Cheatham Co. Schools Shut Down Athletics

A sad sidenote to this fiasco, is that almost half of Harpeth's football players did not report to practice yesterday afternoon. Seeing as how their mentors took the stance of taking their ball and going home if they didn't get their way, these players took the same stance with their coaches over team issues. The players were caught in the middle of financial problems not of their making. The student/athletes are the ones that suffer when adults on both sides of the argument are not looking at the big picture.

 

For the record, I think the coaches deserve every penny of that supplement and the school board used athletics to get the community's attention and the county commission used the oportunity to be the hero so they could save face over raising taxes and imposing a wheel tax. The kids are watching the adults every move. Be a role model.

this is not a issue about the board, it is a issue that some players were upset at a coach and a parent talked a bunch of young people into following him because he said he could do something about it. All that happened alot of players are not playing on their homecoming because they were influenced by an adult that thinks he has more power than he really does.

Coaching is a profession and we expect to be paid each and every month. Just because we work for peanuts doesn't mean we don't expect to get them! To say such a thing implies that coaching is not a profession and that we do not deserve the pay we earn. In every profession, you have the right to strike! This is all these men did; they exercised their freedom of speech and threatened to strike if the Board and Commission didn't do the right thing!

No, this did not have anything to do with the school board or the county commission. It is entirely unrelated except for the fact that the student athletes followed suit and used the same justification for walking out as their coaches were prepared to do. The whole school board thing was horribly mishandled from every aspect. The kids in Cheatham County were used by adults. Tack on an 0-4 start to the season, 2 of those losses to teams that haven't beaten anybody else, and you've got a frustrated team. Did they handle their team issues in a mature way? No, they're kids. They followed the lead of their mentors.

It's a shame that you don't know what the REAL story is.....these kids made this decision on their own.....they came to the parents for direction....parents told them what was at stake and the possibility of not playing this year was a factor....these kids felt strong enough about their reasons for striking that they were willing to take that risk....to try to make things better for them, their teammates and every future athlete that plays sports in Cheatham County..... that is the REAL story.....so now YOU know!
