Poor scheduling??? OK...this is real confusing to me. Out of one side of your mouth some DB fans say you didn??™t like this game being scheduled and Coach Morgan ???scheduled this game all for HIMSELF???. And then out of the other side you say that the same problem exists in bball that exists in fball with the local competition not being strong enough to prepare the Indians for a State run, and that Coach Morgan should schedule more out of conference games. /blink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="blink.gif" />

If you ask me this ???wakeup call??? couldn??™t have come at a better time. What better time to realize that you haven??™t ???made it to the mountain top??? then two games before Districts with an out of conference team in which the loss doesn??™t count against a perfect conference record. I bet the Patriots wish the wakeup call would have come for them before yesterday??™s game. /huh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="huh.gif" /> I think this merely serves as a refocus point for the Tribe. And DBgrad Maryville didn't beleive the hype of those mythical "big west teams" last year, so why should DB be any different. /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" />

I don??™t know why I??™m always defending DB coaches against DB fans, but right is right and wrong is wrong. Coach Morgan is ALL ABOUT DB BASKETBALL and the constant betterment thereof. It??™s a shame when you bring your team to this point in the season with 21 wins and only 3 losses and people sill have the audacity to question your motives for scheduling an out of conference game!??? That??™s wrong!!

Hey, wait a minute. Did I blame Morgan for the loss? Others did but I only partially blamed the schedule, not Morgan. He may have had a hand in the schedule but that doesn't make him guilty of causing the loss. I didn't see or hear the game so I have no idea what role Morgan had in the loss.

I am saying a weak schedule until too late in the season is a problem. It has been a problem in football too. And I'm not talking about just DB. I'm talking about all of the members of the Weak9. Every team needs to get out and toughen up with the likes of Salem and Knoxville teams - earlier in the season. Maybe Waco is right. Some of the coaches need to be replaced. I know 1 AD that needs to be replaced. One would think that the coaches would recognize the problem that the Weak9 has and get together and come up with a plan to strengthen it. But I guess that is just too much to hope for. Wouldn't you like to see the Weak9 morph into the Big 9 again?

The only problem that I personally have with the scheduled time of the Salem game was that it was 1 day after a conference game and I think high school kids need a minimum of 1 day rest between games. Sorry I wasn't more clear about that.

And you may be right. A little motivation at this point may be helpful. But a little motivation a couple of weeks ago would have provided more time to evaluate and make changes.

I think Charlie Morgan is a good coach, but not the type coach that will ever make DB competitive at the state level. Everyone in this area that has seen DB play knows the athletes, size and depth that they have this year. When you have a group like this there are no excuses for losing the way they did Saturday. They were totally unprepared. So who is in charge of getting the team prepared? Look, the rest of the state has been making fun of us for several years. We have the athletes up here to compete. George Pitts proved that. Ever since his exit what has happened? There are NO coaches in this area that can compete on the state level. The proof is in the pudding.

Another thing, this 2 platoom thing that Morgan runs is cool and everything, everybody gets to play and you can beat the weaker teams using it. I know that there are 5 players on DB's team that are better than the rest. When you go up against a team like Hidden Valley, or any of the top 6 teams in Knoxville you better have your best players on the court for as much of the game as possible. If you have your best players playing only half the game your going to get blown out.

I really don't understand why you schedule a road game 4 hours away, less than 24 hours after a conference game. These aren't NBA players. In my opinion, there was nothing to be gained and everything to lose by scheduling this game this way. DB had all the momentum as they attempt the finish the Big 9 with a perfect record. Now they are going into the Science Hill game and the conference tournament with their confidence shaken. Can anybody explain it to me?

Are we serious here?

