I have seen some reds cards that have resulted in a ban and fine, yet I have seen others where there was no ban or fine, and the team just had to play with 10 men. Is there an offical rule for this or is it a indiviual choice for the ref?

This is from the TSSAA handbook http://www.tssaa.org/Handbook/handbook.pdf

Section 7. Student Athletes Ejected for Unsportsmanlike Conduct in Any Sport

A. In contests in which registered TSSAA officials are involved, the officials will immediately notify the state office with both a telephone call and a written report if players are ejected for unsportsmanlike conduct. In soccer, this would be for a RED CARD ONLY. In sports where registered TSSAA officials are not used, it will be the responsibility of the principal and/or coach of the player involved to report this incident to the state office.

B. On the ejection of a student athlete, the school will be required to submit a report on the action of the player and any disciplinary action taken by the school. The minimum penalty will be the suspension of the student athlete from participation in the next contest(s) at the level of competition for the specified number of contests played during a week in the particular sport (one game in soccer and football, two contests in all other sports). In addition, the student athlete is also suspended from participation in the same number of contest(s) at any other level of competition in the same sport.

C. In addition to what is presently required when a player is ejected for unsportsmanlike conduct, a meeting shall be held with the player, coach, principal, and parent(s) or guardian(s) with a report on the meeting and plans to directly address the matter to be filed with the state office.

D. If a player is ejected for a second time for unsportsmanlike conduct, a more severe punishment shall be imposed.

E. Other non-monetary penalties may be assessed by the Executive Director based on all the facts.

Section 8. Substitutes Leaving Bench Area in an Incident or Fans Coming Onto the Field or Floor

A. The school will be required to submit a report and video tape if available. All schools are instructed to inform individuals taping to continue taping all incidents.

B. For substitutes leaving the bench area in an incident or fans coming onto the field or floor, the school will be fined a minimum of $250.00. In addition, other non-monetary disciplinary action will occur.

Section 9. Coaches Ejected for Unsportsmanlike Conduct

A. The school and coach will be required to submit a written report of the incident.

B. The school will be given a choice of removing the coach for a specified number of contest(s) and pay a fine of $250.00 or face further disciplinary action. The school shall not allow the suspended coach to attend games while under suspension.

C. In addition to what is presently required when a coach is ejected for unsportsmanlike conduct, a meeting shall be held with the coach, principal, and superintendent, or his/her appointed representative, with a report on the meeting and plans to directly address the matter to be filed with the state office by the principal.

D. On any subsequent ejection by the same coach, the school will be given a choice of removing the coach for a specified number of contest(s) and pay a fine of $500.00 or face further disciplinary action. The school shall not allow the suspended coach to attend games while under suspension.

E. Other non-monetary penalties may be assessed by the Executive Director based on all the facts.

Section 10. Appeals

Any appeal request regarding the ejection of players or coaches shall be submitted in writing from the administrator of the school, stating which playing rule was misapplied. It should be accompanied by $50.00. If the appeal is granted, the $50.00 will be returned to the school.

Forfeitures

Section 11. All rulings on eligibility must be in writing, and the accidental, intentional or other use of ineligible players by a member school shall require that team victories in which the ineligible player participated are forfeited to opponents; and any one or more of these additional actions may be taken:

(a) That individual or team records and performances achieved during participation by such ineligibles be vacated or stricken;

(

B) That team or individual awards earned by such ineligibles be returned to the TSSAA; and

© That a fine for the playing of an ineligible player be assessed against the school, if deemed necessary.

Section 12. If a team is removed from competition, the school shall be fined $500.00, and the school shall face disciplinary action by TSSAA. Other non-monetary penalties may be assessed by the Executive Director based on the facts.

Section 13. If the coach is ejected from the contest and an assistant coach or full-time employee of the board of education that possesses a teacher's certificate and is assigned as a school representative is not available to continue as coach, the event is terminated and forfeited to the opponent.

Section 14. If a student is ineligible according to TSSAA rules but is permitted to participate in interscholastic competition contrary to such TSSAA rules but in accordance with the terms of a court restraining order or injunction against his/her school and/or the TSSAA, and that injunction is subsequently voluntarily vacated, stayed, reversed or finally determined by the courts that injunctive relief is not or was not justified or expires without further judicial determination, those actions stipulated in Section 15 shall be taken.

Section 15. If an ineligible contestant competes in a meet, match or tournament and any violation of TSSAA rules occurs, all points earned by that student, or by a relay team of which he/she may have been a member, in that meet or tournament are to be declared forfeited; and in team sports (baseball, basketball, football, girls soccer, soccer, girls softball and girls volleyball) the entire contest is forfeited.

The penalty for playing an ineligible contestant shall be $50.00 per contest at the varsity level and $25.00 per contest below the varsity level, with a maximum fine of $250.00, provided it is voluntarily reported by the school, which is in violation, to the Executive Director. If it is not voluntarily reported by the school to the Executive Director, the penalty shall be $100.00 per contest at the varsity level and $50.00 per contest below the varsity level. Other non-monetary penalties may be assessed by the Executive Director based on all the facts.

As I understand it, a "soft" red (second yellow) is still a red card, but there is no TSSAA suspension beyond the current game. In other words, you play 10 for the rest of the game but all players are eligible for the next game.

A "hard" red (no yellows, just a red card) is more in line with most sports' ejections and thus carries the mandatory one game suspension. That is, you play 10 for the rest of the game and the carded player misses the next game (but you play 11 the next game).

Many coaches and/or schools will assign their own suspensions for unacceptable behavior that results in an ejection.

the soft red happened to us 3 times last year and we were able to sub the player

You can sub after a yellow. It's a relatively new rule that a yellow carded player has to leave the game at all. (Relatively meaning ten years or so).

A red card requires the team to finish the game short. Be that a straight red or a second yellow to the same player.

I'm aware of at least one team that finished a game with 8 players last year -- two soft reds and one hard red. Only one TSSAA suspension was issued after that game.

This is not right. A couple of years ago I received a "soft" red in a district semifinal game in which we lost. We were able to sub, but since there were no other soccer games, I had to sit out the next TSSAA santioned sport which was our first football game!

Cant say for sure but your school must have done this and not TSSAA. They are two seperate sports, I dont see how they could keep you out of football for what happened in soccer. Also a soft red does not have next game suspension. Only a straight red does. So two yellows and your out for that game and can sub in a player. Straight red and you are out for that game and at least the next, school can add more time if they choose to.
