Open zone schools: A level playing field?

Names aren't needed or wanted-at all-but for those familiar with the team, how many starters counting kicker and punter were players from outside Alcoa, whatever area would be their "zone"?

Last year it was 37%. It could be more or less in 2010. A couple of kids that were OOZ players last year are rumored to be moving back to their previous school. Alcoa has a high percentage of younger (7th and 8th graders) that are OOZ players that are attending school for athletic and academic purposes. Until the county schools upgrade football and academics Alcoa is going to remain an attractive alternative to the county schools in addition to some Knox and Loudon County kids.

Is that 37% of their starters or 37% total?

Either way, that sounds like a nice advantage to me.

That should definitely be grounds for moving up a class or two, even if it's just playoff class.

I've mentioned it before and will try to give the short version, for open zone schools analyze the nearby population in the high school age group and determine what would be a zone (for their current classification) if there is none. If it's found more than a predetermined number come from outside that zone, move the school up accordingly. There are experts in such fields that could figure it out.

Or they could just pull a number out of the air with no reasoning whatsoever......oh, say 1.8 ????

Does being able to get tuition students help Maryville? You bet it does. But! There are a few more advantages Alcoa and Maryville have over their competition. They pay their teachers and coaches very well. Maryville's biggest advantage right now is their coaching staff. Maryville went 20 years between state titles from 1978-1998. There were several 5-5 seasons in that timespan.Maryville had tuition students then but it didn't matter. Maryville struggled until the day George Quarles showed up at Maryville. GQ showed up in 1995. It took a few years but since 1997 Maryville is 178-24.

Not 100% sure but it was my understanding that Maryville had 5 OZZ kids on the roster last year starting with the freshman class. Most of these kids have been in the Maryville system for years. Maryville is full and virtually zero new tuition students are being accepted. Alcoa is still accepting tuition students thus the mass exodus from surrounding schools. Plus....annual tuition at Alcoa is around $500. Maryville's is $2,200 annually. Maryville, in the past, has enjoyed significant participation in athletics from OZZ kids but never to the extent that Alcoa has now. Was it an advantage...yes! Kids/families that want their kids at Maryville have to move into the city at this time and I don't expect that to change until they expand the school. It doesn't look like that is happening anytime soon.

Hate to burst your bubble BC but 37% was correct. As for starters that were OOZ players last year there were 4 on offense and 5 on defense. Alcoa is not breaking rules so I have no idea why the TRUTH bothers you so much.
