Combination Plan

I’m going to throw out a revision of my original plan… COMMON PLAN, we will call this the COMBINATION PLAN. Although I like my other plan better, this one may be more acceptable to you private school supporters; however, I fear it will not be enjoyed by the larger public school coaches. Nevertheless, here we go:

Right now we have 8 classifications (5 DI and 3 DII). Under this plan we would combine all teams back into one Division (non-financial aid private schools have a multiplier of 1.50, and all financial aid private schools use 2.0 with a limit of total scholarships for all sports) and create 6 classes of teams as follows (numbers may vary; remember without regions, it doesn’t matter how many teams are in a class):

CLASS A – 359 students or less

CLASS AA – 360-599

CLASS AAA- 600-849

CLASS AAAA-850-1039

CLASS AAAAA1040-1449

CLASS AAAAAA (Super Schools Class) 1450-UP

Base Plan:

Each team plays 10 regular season games (Weeks 1-10)

* Each team selects 8 games to count toward the playoffs

* 50% of the 10 games must be within a teams classification.

* Playoff Teams are selected using a mathematical formula to be approved and managed by a PLAYOFF COMMITTEE (selected from TSSAA Member Schools to include Coaches, Administrators, Mathematical Statisticians).

* Formula to take into consideration:

A. Teams Classification

B. Opponents Classification

C. Teams Win/Loss Percentage

D. Opponents Win/Loss Percentage

E. Common Opponents Win/Loss Percentage

F. Other Factors to be determined

* All teams not selected for the playoffs can participate in a single invitational bowl game during weeks 11 or 12 if they win at least 3 regular season games. Each team will receive a pre-determined amount (percentage of gate or set remuneration) for participation in any bowl game.

* The Committee will select 32 teams in each class to be divided as follows:

* West Bracket - TOP 16 Teams

* East Bracket - TOP 16 Teams

* Team Playoff (EAST/WEST BRACKETS) as follows:

* WEEK 11- GAMES

A. 1-16

B. 2-15

C. 3-14

D. 4-13

E. 5-12

F. 6-11

G. 7-10

E. 8-9

* WEEK 12 - GAMES

Winner of Game A Plays the Winner of Game E

Winner of Game B Plays the Winner of Game G

Winner of Game C Plays the Winner of Game F

Winner of Game D Plays the Winner of Game E

* WEEK 13 - GAMES

Winner of Game A/E plays the Winner of D/E

Winner of Game B/G plays the Winner of C/F

* WEEK 14 - GAMES

EAST CHAMPIONSHIP GAME - Knoxville, or Chattanooga?

WEST CHAMPIONSHIP GAME - UT Martin, or University-Memphis?

Week 15 – STATE CHAMPIONSHIP BOWL at MTSU in Murfreesboro

Here are the classifications under the Combination plan. There are probably some errors (I may have left a school out or added one that doesn't have football). REMEMBER, since we have done away with regions... these classes will only effect who you play in the playoffs! The numbers are based on the most recent numbers posted on the TSSAA website and there are three or four new schools that we had to guess on! BA always moves up on their own so we put them in class 6A.

Some schools can be moved up or down based on several factors, but it will only effect the playoffs, not during the regular season!

One error. You typoed on the enrollment for ECS, which would be quad-A, not the hex-A class you have them in. I think Baylor would also move up.

Still, I'm not so sure about the choose-8-games aspect, both from the mathematical aspects and because I fear teams throwing games that the other team is counting but they are not. Still, though, this basic plan looks like a good one to me.

How would this work for other sports? My suggestion would be to essentially keep the current Division I plan, applying the appropriate multipliers to private schools. I would end the presumption that all A-AA sports must not only have the same districts/regions, but that they must exactly match the AA alignment...

I love this plan but, like you said, I'm afraid the bigger schools would cry foul. It may be hard for some of the better 1a schools to get a schedule that's fairly close by. People in this area don't particularly like playing us, but hey you can't have everything.

I think the numbers are off...by a lot.

St. Benedict would be classified as 4A!

You have to be kidding me! They have right at the amount of kids Harding Academy has...and Harding has beaten them 4 years in a row by over 30 points!

Briarcrest Christian in the same classification as Maryville! I don't think the enrollments are the same. BCS has about 120 kids or so per grade...my brother goes there so he would probably know. I would say that Maryville has more than 480 kids in the high school.

You also have ECS playing in the highest classification, yet they have less people then Briarcrest, which I also don't understand. They probably have about 10 less per grade, but that still wouldn't have them in the highest region

Montgomery Bell is in the same classification as St. Benedict? I don't understand that...MBA has all boys SBA is coed...did I miss something here...I hope I am completely wrong, but this goes by just pure numbers then it is completely wrong.

CBHS has about 900 boys...the TSSAA website has them at like 1400 but I think they are figuring in the girls from St Agnes, IC and a few other sister schools, which obviously has no factor on the Brothers...do we multiply their population by 2 to get their actual enrollment?

As I stated earlier I like the plan, but the numbers are off so I can't really comment on that part of it.

I don't like the way this plan shapes up for my YellowJackets. There are very few 3A teams in ET under this plan. Here's what RCHS schedule might look like:

3A games:

Loudon

Scott

Austin East

2 of McMinn Cent, Sequoyah, or Meigs Co.

Non-3A

Harriman

Rockwood

Lenoir City

Oliver Springs

1 from Wartburg, Tyner, or Sweetwater

That's the thing about any multiplier or similar set-up, you're going to have teams pushed up too high. I wouldn't want to see any of the 1A private school teams forced to be in a division with a McCallie...it's an old point but with a total split there would be enough teams for three divisions or at least two in Division II, less travel for the most part in the regular season and no complaining from public schools.

ELA,

I love the classes. 6 is one to many, but I think it is the most realistic. the mult numbers are good for non-aid privates.!!!!

Best plan yet!! I would tweek it as follows:

DII schools will not go back to limits. Put a 3.0 mult on them and let maryville and Riverdale beat them every year.

For me to be happy everything has got to be settled on the field. You'd have to put in regions in each class. Even if you have three teams from this region two from this one, or maybe the 1st place teams get a bye. either way, it should be settled on the field. I have to admit, I didn't read the Common plan thread, b/c math and people were involved, so I may have missed some good posts. But, I still say it has to be settled on the field.

I love the seeding idea though!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you had reagions and then let a committee seed based on mandatory qualifiers, I'd let that go. in other words, 1st and 2nd place teams go and then are seeded by TSSAA.

Overall, I'd vote yes on that one. it keeps everyone together and that is the main thing.
