Coniglio
Minutes: 13. Voted to table request of District 8-AAA for change in the Coach?€™s Box from 6 feet to 14 feet in basketball until August. http://tn.milesplit.us/articles/18630 Edit: Didn't read article and should have. Already covered. I would like to see it passed but we'll wait until August.
kyhoopsfan
I would love to see this changed. Six feet is a joke to try and coach from, and referees are often times too concerned about watching the box rather than something much more relative to the game itself. Most coaches are simply coaching when they are out of the box, not yelling at the officials, which should not be a problem. A final point would be that most coaches will not yell at officials who will talk with them. Too many officials simply won't communicate with coaches which only makes the coaches more irritated and likely to yell at officials to get their points across. Just a thought. BigPoppa
The extended box will be a plus, I hope it passes as well. Two things though; 1) Coaches will have a difficult time staying in the box no matter how big it is 2) There will always be referees who are overly concerned if a coach gets one step out of the box. 3) It's gonna be hard to enforce this year if it passes as most schools will not have made the adjustments to their home court. Remember the good old days when the coach had to remain seated on the bench at all times?

Remember the good old days when the coach had to remain seated on the bench at all times? There was a west Tennessee girls coach who solved the "remain seated" problem. He coached in a chair with wheels on it. You should have seen him rolling up and down the sidelines! Hilarious.

CoachF
If the coach is actually coaching his team both on the floor and on the bench, then there is not a good reason for the box not to be expanded. To steal a phrase from George Plaster, "lets be honest," if an official is going to T up a coach for being out of the box it doesn't matter if it is 6' or 60'. It is going to happen. I can tell you from experience referees would like to see the larger box. I have officiated for many years, and have always felt if the coaches are coaching then it doesn't matter where they stand. After all it is called a coaches box not a refereeing box. To address the comment about officials worry too much about the box, well let me say we have to enforce the rules no matter how silly they are or we will suffer the conseqences. If we ignore the coaches box can we ignore traveling? Yes we do have consequences, I was working a blowout game some folks from the state office was there to watch as I had been nominated for a state tourney that year., the coach of the team being blown out was having what i would term friendly banter with me after the game was questioned why I didn't "T" him up for being out of the box. I still got to work the state that year but If you think about it that is a RULE.

I still got to work the state that year but If you think about it that is a RULE. I didn't mean to imply that referees should not enforce the rule. My point was that when the box is only six feet wide, if a coach takes two steps he or she is out of the box, and now the referee has something else to deal with. Basketball may very well be the hardest sport to officiate (I was a certified referee in basketball and an umpire as well once upon a time) and widening the box may make the job a little bit easier.
