clipper
Yesterday coach Lynn Allen officially anounced his resignation from coaching. He citing wanting to spend more time with his family and especially his 15 month old son and to work closer to the Karns communitee where he lives. He wants to transfer to a teaching position closer to his home. The Fountian City communitee is very proud of coach Allen and the job he has done. We feel he has brought respectability back to a once proud program in the short time he has been there. Disipline and grades were important factors in playing time. A team grade point average of 3.1 was posted the last semester. Good luck to Coach and his beautiful family. I know he will be successful no matter what he chooses to do. redandblack63
Any ideas on who Central will look to to take their program to the next level. Wiil they stay in house to replace Coach Allen or will they actually search and put in place a coach who can take the program to the next level. Any names comimg up on fillling the position? Several names come to mind. The Assistant at Fulton who is a former Central Star is one of a few who would have the experience and association with a first rate program to help Central to be competitive and prepare them to advance past the district and region. If Central stays in house the administration is making a statement that Basketball at Central will always take a back seat to football. 2Hot4U
Chad Smith from South Doyle has to be a player in any open job in Knox County. I know Sevier County has contacted him and he supposedly said "no thanks." Central should make contact with him and try to hore him. They would be really good in a hurry. chill
Mark Majors is an assistant at Fulton who was an All-KIL player at Central in the mid-late eighties. He would be an excellent choice for this position. Former Oneida coach Gary Barnes would also be an excellent candidate. He was interested in the job before when Allen was named interim. He is currently coaching in Georgia....
masterc
There is a strong possiblility that Austin-East's Charles Mitchell may be a candidate for this opening. He was on the short list the last time the job came open
swamp
Why would he leave AE for Central? redandblack63
I have a couple of questions. 1.) If Charles Mitchell and Gary Barnes were interested in the job the last time it came open why in the world didn't the administration hire one of these fine experienced head coaches. 2.) Maryville, A.E., and Fulton have been able to have very successful football and basketball programs of late and many of their athletes play both. Everyone knows that football is king at Central. Rumor is that Central's football coaches discourage football players from playing basketball because they miss time in the weight room. If this is true Central is not a very attractive job. Especially for Coach Mitchell. Central obviously has many good athletes on campus as evidenced by their success in football. But if football is unwilling to share athletes with the basketball program Central can only hope to have a mediocore program and it would be very difficult to keep a quality coach for any period of time. I heard that the girls coach was interested and would be willing to coach both the boys and girls. Is here any truth to this?
chill
Swamp, Coach Mitchell doesn't get a lot of support from the Roadrunner faithful. Even when they are at the state there is a lot of complaining about not winning the Gold Ball. Most would be happy just to be there. He does an great job motivating his team, but he also loses players because of discipline problems. When they beat Loudon, their crowd was booing him for stalling the ball, even though they probably lose if he doesn't use this tactic. He's also from Bolivar and not from East Knoxville. Knox Central ought to be one of the strongest programs in Knoxville because of the same reasons that Fulton is loaded every year. You have strong basketball players and you have great athletes which is mix that wins games especially in East Tennessee(also Coach Wright is top notch). I'm also surprised that anyone would leave AE when you basically just have to show up and win 20 games a season.......
redupset
i have said it before... CHAD SMITH is the man !!! any AD should call chad--- do not wait on him to contact you any job that opens up chad has taken south doyle from winning 3 or 4 games a year up to a hard working team that can play w/ almost any team [Edited by redupset on 4-4-03 4:25P]
clipper
Central's team last year had Battle, DJ Smith, Lee Smith, Hartmans, plus some more underclassmen, all from the football team. Shavar Young was rehabing a shoulder or he mught have been out there to. I'm not sure if some friction between the football and basketball head coaches wasn't going on. That might be where you got the discouraging football players to play basketball. I wouldn't be real surprised to see coach Helton's son playing bball next year. Rumor has it the most likely replacement might be J.D. Lambert who has done a good job with the Central girls team the last couple of years. Lambert is a gym rat who seems to spend as much time around basketball as coach Darden at Carter (and thats a lot). Whomever becomes the new coach has a solid foundation to build on. A team that is senior loaded and a tremendous soph class.
