Should Maryville and Melrose move up?

mlreb,

Not offended, not taking a jab at murville. They are a class program with a class coaching staff. And I have been around their players and they also have class. Murville's fans that I know and talk to also fit into this equation.

Not meaning to take a jab, just extremely jealous.

Good luck to the rebs in all games except one, my beloved debils, but I don;t think the debils will be able to do much this year. Hopefully, within the next 3,4,5,6, years we will be able to get better.

According to coachT Oak Ridge has 1460 students. Maryville has 1351. Riverdale has 1734. Math tells me 109 students seperate OR and Mville. Would love to see OR and Mville play sooner than when the class changes. But, we will all have to wait. As Oak Ridge numbers decline and Mville numbers expand we will never know what would have been.

According to the handbook, Maryville is a little bit shy of the 5A mark if they have 1,351 students. It says schools with an enrollment of 984 to 1,357 is 4A.

CountryBoy,

How many teams in our Region 1 4A are playing up in classification?

I know Elizabethton is, but they are doing that for the competition.

Sullivan North is playing up for financial reasons.

What about Johnson Co. and Unicoi Co.?

If that handbook is correct, I'm pretty sure that Sullivan East is playing up as well.

Unicoi County has around 900 if you can believe it. Johnson County is playing up for financial reasons. North and East both have over 1000 so they fit just right in 4A. I think Eliz. doesn't want to move down because they might lose some money playing lower teams.

900! That's crazy! I would have guessed that they had about 400. :D

You would think Eliz. has more students than Unicoi. But there is 5 schools in Carter County and 1 in Unicoi County.

What source has Melrose near the 4A limit? Both CoachT and TSSAA.org don't show numbers near 1400. Also Melrose plays several 5A teams every year anyway plus 6A power from Missouri.

If a team is within the boundaries of a classification, there is no controversy. That's what the classifications are for. Maryville is within the parameters of the 4A classification. Period.

You are right OMW. It`s kind of a senseless thread if you ask me. Melrose and Maryville are 4A schools....PERIOD! There`s too many sour grapes when schools do well.

Once again, I shall repeat myself for the people that obviously can't read. I have no sour grapes about the topic I started. Maybe you shouldn't get on here and say some of the things you say Vol.General. It was just a topic thought I hear a lot about.

OK, Wasn't the whole 7 class system designed to make football competitive, I think it is very balanced. I'm not a Maryville or Melrose fan but both have great programs, excellent coaching, community support and great athletes (especially Melrose!) to compete at any level. These are teenagers who love to play the game so quite bashing them or trying to downplay their success!

I'm no Maryville fan, and I've argued the point about classifications, but I bet this is getting old to them.

They are where they are, through no fault of theirs. We wouldn't even be having this conversation if they hadn't won so many championships in the last few years.

Heck, Melrose get's to one championship and everybody wants them to move up. What about Hillsboro, they had been to three straight before last year.

The fact is they are 4A if they chose to move, great if not then they don't have to.

I think that everyone should worry about who's in their classification and win it instead of worrying about who's in Maryvilles.

Bottom line is in each classification you have teams at the bottom and at the top, no matter how you align them, you're alway going to have that. Let's play devil advacate, if they move up, then they would be at the bottom, and if they didn't win (I think they could hold their own) then everybody would say see I told you so. But how would that be fair, Riverdale would still have 1000 more students. Now we are back at the same point.

So as long as their are sports fans, their are going to be critics (arm chair quarterbacks).

I'm know coach Stevens at Oak Ridge and he has a lot of respect for Maryville and Coach Quarles. From what he's told me, Maryville is deserving of all of their success and would be successful whether they are 4A or 5A.

    • They’ve both gotten worse. I’ve seen enough games to know that.
    • The only two transfers that Bearden has gotten that went on to play college football were a defensive back from Karnes, who transferred here way before the new coaching staff got here, and a running back from Carter, who went on to play at Maryville College. Both players received those offers while at Bearden, and both players got a diploma from Bearden High School. Therefore, they are Bearden kids, and you can’t do anything about that.   The transfer from Seymour didn’t win the job, what do you expect two quarterbacks to start at the same time? He played great on JV when he could stay healthy, and when he came in on varsity, he did great. The quarterback position is definitely going to be in good hands when the current starting quarterback leaves, but until then, they’re just going to be battling it out like every good quarterback competition does. The current starting quarterback has his flaws, and that is in the pass game, but what he doesn’t have flaws is running and scrambling, and if you go back and watch any game, which I’m sure you didn’t watch any, we used him very often, and when we needed a deep ball, we brought in the transfer from Seymour. The starting quarterback last year will be a senior this year, and the Seymour transfer will be a junior, so the Seymour transfer is definitely going to get his spotlight. He may even win the job this year. Football isn’t about who the newspaper thinks is the best kid. The best kid in the position will win the starting job, and I trust the coaching staff more than a newspaper or article to pick my starting QB.
    • I mean, we’ve only gotten two transfers that went on to play college football, one who went to UT Martin came his second semester junior year before the new coaching staff was here, and the other one went on to play at Maryville College, in which I don’t believe he had any interest prior to transferring.
    • An FYI: To see how an opponent has done against another opponent since 2001- go to the game by clicking on one of the teams. Click the G beside the game. For example, Milan: The info will show you the previous matchups and other info.
    • All these college signees went yo other schools for 3 years, were getting college offers then transferred to Bearden. It’s not like this staff did much to develop them.    The BBall coaches son and the Seymour transfer were some of the most talented QBs in the region, and you guys developed them into QBs who might complete one pass a game.
