Will Tyler Smith go to UT now?

Actually I think there would be a good chance cause if they don't this could be a big backlash against their program something they don't need. It willlshow recruits if their is any chance the coach will leave at the end of the year not to sign with them cause they will hold you captive. Plus why would UT want a player who no longer wanted to be there? They need a fresh start and if Smith does decide to leave they need to grant him is release.

Telfair made the wrong decision and if he would have went to college could of developed into a great player and the millions would still be there. Also going to college and getting a quality education is something you can't put a price tag on.

I like it when players go to college and pass up on the NBA. On almost every occassion it makes them a better basketball player and definatley makes them more mentally and emotionally ready for the NBA. But, I did have to point out a small error in your line of thinking. You were talking about the kid getting a "free quality education" but if they player passes up on college and goes to the NBA and doesn't make it they are always able to go back to school. And, once they have signed a multi-million dollar NBA contract they no longer need a free education. If Telfair was to bust out in the NBA he would have plenty of money to go back to school get an education and start a new career.

Its called not to cut off your nose to spite your face.....Tenn would probably release him to another non-sec school, but they are not about to release him to another SEC school where he could come back to haunt them. Besides, if he did want to go to another school, he would have to sit out a year just like any other transfer....and I doubt he would want to do that.

Telfair has plenty of money as it is....you can only spend so many millions in a lifetime. Although an education would be a great thing, he can hire people to run things for him...and he always can go back to school if he busts in the nba.

How many of those players actually go back to school and get their education. Not many. You hear about one or two players every year that go back and get their degree. Not going to college right after high school is hard on anyone, especially someone who has been making millions and had no worries. It would be nice to think players would go back and get their degree but the reality is that it doesn't happen as much as it should.

I agree...I wish something could be done to keep kids in school, but thats not going to happen....I doubt he would ever go back to school, but even if he had gone to Louisville, i doubt he would of graduated anyway. He would of eventully left for the bucks, so he might as well get it now instead of worrying about getting hurt and losing it all.

Yes, but the point is they have the money to go back if they want to. They don't need a "free" education anymore. The reason so few go back is because they don't see the point in going back to college. What do you go to college to do? Answer: get a job. What do you get a job to do? Answer: make money. So you are an ex-NBA player with a multi-million dollar bank accountt. What do YOU go back to college for? The only reason would be self satisfaction and a lot of people (unfortunately) dont give a dang about the self satisfaction of having a college degree if they have millions of dollars.

Whoever the new Tennessee coach is will have to re-recruit Tyler Smith just as Jerry Green had to re-recruit Tony Harris. The person who earlier made the comment about Vincent Yarbrough being a Kevin O'Neill recruit was incorrect. Yarbrough, Ron Slay, and Marcus Haislip, the three best players at Tennessee since Wade Houston, were all Green recruits. The biggest concern for Tennessee should not be keeping Tyler Smith. They need to be concerned about keeping Chris Lofton, who will bolt if the right man is not hired.

Ok.....Green re-recruited him. O'Neill had been working on Yarbrough for 3 years prior and had signed his step-brother Del Baker which is probably the only reason Jerry Green was able to convince Yarbrough not to go to Kentucky. I think the same argument could be made for Slay and Haislip. KO was a serious recruiter! Guys leave every time there is a coaching change, no matter who you get. I don't expect this one will be any different.

Why?

Where's your outrage about tennis and golf kids going pro as young as 14? Where's the outrage about baseball players going pro out of HS for 5-figure signing bonuses?

Is there any other area where getting a 7-figure job before you graduate college is considered a bad thing?

Do any of you think that Tyler Smith would play for Pat Summitt??? She is the all-time winningest coach in NCAA history now and her name has been said to be in the mix for the opening at UT. I personally think that Tyler, Lofton, Jamont, and whoever else decides to go to UT WOULD play for her, although many would consider her hiring to be sort of a side show to put butts back in the seats. Men OR women is doesn't matter because the woman can flat out coach.

As a side note, I'm proud to say Pat Summitt is Cheatham County born and raised thumb

No doubt about it...Pat Head can coach and do it better than most men coaching today. I doubt it very seriously though that you would see her jump to the men's side. She is right where she wants to be...the top of the "Summit"

Summit is not going to be the mens coach at UT, or anywhere else.

    • A complete cultural change happened at Greeneville and the administration and community opened up their checkbooks.  What a lot of people don't know is Ballard was Zeller's OC for many years and stopped coaching for two years because Zeller and Ballard didn't see eye to eye on some things.  Zeller lead Greeneville to it's first ever Semi Final appearance in 2000 and lost 28-12 at Maryville and had them in the Quarter Finals in 2002 and 2003.  Z was a great coach but lost some control when it came to making workouts mandatory. (He learned from that Mistake and it was at LC when i coached with him.).  Z was let go going into my Senior Year and was replaced by Steve McCurry who was the one that turned the program around.  Steve had won a 4a state championship at AC Reynolds in Asheville and made the administration completely redo the weight room with new equipment, had a football period at the end of the school day to lift, started devil camp, and brought in coaches like Danny Bentley (Still the OL coach), Ballard as the OC, Cody Baugh (QB coach and still there), and even Spradlen who is Greeneville's head coach now as the DB's Coach.  McCurry only coached for two seasons at Greeneville and took a team that had a losing record the year before and finished my Senior Year making it to the Quarters and having a 10-3 record and then followed it up with a Semi Final appearance the next year with an 11-3 record and back to back conference championships.  Loved McCurry to death but the recession hit and the story i heard was he was still buying new equipment for the team that the Principal didn't authorize and his response was "I don't answer to you and only to Niswonger and Bewley" (Two huge donors).  That was it for him and they Promoted Ballard shortly after that.   Greeneville had always been relevant ever since the the late 70's under Coach Fred Sorrell's.  Since Sorrell's took over in 1977 Greeneville overall winning percentage is over 76%.  The biggest reason people might not have thought Greeneville was "Good" until Ballard was Greeneville always played up Classification wise and could never get over the hump. (When there were 3 classifications we played 3a, when it went to 5 we played 4a).  Greeneville is the largest its ever been with 953 students and where playing teams 2 or 3 times there size back in the day (I had a little over 800 kids in the school when i graduated in 2008).  Other teams always would know they would be sore after a game but depth took over and never won a Championship until Greeneville played in the classification the TSSAA actually assigned them. You had names like Dustin Moore (1993 Mr Football for 3a and who Phillip Fulmer said was one of the greatest athletes he ever recruited), James "Mud Turtle" Mayes, Brigham Lyons, Byron Gillespie, Frankie Debusk (National Champion Qb at Furman with GQ), Jasmine Lowery, Cody Baugh, The Greenway Brothers, Joe Watson (Furman), etc.  Now the cultural is from the Pee Wee league up and you grow up as a young kid wanting to wear the Greene and White.  Here is a really good link when it comes to anything Greeneville Football related. https://greenevillefootball.com/   I also don't coach anymore.  Z told me i was to smart with how the school systems are ran these days and ended up going into real estate in Knoxville which has been a great decision for my life.
    • Yes, they will. I'm wondering what kinds of strides Sale Creek will make heading into the second season under Coach Fitz.
    • No yellow stripes on the rug last night. Biggest crowd I’ve seen at 825 since the alco debacle.
    • I know most Pirate starters were seniors last year. Im not sure how accurate it is but someone said we only have 3 seniors. That Prep team will probably make some noise this coming season too.
