SHOWDOWN THURSDAY

As a parent and fan, I've done my share of complaining about calls...its part of the sport. The good refs ignore it, the poor ones engage the players or fans and show they aren't really focused on the game. A ref should be invisible and not try to be the star of the show. Weathermen and Refs...they get paid regardless of their accuracy!!!

Regarding the comment about the District Player of the Year being denied that title because of his constant whining about calls? I agree with this approach. Yes, it may be a character flaw, but so is "diving", overly criticizing teammates instead of leading them on the field, disrespect to your coach, complaining about being subbed out, being (in your own mind) you are infallible and anything bad (including calls) is someone else's fault....all these character attributes add up to make the whole player.

Prima Donnas should be awarded the Prima Donna title, otherwise, the players with the best talent, best work ethic, best leadership skills on the field + the least amount of character flaws affecting their and their teams' game are the top players in my book.

Farragut 3 - 1 Bearden

Farragut was definitely the better team tonight. Both teams played hard, but Farragut was able to possess more. In the first half Farragut did whatever they wanted to with Bearden. All 3 of Farragut's goals were scored in the 1st half. 1st goal came off a header by #4 on a corner kick. 2nd goal was a rip from about 30 yards out that knicked the post and in to the goal. And the 3rd goal came from a huge cross to an outside mid at the far post who first-timed it back in to the middle to #8 who placed it nicely in the corner.

Farragut did very well at switching the field and using the flanks to keep Bearden's defense off balance. 2nd half was a little more even, but Farragut was playing with a lot of their 2nd team guys. This is when Bearden got their goal. And the starters were immediately put back in to finish out the game.

Fun game to watch, but Farragut definitely showed they were the better team and the best team in this district. Good luck finishing out the season.

thank you tnfutbolfan.

Farragut applied immediate pressure from second one; 3 ???for-sure??? goals within first 5 mins, BUT Bulldogs somehow managed to scrap and clear balls. Farragut did not stop pushing play at all, it??™s amazing how high their intensity was. Couple scary moments in game; first at 26 mins when heads collided and Harmony stayed down for several mins. Corner at 25 mins Jester beautiful header ??“ surprised no yellow given for excessive celebration (back flip on side line for the fans after score). Trevor bullet from 25 yrds out slid just inside post 2-0. 2nd scary moment when Shea and Sisco collided, Sisco down less than a min regaining some composure, but was up with help looking a bit groggy. Farragut makes it 3-0 in the best developed scoring play I've seen them put together starting with Grieco long cross across the box, settled ball and back to back passes to Nick P. for a nice one touch back of net awesome play. Ball moved so quickly I couldn??™t keep up with touches. 3-0 at half.

Unofficial stat for Farragut: 18 shots with 9 on frame. If someone has accurate info, feel free to correct.

Bearden keeper change.

2nd half play slowed down a bit and intensity dropped a peg or two, but Farragut continued to pressure none-the-less. Refs really let them play, plenty of BIG hits and no calls ??“ shoulder to shoulder hits on 50-50 balls. Bearden definitely turned it around in the 2nd attacking a lot more pushing the play to Farragut. They finally broke through at the 15-16 min mark with a Wilkerson cross across goal box to a sliding Harmony(WBIR showed this goal on broadcast) past a diving Shea, 3-1. Not much happened until one-on-one breakaway chance at the 2:30 mark, huge clutch save for Shea.

Wayman stepped up big, pretty much shutting down Ryan C., Goose played his usual high level defense and Kendrick won his share of 50-50 balls. Defense did a good job breaking up Bearden attacks.

First half is the best half of soccer I have seen Farragut put together. Second half seemed more like a typical Bearden/Farragut game with both sides attacking. Expect two teams to play again for Districts and likely for Regions. Will be interesting to see what adjustments are made.

Comment on the Bearden and Farragut game:

Chapel and Compton are by far my two favorite referess; therefore, I am only comfortable admonishing them because I think they are the best, but I thought the Bearden and Farragut game was a little chippy last night. In my opinion, not one, but TWO PK's were missed last night. Early in the first half, Ryan Campbell abused his defender, and he was blatantly tripped in the box--not only was a PK not called, but there was not even a foul called. Furthermore, in the second half, a Farragut player was on a breakaway, and a Bearden player clearly and egregiously made no attempt on a ball and hacked the Farragut player in the box--it was almost like he was LOOKING for a card.

I am a huge fan of a ref who lets the game flow and lets players play, but I thought that if Ryan Campbell's PK was called in the first half that it might have helped Bearden come alive. Although who is to say that Culbreth wouldn't have kept his studs in for the entire game if Campbell gets his PK? Overall, I think both of the twins (Chapel and Compton) do an OUTSTANDING job at becoming invisible and letting the game be played out--there are numerous referees in this area who call it WAY too tight--but I thought there was a lot missed last night.

Growing concern/pet peeve of mine--When refs refuse or are scared to call a PK.
