Where are some of the most reccomended & useful youth (middle school age) football/training camps in or near Tennessee.

We live in East TN. & my thirteen year-old needs to work on basic skills & become aware of the level of competion & dedication required for future high school players.

I know UT has a camp but I have heard that it may not be that useful for a 13 yr. old.

Any ideas?

thanks,

Does Tennessee Tech still do camps? I know they used to. Vandy has one and I think MTSU. I don't know if that is what your looking for. Just taught I might could help. At MTSU, they had a camp for all ages. If I am right, one week was for youths and the next for high school, you may want to check to see if they still do that. I went to one when I was in Junior High. That was a few years ago, around 97 .

The UT camp is fun, but it's not really good for instruction. It's more geared towards the prestige of being on the UT campus. Good instructional camps in the area are at Carson-Newman (primarly a blocking camp), Eastern Kentucky University, and at Furman University.

Several of the local high schools have good youth camps. Powell High has a camp the second week of July that is outstanding.

Where will your son go to high school? Were I you I would contact the high school coach and see what camps he reccomends.

If you can get him into the HS level camps, the UT camps are pretty good. The younger camps aren't much but they usually put together a strong staff for the others. We attended them for several years.

He will go to Knoxville Halls, but as far as I know right now, Halls is without a Coach.

We went to an afternoon minicamp at Halls High last year but it was marginal at best.

We will check out the Powell Camp and the other camps.

Thanks to all

Portland High School offers a camp on the first week of June for all incoming seventh graders to incoming ninth graders. The emphasis is to teach the fundamentals of football (the very basics {blocking/tackling}) as well as implementing the basics of both the wing-t offense, and our defense. The best part about the camp is the cost...nothing. It's free, and several area sports reps provide door prizes as well as a t-shirt for every player with perfect attendance. This is not only for Portland players, but also from the surrounding areas, or anywhere for that matter. This is a great opportunity for your son!

UT Chattanooga used to have an excelent camp for grades 7 - 11. I don't know if they still have it or not but is worth checking out. UK has several camps for middle school and high school groups that offer full contact camps as well as the standard sneakers and shorts type of instruction. Sewanee, Univ of the South has traditionally held a wing -T type of instructional camp which is especially good for skill players in an option or double slot type of offense. Carson Newman has an excellent Offensive Lineman camp open to jr. high age through 11th grade.

    • I have no idea who your team is, but Memphis and other Shelby Co. schools have hardly made a dent, if you’re talking Game 15 appearances. Outside of a couple by Whitehaven, I can’t recall the last team in a final.
    • Robbed you guy at a chance of 3 state championships. You never kne, sond best team in the west my have beat you also, but you sure deserved the chance to play um.
    • Eagleville also loses Brown the catcher, Lamb CF, Mclemore RF (Heck of an athlete) and Drew the 1st baseman. They will be young.
    • Good thing we aren’t in Florida then huh? It would benefit a ton of the smaller schools  that don’t have the pools of kids to choose from! They should start by policing Shelby County like they do the rest of the state! Something has to change though and TSSAA knows that!
    • Correct, you can whimsically be fired in coaching. A coach that has tenure can stay on as a teacher if released from coaching. If you don’t have tenure as a teacher, you can fired without cause. Your last year as a teacher before tenure is earned you can be fired, but must be given cause. A tenured teacher can be fired, but it is a long hard process requiring the 3 D’s…. documentation, documentation and documentation. I have released 3 tenured teachers, 2 with PHD’s. However, teacher contracts had and still have clauses that state you can be fired for a variety reasons re: being arrested, public drunkenness, inappropriate relationships ect.
