other times, publics will dominate just as much. I hope you realize that the only consistency is inconsistency.

Being from a very small 1a rural school, we feel that it is a very big advantage to private schools that compete with us for sports. Last year in single A State basketball tourney, I believe that at least 4 or 5 of the schools were private. It's just too hard for small schools to have 10 - 12 competitive players year in and out. Even harder in 1A football. Yes, you might have a run by a rural school for a couple of years but not the kind of consistentcy the privates have each year. I just think they should have their own division for sports, and the true 1A schools compete against each other. They could move the privates up to 2A or 3A but I think that got veto'd by those divisions long ago. This is just an opinion not meant to offend the private school community.

hayseed...I`m a public school supporter and you offend me. Basically what you are saying is that you don`t like seeing a private school do well. You mention something about 4 or 5 private schools being in the state tournament and seem to think that this is somehow unfair...please tell us all how many private schools in the state tournament would be more to your liking. Would it be ok if one private school made it? Maybe it would be OK if two made it every now and then. How is it that you can measure fairness by how many teams make it to a tournament? What measure do you use? Please enlighten me on where the number of teams in a state basketball tournament crosses the line between fair and unfair. You seem to indicate that 4 or 5 is unfair. So is 3 fair? If so then since there was only 1 this year then could we surmise that publics have an unfair advantage since only one private made the state tournament this year? Your argument has no merit whatsoever other than you just don`t seem to like it when a private school does well.

"No consistency" in small rural publics in basketball? Are you kidding? Have you ever heard of Perry County, Pickett County, Cosby, Summertown, etc.??? Those schools are the standard of excellence in single A basketball. They have made more state tourney appearances (even in the last few years) than any four class A private schools you can name. I wish someone with more time than me would research that.

You are right, you probably would not have played at the 3A school at that position. It sounds as though you made a decision to play at a private school because you knew you would get to play. And that is the thing... private schools can draw in kids that should be in upper classes and allows them to "play down". It gives kids choices. Do I stay at a big school, not play, maybe not win? Or do I go to a small private school, get to play, have a shot at a state title? As a kid I think the choice is obvious. The majority of public school kids do not have these choices, either because of location or because of money. I will say also, that I have seen one case where the money problem was taken care of by someone!!!

Softball,

I too have seen difficult times hit private school families and noooooooooooo money exchanged hands and the students had to leave the school. I have also seen times when public school students were given lunch money on money to go on school trips because their families were poor or encountering difficult times. In both of the above mentioned cases the students should have been helped and the schools, individuals giving help, or the individuals receiving help should not receive any punishment. Most everyone needs some type of assistance at some point during their lives.

    • We could sure use some math teachers country wide. Ever go into a store or restaurant and the bill comes to $9.97 and you give them a ten dollar bill and 2 pennies because you wanted a nickle back and then the meltdown starts and the next thing two more people have to come and help figure it out and the place comes to a complete halt. I see this everyday and it's a sad representation of all these schools allowing these kids out the door to get shortchanged the rest of their life.
    • I like the Pirates chances. I’ll be there as soon as work allows.
    • Stars, I heard we were searching far and wide for some math teachers. Any chance their kids bench press or 40 times are getting checked? LOL I’ve heard good things from 825.
    • I think it was expected. “Bad” luck I guess to get a couple difference maker QBs in the same class. I thought the decision was made a little early myself, but they were struggling offensively last year.  I assume the running quarterback alco had last year would be a senior this fall, and the transfer would start the following two years in addition to getting a ton of playing time this year. Maybe he waits two yrs, but I doubt it. The kid is good. So is the one who stayed.
    • I'm from Cloudland and we've never played a sectional game.  We need to win tomorrow night to avoid that bus ride.  Us and north greene can play with you guys so I'm expecting good games whoever the matchup is.
