I was also at the Page tournament. Your comment in 2 above, about someone screaming right before contact, was EXACTLY what "The Firm" was doing. It is also worth mentioning that the ref at the time I saw and heard this happening was the one that is deaf (Tim, I think). He warned the coach to make them stop because our captain told him what they were doing. She walked over and made a comment to the boys "I guess they want to play this like a tennis match so we better be quiet." But the look she gave them said "Make all the noise you want to" because she knew he couldn't hear them continuing. In the next match, at least one of them was made to leave the gym. Our girls are used to noise at a match, but yelling out suddenly right as a serve is being made, is wrong! You wouldn't allow it tennis or golf, so it shouldn't be allowed in volleyball. Continuous noise is one thing, but not this. Show some sportsmanship.

How about a free throw in basketball? Yes. Gte real. That is part of the sport.

Catuballer,

I'm all for the kids having fun and burning off all that teen angst and energy BUT....

there should be a clearly defined and accceptable limit to behavior weather at a sporting event or anywhere else. When it becomes disruptive and obnoxious, it is time to rein it in. Or should we all just act like fools??

"Home Field Advantage" at least as I understand the term, means that the home team is comfortable in their home environment. They know the quirks of their field/court, the team is relaxed because they didn't have to travel, they see faces they know. Those things give them an advantage. I DOESN'T mean that the visiting team is expected to take on the whole school and everything they can think up.

And you MUST be kidding with the "well they do it over there...even worse" statement. Even you can see the pitfalls of that line of reasoning.

Let the competition be between your team and my team..and let it get a fierce as it wants within the rules....don't let intentional outside influences affect the outcome.

It really is ok to have expectations of reasonable behavior. In fact, a stable, rational society requires it.

Can't disagree more. Sports are sports. Home team advantage is everything you said, plus the fact that you have the advantage of a bigger louder obnoxious crowd.

Or you could be with us at Ooltewah last week with 250 fans with a funeral home noise level as both teams mange to hit 8 serves in a row into the net or out of bounds.

I suggest everyone teach their players how to serve.

And a big AMEN to this one...poor serving is my hot button /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

I was also present for the Page event. Didn't have a problem at all with the kids yelling. Loved the enthusiasm! Need more of it! I can attest to GLJ's efforts to manage the non-player distractions, he did a fine job, as per his usual. I was more disappointed in the parents that became so angry they began stepping onto the court as the player was trying to serve. Anytime you've got a tournament setting where there are 2 nets on one gym, there's limited space on at least one endline, if not both. There were some things that went on there from some parents that were just incredible.

As a golfer and a tennis player, I can understand the distraction on the serve, but why is the serve any different from an attack, set, or pass? Are we saying it's ok to distract then, but just not the serve? That seems silly to me. I don't think the players hear much out there anyway. If they can't hear me yell, "Out!" when they are standing on the end line about to take the ball with their hands, they can't hear anything.

Making noise on the serve (from the crowd) is no different than making noise while attempting a free throw. It's allowed in college and internationally. I believe that personal insults have no place in "supporting your team", but make all the noise you want on the serve. I've never seen a high school player or above worth her salt get so rattled by a crowd noise on serve that she missed every serve she attempted.

Are you telling me that if we make noise during the serve the player may hit the ball out of bounds or into the net. Have you ever been to Big South or the national qualifer in Indianapolis with 100 courts in one room, 100 refs blowing whistles non-stop on these courts, 200 sets of fans cheering for their teams non stop, 300 college coaching staffs present evaluating every move these kids make and they can serve the ball despite this!

The bottom half of this quote is so funny and true!!! Noise or no noise the players have got to get out there and let their experience on the court take over and just show themselves they can perform under pressure, separating the really good teams from the REALLY GREAT ones!!! They have to believe they can do it and they CAN!!! Serving is so mental. Like the NIKE ad says...JUST DO IT

i guess my comment would be...where is the administration? coaches coach! unless they want to pay them (coaches) administrative salaries! /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" />

Our administration is on hand for our games at Central, just in case! I think that we might be the exception, though. Most of the time, if the fans are made aware of the rules regarding cheering, they comply. If not, our principal escorts them out. It's nice to have that kind of support and makes for a truly exciting atmosphere.
