Quick thoughts on the Jamboree last night at Bearden

1st Quarter: CAK vs. Powell

Pretty much CAK dominated Powell. CAK is better than they were last year and have more speed. Their offense was clicking with a big strong TB and accurate QB while their defense was tough. Both of CAKs lines easily controlled the line of scrimmage. Powell made a few plays on offense but were too inconsistent. Their QB is an athlete but made some bad throws. I thought CAK looked very prepared and ready while Powell seemed the opposite.

2nd: Karns vs. Webb

This game was not played well by either team. Karns runs a dink & dunk passing attack that never stretches the field. When they do run, they were ineffective. Webb on the other hand seemed completely out of sorts on offense. Usually their offense is able to execute with precision early in the season. They have two small RBs who they continued to try and run. One was a soph. and the other a freshamn. Neither looked strong enough to carry the load although they were pretty quick. Webb's QB had zero time to pass as Karns line dominated Webb's repeatedly. I thought Webb's defense looked pretty good. their LBs were not very big but were quick to the football and they have two athletic looking safeties who run well.

3rd: West vs. Austin-East

I thought AE pretty much dominated this game although they didn't score. AEs defensive line pressured West's QB the entire time. West seemed a step slow while on the field with AE's athletes. AE has a nice back who gets to the edge very quickly and their LBs are fast and explosive. Right now, AE's defense is ready to play. West has work to do in their lines and need to find a RB.

4th: Farragut vs. South-Doyle

Nothing much to say about this one except Farragut took SD to the woodshed with their 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th teams. They kept coming like waves on offense and defense and just overwhelmed SD. Farragut's QB threw the best looking ball of any qB last night. Farragut's RB is a load and fast for his size.

5th: Catholic vs. Bearden

Don't let 3A vs 5A predict the outcome of this game. Catholic was very impressive. They have a ton of speed in the skill positions and are tough. They sat one of their starting RBs and still ran the ball at will against Bearden. Catholic's young lines were winning the battles up front. Catholics QB is big, strong, accurate and ran their offense efficiently. Early in the quarter he threw a perfect strike to the WR who completely torched a Bearden safety on a post route who dropped a sure TD. Bearden seems to have a couple of playmakers on both sides of the ball. They have a small RB who is very quick and cuts well.

Concerning the West AE game. I think you are a little off. The second series after West stopped AE on fourth down, West moved the ball to about the same spot as AE did. Also they have a nice stable of backs. Baylosis didn't get much of an opportunity to run the ball although he started, Williams had two carries for 20 yards, and Simmons and 1 carry for 10 yards. I though West did a good job of stopping AE's fast offense even though they allowed the back to get to the outside a couple of times.

    • Congratulations to the Warrior baseball team winning the Region Championship.  Last night the football team beat Franklin Co 33-0 in their spring scrimmage. Warriors looked very good. Missing a few players who were playing baseball but still absolutely dominated. A lot of young ones got in halfway through the 3rd when the score reached 33-0. QB Tilton Pickett looked very sharp.  Sam Pickett is on another level this season. Seems to have put on 15 to 20 lbs in the off season and added a step as well. Transfer from last year Williamson caught numerous balls and is very elusive. Lots of athletes on this team. Defense was smothering and will only get better. The head coach from Sewanee was in attendance and offered 2 kids after the game. Could be a special year.
