So who are the top players at South Pittsburg this season? Who is eligible, who is back or still at SP?

Antonio Robinson will be a good one at WR.

Cody Robinson looked good at QB last year when he came in. Directed the offense pretty well and he seemed to have a good arm and good knowledge of the field and what was going on around him.

Robert Robinson (I think they are going to rename the team the South Pittsburg Robinson's for this season) was good at RB last year when he came in but has been moved to fullback from what I hear and Arland Matthews will be at the Tailback position this year. Very athletic, let's just hope that the year off didn't hurt.

The biggest questions in my mind are on the offensive line and the defensive front seven. Their play in the trenches last year was bad at times and if it is no better this year it will be very difficult in a few games. They have some people coming up though to help out in all areas from the great junior high team they had but these guys will just be freshmen.

Over all they should be much improved from last season with plenty of skill players. It is all going to depend on the line.

Hey drunkensailor, I think you seem to know your stuff and your assessment is fair and postive, thanks. Tell me about the kid you said would be quarterback, his is the only name I did not recognize. Has he played before? Can he get the ball to the big man, or is he more of a runner?

Cody Robinson came in a few times last year to relieve Jeremy Allison at QB. Allison played most of last season on a gimpy ankle (and played his heart out it seemed) but there were a couple of times he had to come out. Robinson came in and directed the offense pretty well. He played the whole second half against Lookout Valley when Allison went down to go along with a few other "relief" roles. Now I know coming in against Lookout Valley isn't exactly throwing the kid to the wolves but still he was a freshman with no high school game experience. He was able to make real good throws. Very accurate on the short and medium passes. He didn't appear to be much of a runner but then after watching Allison (who was the fastest player on the team) I think it is unfair to judge Robinson's speed in a comparison. I'll just say he seemed to have decent feet. He looked like he fit the mold more of a passer than anything. So yes, I think he can get the ball to the big man as well as spread it around to the others as well.

I will say this about him, coach Grider put his confidence into the kid as a freshman. He didn't completely change the plan to protect him. Instead he had him running the offense and firing the ball downfield on 4th down plays. I am anxious to watch him play as a starter.

There are some unknowns about this team this year but there are a lot of reasons for excitement as well. The passing game could be part of that excitement.

That was a very insightful piece of information.Drunken Sailor, do you know anymore about South Pittsburg?

Not a lot really. Anything I have is just speculation from the way I remember things shaking out from last season and from second -and sometimes third - hand info.

I'm just glad that I formed the post in a way that made it look like I am more knowledgeable than I actually am

    • I will never forget the 1983 Heritage vs Maryville game. I remember driving home and listening to WGAP. Can't remember the announcers name. He asked Coach Story why he kept going for 2? Story told him " Why didn't you ask Renfro that last year"
    • TSSAA will let them all go to Mase.
    • Well nothing new, the Mustangs are really talented again this coming season!  They very well could go undefeated in regular season.  We shall see what happens in postseason.  I think the path to state title game is a little clearer than years past.  I think the Stangs are going to be really good and I think the traditional teams around in 2A are not going to be as strong.  It should be a fun season!
    • I would not put too much stock into the UH over Eagleville. From what I understand they were pretty banged up in that tourney. Catcher was out, they were throwing pretty deep in their bullpen and a few key players were beat up in their infield. Sounds like they are pretty healthy heading into the district tournament. Look at their schedule, they played some really good teams.
