If I had a pick of all the players from the Mr. Football finalist, Rodriguez Wilks would have been the first. He has the gift of talent many dream about. To win it at receiver says something as most Mr. Football awards go to QB or RB. He will be exciting player to watch at UT next few years if UT gets a QB throwing a pass more than 20 yards downfield with decent accuracy.

No offense to Rod Wilks who is an excellent player, but I beilieve it is unfair to a kid like Andre Sterling not to win the 5a Mr. Football Award, to see what he did this season and for him to not win the award is just unbelievable. If you look at Wilks's stats from last year he improved by a few tds and about one hundred yards and was not a finalist last year, whereas Sterling was the runner up last year and his stats are way higher than last year and then to come in this year and not win, just a disgrace. This award is not about where people have commited or what they have done previously in their careers. Just because Wilks was the MVP of the State Championship last year or that he was an early commitment to UT doesn't mean he is better. I think that the middle tennessee voters put their blindfolds on from the get-go and had their choice at the beginning of the season.

THE FIRST OF THREE TD PASS THAT YOU ARE REFERRING TO JSUT SO HAPPENED TO BE THE ONE WHERE THE SULLIVAN SOUTH CORNER BROKE HIS COVERAGE AND BROKE ON THE QB AND LEFT THE RECIEVER OPEN BY A MERE 20 YARDS. Once again we are not refering to the game between sullivan and maryville. We are discussing a CLASS 4A MR FOOTBALL in the "back" gategory. Any one else with any reasoning????

Thank you! Would the corner break on the QB because he was in the pocket? I doubt it! Probaly because the pocket passer you referenced had scrambled out of the pocket! The position of "Quarterback" regardless is in the "back" category!

i knew that there were going to be a lot of disappointed people, no matter who won. after watching friday nights maryville/SS game, i told my friend who i was with, one of those kids is going to get shafted on the mr. football award on momday, regardless of who wins it. (i stated way back when that phillips would be hurt greatly by the fact that he was from upper ET-- but i am not going to get into a demographics arguement, as it will go nowhere fast). however i CANNOT argue with giving the award to burnette. these kids are both the real deal, and both appear to be great guys from an outsiders prospective.

5A

sterling was one of the best HS backs i have seen in a LONG time and i am looking forward to seeing Wilkes this weekend to make a comparison of my own. one thing that must be noted, a WR will almost never have stats that rival a RB's, they just dont get enough touches. that being said, sterling's stats don't lie, he put up some of the biggest numbers in the history of the state, and did not play too many games where his duties were needed the entire game (not sure about wilkes, someone with that info?)... i am not saying sterling should have won, but his stats count for something-- very few voters would have the opportunity to see all the candidates and stats play a huge role in their decisions i'm guessing. i also like part of ktownman's argument, sterling was a finalist last year and still. somehow, made vast improvements on his game and stats. i cannot speak intelligently about wilkes' stats last year, but i know he was not a finalist and did not make the improvement in stats from what i understand.

congrats to the winners as well as the finalists. just being a finalist is an honor in itself.

sidenote: "to the winners go the spoils" comment is completely off base. if i am not mistaken, voting ended on oct. 31, which would only include the regular season.

They might as well go ahead and change the name of the award to Middle Tennessee Mr. Football, because if you are from East Tennessee it would appear that you are automatically disqualified. There is no other way to explain why Andre Sterling was not voted as the winner of this award other than the fact that more of the voters are from Middle Tennessee and completely biased toward candidates that are in their local area. Andre Sterling deserved this award based on what was done on the field and it wasn't even arguably close !!! The stats speak for themeselves, as the 4th best season rushing in TSSAA all time HISTORY ! If that can't win it for an East Tennessee player then nothing will.

Congratulations to ALL the nominees and winners. If nothing else you have made watching HS football something that is still fun to watch.

LaDarius, I got to talk to the 'Clone' for a couple of minutes last night and told him about it and he asked me to tell you Congratulations from him. So, CONGRATULATIONS! /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" />

The stats they use are from the regular season only, but still Sterling had over 2000yds and over 20TDs..

another thing. You guys can make fun of me all you want, but I still don't think a WR should count as a back. It is too hard to compare stats for the two. a WR is WR.. .completely different than being a running back. They should not be in the same category...

Sterling should have won this award easily. I think alot had to do with Rod having committed somewhere and Sterling hasn't.

I agree on several of your points.

1. W.R. isn't a back. Last year Maples was a D.B. / W.R. and won it.

2. Sterling definately had the stats to win the award.

3. Rod having signed with the large Orange was a factor. Also Symrna is playing deeper in the play offs. Burnette hasn't signed and won the 4-A award. He like Sterling may not be a D I player but both are exceptional High School Players.

There is alot that goes into picking the winners of these awards. How good their team is, stats, politics, who they have signed with, etc... Because awards like the Mr. Football is so subjective we can only be happy for the winners and disappointed for those who could have easily chosen for the award.

What category should WR's be put into? Or do you just want to leave them out and not recognize them. Personally, I think they should change the category's name to Skill position. They have the "Lineman" award, but they include Line"Backers" in that one. Do you think that is fair? Or are you just griping because the argument fits for your player to win.

Plain and simple..... Rod Wilks IS the best football player (non-lineman) in the state of Tennessee in the 5A classification. Taking nothing away from what Sterling did, but did he play ANY defense.....special teams? I think that aspect is getting lost in all of this. People are only looking at offensive stats. Rod is a COMPLETE football player. He rarely comes off the field. Returning kicks, punt team, you name it.... the only thing I don't remember seeing him play is kick off coverage, which I know he did last year.

As somebody said earlier, the stats are not all that is voted on. It is about their academics and how they carry themselves as people. I cannot imagine a more deserving recipient than Mr. Wilks. Congratulation.

    • Did this happen? Does anyone know? Ripley has their HC job posted on the bulletin board over the weekend.
    • Coalfield definitely isn't the same team they've had the past few years. They are still the favorites to make it out of their region because of their pitching. They have 1 arm that sits low to mid 80s and 2 other arms that are mid to high 70s with good off speed stuff. If you can avoid their top 3 bats in their lineup then you have a shot to beat them. Their 4-9 hitters are average at best. Wartburg's ace was able to shut them down last week in the game Wartburg won 4-2.
    • It is the longest season. Plus, 30 games a year. No Christmas break. I would say basketball is the most time consuming.