First off, it shouldn't take 4 hours to get to Salem, Va. Second I would ask, is the main goal to go undefeated in the Big 9 conference and be the best team in Region1 and not know where you need to improve or is the main goal to get a dose of reality and realize what it takes to be playing the best basketball going into post season? Because they will see far better teams than they just played just trying to get to state (Oak Ridge, Maryville, Bearden, etc). And then IF they get to state, they would be playing top notch competition on 3 consecutive days! That's back-to-back-to-back...not playing a AA Virginia team less than 24 hours after playing a weak conference foe. Come on, these aren't NBA players but there should be no problem for a high school kid to get on a bus and travel down the road to play a basketball game and not use that as an excuse for losing. They got there butts handed to them but they also got to play in a similar environment to a state tournament and also got to see 2 state championship teams that THIS coach was responsible for. This SHOULD motivate them to a) see that they have not arrived, and b)see what can be accomplished with effort (i.e. a state tournament). But hey, if you only want this team to beat up on the Sullivans and win a conference crown then you won't be dissappointed with this season. But it's obvious there is work to be done for this team to be crowned "best around here in a while" and we'll see if the heart is there to step it up. But going to DB games for years and witnessing the "ho-hum wait-til-next-year" attitude of the crowds, I am increasingly beinning to wonder what it the heart of the program? At football games I see the players emploring the fans to get up and give them a home field advantage but nothing...oh but they almost break there arms clapping when the tuba player comes on the field. And at basketball games, most are busy getting caught up on all the gossip while they are threatening fans that do get up and yell to sit down or they will tell an officer you are bothering them. But you're right, it's all the coaches fault. I think Eddie Durham nailed it, he commented last year after another golf flop that the attitude is on cars and clothes and not hard work to get better. An attitude that if I put on the maroon and grey, the opponent will crumble before me. So make a spot for another conference championship trophy and be satisfied with another "successful" season. I won't be satisfied and it wont be Charlie Morgan's fault.

IF they go to state, they will not get a day's rest between games. 3 games in 3 days.

I'm not sure there is any coach that can make DB competitive at a state level. We lured Buck Van Huss away who had won a state title at Hampton....zero for DB. We lured away Ted Wilson from Maryville where he had won 3 championships in football....zero at DB. We lured away Mike Ritz from North where he had won 2 baseball championships...zero at DB. Those are 3 of the best ever in the state but it never equated to a title in any of the 3 main sports at DB. I honestly don't think the heart is there in the athletes to move to the top...they don't want to work to get there. I sit in the stands at football, basketball, baseball and unless the band plays there is no fire in the fans either. But hey, everybody keep paying your taxes because we need that turf and field house....to get better you know? /wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

That was quite a blitz. I agree with most of that, but not all. You could be on to something.

I guess it has just gotten too frustrating to be in the stands of a football game and see the kids on the sideline waving there arms during a crucial 3rd down for the opponent trying to get the crowd to make noise and the stands be quiet other than swapping gossip with the neighbors. But when the clarinet player squeeks off a note they almost soil themselves. Or at a basketball game trying to give the kids some sort of home court advantage in dome (and give the refs a little help /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />) and have a DB fan tell me they will have an officer move me unless I hush...they just want to golf clap for Timmy and visit with there neighbors and say my little Timmy had a great game but those other kids played awful.

Is Timmy going to be Mr. basketball this year? lol /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" /> Good post and when going to DB games , i am really shocked at no fan support. Most schools in this district would love to have the team DB has to cheer them on. O and maroonandgrey take the kids cell phones away so they cant text, that might help.

DB fans/students travel well and at home show up in numbers but there aint much fire. I guess they are afraid to get into the games or they will be ejected as a couple were at South Friday night. By the way, what is up with Compton at South? He obviously has a chip on his shoulder about DB because the ref came over and pointed to someone that had "criticized" the ref and they tossed a couple of DB kids and Compton was jawing with the kids for some time and then patrolled the DB sidelines for the rest of the game almost daring somebody from the DB side to "criticize" an official. I think there is something there because HE (not the DB A.D. as was the myth some tried to spread) was also responsible for cancelling the DB/South football series and there were many excuses given to why it was done (and most have proven bogus). The critics were just as many on both sides of the arena (as is the case in any game) but he chose to mix it up with the DB students. I smell collusion between him and the refs because it wasn't long into the game that the ref pointed out the 2 kids (one of which hadn't made a peep by the way) and had them escorted out and made the announcement that "criticizing the officials would not be tolerated". Interesting, that is the first time I have ever heard that rule. So everyone has been warned from this point forward.

    • Did this happen? Does anyone know? Ripley has their HC job posted on the bulletin board over the weekend.
    • Coalfield definitely isn't the same team they've had the past few years. They are still the favorites to make it out of their region because of their pitching. They have 1 arm that sits low to mid 80s and 2 other arms that are mid to high 70s with good off speed stuff. If you can avoid their top 3 bats in their lineup then you have a shot to beat them. Their 4-9 hitters are average at best. Wartburg's ace was able to shut them down last week in the game Wartburg won 4-2.
    • It is the longest season. Plus, 30 games a year. No Christmas break. I would say basketball is the most time consuming.
