Doctored Bats!

I am a little curious about doctored bats in High School play and how prevalent it is. I found a recent article on the web:

Doctored Bats I saw some unusual balls hit in a game that made me a little weary of the bat being used. The bat was well liked by the team as 6 or 7 of the starting lineup used the same bat. Is it happening out there?

How are they doctoring a bat? Does that make the bat illegal? What are ways to tell if a team is using a doctored bat or can you even tell by looking at it?

Of course it makes the bat illeagal. Most of the time the end cap is taken out and the inner walls are shaven down, making the walls thinner and more lively. If done right, you can't tell that it has been shaven. This makes the balls come off at a faster rate, thus cutting down on reaction time of the defense, making it easier to get a hit and hit homeruns. Only thing is if a pitcher gets killed by the ball coming off that bat, whoever did it will be held accountable for it....................and it will happen sooner or later.

I found some websites that advertise more pop and up to 60 feet on distance. Their webpage advertises for home run derbys and such, and asked that you sign a form stating the bat will not be used for any type of league play (HA!).

well, that takes all the liability for the shaver and puts it on the player and more than likely parents.

If this is happening then this really worries me. If you can't hit a ball without doctoring your bat then you need to quit. I agree that if someone gets hurt or God forbid killed due to one of these bats then they should be prosecuted to the fullest. What is wrong w/ people, just work on making yourself better....not only will that be the right thing to do it will also make the player proud of his accomplishments. This will help make them a responsible adult. If a parent lets a kid use one of these bats then that shows a total lack of judgement on their part and will only rub off on their kid.

This play is illegal, although most people don't know. A good coach might and you will see down the road of what to come with there play. The shaved of the bat can make a ball shine farther or make a grounder harder.

Hope more coaches see this. /wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

I differ in the opinion that it takes liability away from shaver. When you change something it is your responsibility not the user just like swim at your own risk signs at hotels. they are still responsible for injuries.

    • Congratulations to Huntingdon and Station Camp. Lots of good softball in Tennessee. Alcoa been media favorite last two seasons.
    • Im more of a Basketball follower than football and like I said we play what we have, there is no going and recruiting or even talking kids into transferring…..and to rebut about Memphis teams in finals I’ve watched Memphis East and Penny Hardaway with the enrollment of a single A team play up and dominate any and all challengers for years! They aren’t the only ones either Mike Miller and son at Germantown put together that super team a couple years ago that ran through the rest of the state! Other teams from Memphis or Chatt or Nash or any large populated area pop up and are relevant out of nowhere every year because they get an influx of talent be it from a new coach or AAU affiliations it happens in football also just like any other sport! I hope these two schools that close join together and get to play the team you support, then you may see it differently! I find it funny some of you think recruiting and resources don’t matter . The county schools get very little funding also but you don’t want to get me started on that part!
    • In a total classless move, Coach Simmons once again shows his true colors. Waits till the day after school is out to let everyone know he is leaving. Fails up to a community college job after a lackluster 2 year span at GH. And do not tell me about the state run that saved a sub .500 season and plenty of whippings by Cookeville and Lebanon.  Looks like the girls job at GH is cursed. Terrible MS program/coaches feeding what is turning out to be a joke of a HS team.
